Dating in college often forges lifelong
relationships; needs to be taken seriously
By Courtney Morris

“Most likely the person you marry
will be someone you date in college,”
said Dr. Ann Phillips, a counselor
with student affairs.
Phillips commented that dating
relationships in college are very
important because students are set
ting goals for themselves and are
making plans which may include
some type of long term relationship,
such as marriage.
Often, people who are not in a
dating relationship feel that some
thing is wrong with them. Therefore,
a non-dating person will, at times,
sacrifice and compromise too early
in a relationship in order to instill a
positive self image, according to
Phillips.
Phillips added that having a strong
self image is very important. A
person with a strong self image is

“Sometimes people don’t like
themselves, and it makes it hard to
have a relationship because the per
son is too sensitive,” Phillips said.
Phillips suggested that before
becoming involved in a dating rela
tionship, a person should build his
own self image by examining his
values, find out what is important in
his life, and be honest with himself.
Once he becomes involved in a re
lationship, he should keep building
his confidence. Continue his per
sonal self examination of important
values and ideology in his life. Con
tinue to be true to himself.
Phillips explains, “If you don’t
like broccoli, then don’t eat it.”
