We are perfectly capable of
governing our own actions, just
as you are. Asa future educator, I
wonder how wise it is to teach
about freedom, while passing
legislation to curtail the freedom
of your pupils. As an employee of
the Student Development Center,
I appreciate the fact that much of
the college experience occurs
outside of the classroom. The
unrestricted exchange of ideas and
opinions is vital to a well rounded
individual. Asa parent, I
understand the need for order on
this campus; but ladies and
gentlemen no matter how much
pressure is applied by outside
forces, I contend that the student
body of West Georgia College is
not composed of children who
need their every move planned out
for them, but by some of the best
and brightest individuals of all
ages who are quite capable of
maintaining order among
themselves.
As for protecting college
property, many students live on
campus and those of us who
commute appreciate this facility,
and I don't believe that this is a
very viable concern. Finally, the

those who wish to exercise their
rights of free expression. This is
counter productive to the learning
process of higher education. This
is not a secure world and placing
students in a safe haven for them
to express their views, disrupts
feedback which is vital in order for
a person to modify his position.
This policy was ratified by the
Faculty Senate by a 16 to 6 vote

for one appreciate the 6 faculty
members who had the nerve to
avoid campus politics and vote for
the rights guaranteed students by
the U.S. Constitution.

Lighting committee needs responses
Dear Editor
Due to student response to
the Student Government
Association’s (SGA) Lighting
Committee’s survey, it seems
only appropriate to say thanks
to all the concerned students of
West Georgia College. Before
conducting the survey, the
Lighting Committee had
listened to the students’
complaints about poor lighting
on campus.
Now that the survey has
run for two weeks and a third
with this issue, the only
conclusion that can be reached
is that there is apparently no
lighting problem here at WGC.
Panhellenic Rush changes will be beneficial
Dear Editor
I would like to give a big pat
on the back to the Panhellenic
Council for making necessary and
long awaited changes for Sorority
Rush next year. The rushing
process has become a monotonous
and expensive ordeal with many
rushees and sororities becoming
frustrated as a result. I realize

The West Georgian-Wednesday, November 13,1991-
How was this conclusion
reached? That is quite easy to
explain. Out of thousands of
WGC students and
approximately two thousand
residence hall students, not one
individual returned the survey
printed in the West Georgian.
So thanks to the student
body of WGC, it seems a safe
conclusion to channel our
energies in a direction that may
prove more beneficial to WGC
rather than a non-existent
lighting problem. Now that
we are aware, hopefully we
will now be able to stop
wasting time on matters about
which the students are not
many people are resistant to
changes, but these should be made
with the attitude of benefitting the
rushee rather than what is best for
the sorority.
Also, the idea of creating an
Alumnae Panhellenic to support
our own Panhellenic is an
excellent one. I feel that
Panhellenic needs this support and
Handgun laws a waste of time
Dear Editor
A recent article on gun control
was written by Melissa Guske.
She comments on the easy access
to handguns and the shocking
rampage in Killeen, Texas. Ms.
Guske suggests that restrictions
on the accessibility of handguns
could solve the problem.
On the contrary, restrictions
on handguns would lead to a
stronger illegal market for
Student Government
Association Survey
The SGA’s lighting committee needs
student help. We need for you to list
areas around campus that you believe
have insufficient lighting so we can look
into this concern. If you could take
time to do this survey and return it to a
SGA suggestion box in either the
library or the student center, it would
be appreciated.

concerned.
So thank you for your
tireless efforts and time.
However, if you do not
something as a concerned
student that you can do. This
is the last issue in which the
survey will be run through the
West Georgian. If you feel
that lighting is a problem on
campus, fill out the survey and
return it. It is only by
working together that we can
plan for a better future.

handguns. Psychopaths would
still attain a handgun for a
reasonable price. The restrictions
would only create anew crime
(illegal gun dealing).
Until we can restrict handguns
without creating another crime,
the law and time are wasted. With
no clear alternative, the human
race must live with the destruction
device it has created.
