Fee payment changed for next quarter

There will be no arena fee pay
ment at the beginning of Spring
Quarter due to changes in fee pay
ment procedures, according to Dr.
W.H. Smith, assistant dean of stu
dents.
The early payment procedures
will take effect during the early
registration for spring quarter. Early
registration fees and charges must
be paid before the end of winter
quarter, said Smith at last Monday’s
Student Government Association
(SGA) meeting.
The purpose of the new procedure
is to save wasted class openings.
Each quarter 1,500 seals are tied up
through early registration and aren’t
available until the end of drop/add.
With the new system a seat is guar
anteed when the student pays. If the
student does not early pay during
early registration, then their class
schedule will be canceled according
to Smith. This student will then have
to go through arena registration.
“When you early register, you
will early pay,” said Smith.
Approximately 3,000 students
receive some form of financial aid
and they must also meet the new
deadlines. These students only have
to pay what is not covered by their
awards. Financial aid recipients who
have" jnds coming back to them will
receive their checks after the first
week of classes if they pay early.
Students who receive financial aid
and go through arena registration
will not recieve their refund checks
until after the second week of classes.
A test group of 490 students
tested the program this quarter. Only
four students had a problem with the
new system said Sue Meyers, Direc
tor of Financial Aid.
“There are so many advantages
to students as a whole. The biggest
advantage is classes not being tied
up,” said Meyers.
One of the advantages according
to Smith is that students who were
forced to go through arena fee pay
ment to endorse financial aid checks
will now have these checks taken
care of electronically. Smith added
however, that those students receiv
ing Stafford loans will still have to
attend arena fee payment.
Smith also addressed the problem
of students who work between
quarters to earn money for school.
“Short term loans will be available
for these students and they should
remember that they can also use their
own or their parents’ credit card if
one is available,” Smith explained.
Students who do not register and
pay during early registration may
register during arena registration at
the beginning of the quarter.
Ben Evansky, President of SGA
said, “I personally feel there needs to
be a lot more input from students
because I’ve talked to many and they
are very unhappy.”
Smith responded by saying the
students should give it a chance and
the administration expects the
transititon to be rough, but it will be
watched very closely.

and charged with burglary.
According to Harris, the five
males entered the building with a set
of keys with the intent to steal a math
test. The students did not find the
test, but did change a score in a grade
book according to Harris. Public
Safety has recovered the set of keys
used in the incident. Harris stated
that he was actively pursuing the key
issue. He added that as of last
Thursday, November 21, no keys
had been reported missing recently.
Public Safety is still conducting
its investigation. The case will be
presented before the Carroll County
Grand Jury in January to ask for
indictments in the case.
According to the Associate Dean
of Student Services, Dr. W. H. Smith,
the students have had a student ju
diciary hearing and are still waiting
for the results. Smith added that
academic suspension is highly likely,
as is usual in cases of this nature.
