Led by Louis Lomax’s 126 yards
rushing and Chris Teal’s 248 yards
passing and four touchdowns, West
Georgia won its second Gulf South
Conference game of the season and
moved to 5-5 overall for the year.
Despite temperatures in the 30s,
3,500 fans watched the Braves
overcome a late fourth quarter charge
by North Alabama to escape with a
28-26 victory.
With only 6:43 remaining in the
game, North Alabama quarterback
Stacey Stewart capped a 16 play
drive with a three-yard touchdown
pass to Eric Groom. A two-point
conversion made the score 28-18
with 2:10 left in the game.
An on-side kick was recovered
by UNA’s George Williams, and the
Lions scored on another Stewart pass,
this one to Troy Nelson. A second
two-point conversion pulled the Li
ons to within two before West
Georgia’s Leo Mendenhall sealed
the game by recovering the next on
side kick.
“I guess we just wanted to find a
way to keep the game interesting,”
said Coach Ron Jumey, in reference
to the late comeback by North Ala
bama.

ing with a 44-yard touchdown pass

drives in the opening quarter end
with turnovers in Lion territory.
UNA safety Michael Jackson picked
off a Chris Teal pass at the Lion 27
yard line and Mark Evans fumbled at
the UNA 43 yard line, after picking
up what would have been a first
down.
The Braves got on the board with
a Teal touchdown pass to Evans early
in the second quarter. An Adam

West Georgia increased its lead
to 28-10 with a touchdown reception
by Kevin Fleeman with three minutes
in the third quarter. The Braves then
began to try to run down the clock in
the fourth quarter with one drive
taking almost seven minutes from
the clock before WGC gave the ball
back to the Lions.
Down by 18 with only 6:43 re
maining, the Lions seemed to also
try to run the clock down by taking
over four minutes to score their first
touchdown of the fourth quarter. The
Lions eventually found themselves
down by two points with under a
minute to play and needing to recover
an on-side kick and drive for a field
goal. They were unable to get the
ball back, and Chris Teal went to his
knee twice to run the game out.
“We had a tremendous effort by
our players and coaches,” said
Jumey. “Our coaches did a good job
preparing our players and making
the necessary adjustments and the
players did a good job of executing
those adjustments.”
This game was the last home game
for 13 players including Lomax and
Mendenhall. Defensively, the Braves
will lose Chris Edwards, Jermel
Dortch, Troy Kirkland, and Chris
Opolka. From the offensive side, the
Braves lose Lomax, Mendenhall,
Shane Brown, Blake Collins,
Michael Payne, Doug Pridmore,
Todd Shelnutt, Jeff Shiflett, and
Werner Schrotter.
A victory over Lane College next
week will give West Georgia its first
winning season since 1982, the year
the Braves won the NCAA Division
111 National Championship. The
Braves move to 5-5 overall and 2-4
in the GSC. UNA falls to 3-5 and
1-4.
