WGC celebrates "Late Night" Homecoming
First Homecoming
King crowned during
halftime celebration

West Georgia College’s 1991
Homecoming officially ended last
Saturday night with the crowning of
Valerie Cobb and Philip Thomas as
the Homecoming Queen and King.
The week’s activities included
the making of instant video buttons
on Tuesday, the Homecoming Pag
eant on Wednesday, a banner contest
on Thursday, a pep rally for the
football team on Friday and finally
the parade, football game and
crowning of the king and queen on
Saturday.
The Homecoming Court was se
lected during the Homecoming Pag
eant held last Wednesday night. The
female finalists were Valerie Cobb,
Student Georgia Association of
Educators; Jill Cross, Phi Mu;
Cathy Delaney, Alpha Gamma Delta;
Bridget Hardaway, United Voices
Choir and Lalani Lynch, Student
Government Association. The male
finalists were Robert Johnson, Black
Student Alliance; Mike Mason, Al
pha Gamma Delta; Jeff May, Chi
Phi; Wesley Simons, Kappa Sigma;
Philip Thomas, Tau Kappa Epsilon

and Chi Omega.
The selection of Homecoming
King and Queen was made at halftime
during the football game. Cobb was
chosen as Homecoming Queen, and
Thomas was chosen Homecoming
King. First runner-ups were Mason
and Delaney.
There was also competition for
the best float and banner. Alpha
Gamma Delta and Chi Phi received
first place honors for the best float,
and Phi Mu won the banner contest.
The climax for the week was West
Georgia’s defeat of the University of
North Alabama 28-26.
Chris Geiger of Student Activities
noted that he thought the week was a
success.
“It went well. The Homecoming
Committee worked very hard. Yet,
the most important aspect is how
much students enjoyed it,” Geiger
said. *

Student fatality results from head
on collision with drunk driver

A West Georgia College student
died Tuesday, November 5, in a DUl
related accident.
Michael C. Satterfield, 22, a junior
from Marietta, was killed when his
Honda Accord was hit by a 1974
Chevrolet pickup driven by Micky
Van Robinson, 34, of 8097 Salem
Church Road in Carrollton, accord
ing to the Georgia State Patrol report.
The accident occurred on
Wednesday, November 13,1991

proximately 3:20 p.m. Robinson
crossed into Satterfield’s lane caus
ing a head-on collision.
Robinson was charged with DUI,
vehicular homicide of the first de
gree, driving on the wrong side of
the road, driving with no insurance,
and driving with an open container
of alcohol.
Tanner Medical Center listed
Robinson in satisfactory condition
last Thursday with head injuries.
Satterfield was buried Friday in
Fannin County, and Sigma Nu Fra
ternity, of which Satterfield was a
member, held a memorial service
Monday night.
The fraternity placed a marker at
the base of the flagpole at the frater
nity house and performed the
fraternity’s closing ritual.
“We as a chapter wanted to do
this in Mike’s memory,” said Ben
Bell, Sigma Nu president.
Satterfield was the son of Robert
and Theresa Satterfield and is also
survived by a brother, Duane, who
attends WGC.
