Graduate student disapproves of expression policy
Dear Editor:
I am writing this editorial in re
sponse to the adoption of the new
freedom of expression policy ap
proved 11/8/91 by the Faculty Sen
ate. The new policy will restrict the
times, days, the duration and location
of marches, speeches, demonstra
tions, and the distribution of litera
ture.
I attended the meeting held on
Friday, November 8 in the Geogra
phy Building. After a brief discus
sion between students, faculty, and
college administrators, the vote was
held. As I sat there listening to the
Faculty Senate members vote yes to
WGC Braves praised for good season
Dear Editor:
Congratulations, Braves...that’s
the West Georgia College Braves.
Saturday’s 56-8 blowout of the
Lane College Dragons capped our
first winning season (6-5) since
the glorious Division 111 National
Championship season in 1982. A
long, long time in coming, but,
hey, it’s here, so let’s relish every
bit of it.
Sandwiched in between two
huge season opening and closing
victories, our Braves won four and

restricting our rights to choose when,
where and how we can express our
First Amendment rights, I felt be
trayed. In a nation that prides itself
on freedom of speech and the right to
peaceful assembly, here was a state
operated institution prescribing how
we should execute these rights.
Several points should be made
here. First is that there were only
five students present to contest this
action. Ironically, the student per
haps in the best position to speak on
behalf of our student body, SGA
president Ben Evansky, remained
silent throughout the entire proceed
ing. One has to question where his
lost five. Among those losses was
a disappointing 13-10 setback to
1-AA foe Troy State, but most
heartbreaking was the one-point
loss to rival Valdosta State. I will
never forget the emptiness felt as
the Blazers rallied late to win 38-
37.
A few missed tackles and
dropped passes unfortunately kept
us from having an exceptional
season. My point is that we (fac
ulty, staff, students and fans) have
a lot to be proud of. With a win
ning season under our belts, and
the silver lining being “what could
loyalties lie. It is no small wonder
that our congressional representa
tives are often surrounded by scan
dals, and our nation has acquired a
S3 trillion debt. When elected offi
cials and administrators are not held
accountable for their actions or lack
of action then abuses to our system
will be inherent.
The second point I should make
deals with the necessity of the
changes in the policy to begin with.
According to Dr. Bruce W. Lyon,
dean of student services at WGC, in
the past fifteen years in which the old
policy had been in effect, WGC had
have been,” gives me hope for the
future of our football program. I
believe this is the beginning of a
new era in West Georgia football,
where winning will once again
become a tradition, and pride for
our school will return.
But, let’s not leave it here. I’m
very excited about the prospects
for more Gulf South Conference
titles coming to West Georgia from
our other sports, too. GO BRAVES!
Sincerely,

The West Georgian-Wednesday, November 20,1991'
not experienced any problems. Dr.
Lyon made this comment on 11/8/91
during the discussion over the pro
posed changes to the freedom of
expression policy. Given that at no
time in recent memory were there
any problems arising from the
abandoned policy, why then was
there a need to impose more restric
tive statutes?
Finally and perhaps more im
portantly is the question of legality.
Does the Board of Regents/WGC
have the authority to impose limita
tions on our First Amendment rights?
If the answer is yes, then this will set
a dangerous precedent for future dis-
School should consider
other parking options
Dear Editor:
I have been at West Georgia
College for two quarters, and I
have found a problem with the
parking. Actually, the problem is
the lack of parking spaces avail
able to students. I think that many
available parking spaces are
wasted in faculty parking lots.
There are ways to put these wasted
spaces to good use and create more
spaces for student parking.
Unless students arrive on
campus before 7:30 a.m., it is
difficult to find a parking space.
Many students have classes that
start at either 9:00 a.m. or 10:00
a.m., so it is senseless for these
students to arrive on campus at
7:30 a.m. just to get a parking
space. When searching or waiting
for an empty parking space, stu
dents are usually late for class.
Student Government
Association Survey
The SGA’s lighting committee needs
student help. We need for you to list
areas around campus that you believe
have insufficient lighting so we can look
into this concern. If you could take
time to do this survey and return it to a
SGA suggestion box in either the
library or the student center, it would
be appreciated.

Many times students have to park,
and they get a parking ticket.
Faculty parking lots usually
have empty spaces in them. Al
most every time one sees an empty
parking space, it is for a faculty
member. These spaces are being
wasted on the faculty when they
are needed by the students.
This problem could be solved
by making the faculty parking
lots smaller and the student
parking lots larger. This would
take only the spaces that the fac
ulty does not need. The extra
spaces would help the students
get to class on time and keep them
from getting fines. These spaces
would be appreciated by the
searching students.
