Lady Braves off to quick
start with 9-1 record

After opening the season with
six straight victories, the West
Georgia Lady Braves have vaulted
their record to 9-1 heading into the
1992 portion of their schedule.
The Lady Braves opened the
1991-92 season seeking their fifth
consecutive winning season under
Coach Jane Williamson. The club
took a step in that direction in the
season opener, posting a 62-57 win
against Augusta College on Novem
ber 27. The Lady Braves then
knocked off Tuskegee University
(77-60) and Clark-Atlanta (76-57)
to improve their record to 3-0.
The Lady Braves then traveled to
Milledgeville, where they took first

74-64 and then knocking off host
Georgia College 65-54 in the
championship game.
With their record at 5-0, the
Lady Braves journeyed down to
Honda to take on RoUins CoUege
on December 9th in Orlando. There
they roUed to their sixth victory in
as many tries with a 61-53 win.
Two days later the team trav
eled to Boca Raton, Ha to face
Horida Atlantic. Despite leading
most of the game, the Lady Braves
fell 64-60. The team then traveled
to St. Petersburg for a December
13 match-up with Eckerd CoUege
to finish up the the three-game
Sports
road swing. The Lady Braves closed
out the trip in fine fashion, crushing
Eckerd 79-60.
After a three week lay-off for
Christmas, the Lady Braves returned
home to take on Tuskegee Univer
sity (i January 4th. Theclub trounced
the Tigerettes 77-72 to run their
record to 8-1 on the season.
Having won eight of their first
nine, the Lady Braves traveled to
Valdosta State this past Monday to
open conference play against the
Lady Blazers. True to form once
again, the team took a7l -62 win and
relumed home 9-1 and 1-0 in the
Gulf South Conference. The Lady
Braves battle Jacksonville State on
Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the HPE
Building.
Thus far this season, the Lady
Braves have been led by sophomore
forward Schwanda Walker, who
leads the team in rebounds and steals
and is the second-leading scorer,
averaging 17 points per game (ppg).
AU-Conference standout Gina
Howers leads the team in scoring,
I averaging nearly 19 points per game.

Braves post 4-7 record
The West Georgia Braves
opened the 1991-92 season with a
host of new talent and high ex
pectations. However, with only
three lettermen, including one
starter returning, Coach David
Laton faced a real question mark.
In the season opener, the Braves
were defeated soundly by RoUins
CoUege 75-59 in the first round of
the Armstrong State Classic. The
Braves also dropped the consola
tion game of the tournament 95-80
to Lincoln Memorial.
The Braves then took their show
on the road to North Georgia Col
lege, where they squeaked out a
79-77 victory behind point guard
David Shelton’s 30 points.
In the Braves’ home opener cm
November 30th, the club defeated
ShorterCoUege79-66. The Braves
were led by 6’6" senior, Winston
Shepard, who had 19 points and 11
rebounds.
The Braves then dropped the
next three games before heading
into the West Georgia-Kiwanis
Classic. The Braves lost a heart
breaker to North Georgia CoUege
67-66, then feU 96-88 to Tuskegee
University and 90-74 to Albany
State. The losses dropped them to
2-5 on the season.
In the West Georgia-Kiwanis
Classic, the Braves won a shoot
out with Tennessee Temple, 108-
100, behind junior guard Lance
Reinhard’s 29 points and eight
rebounds. The Braves, however,
fell in the championship game to
Armstrong State 97-85 despite
junior forward Kendrick
Eskridge’s 26 points and eight
rebounds. The loss dropped the
Braves to 3-6 as they headed down
to Statesboro to take on a tough
Georgia Southern team. Once
again the Braves found themselves
in a shoot-out but feU to the Eagles
115-94.
The loss dropped the Braves to
3-7 as they headed down to
Valdosta on Monday to open
conference play against Valdosta
State. The Blazers were 7-3
coming into the game and looked
to be a team ready to contend for
theconference title, but the Braves
shocked the Blazers, leaving with
a 78-73 win. The win improved
the Braves record to 4-7 and 1-0
in conference play.
The Braves host Jacksonville
State this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
