West Georgia College students
had mixed believes on the heated
debate between the Vice Presiden
tial candidates which was held
Tuesday, Oct. 13 in Atlanta at the
Theater for the Arts on the campus of
Georgia Tech.
Democratic candidate A1 Gore,
Republican candidate Dan Quayle
and Independantcandidate Admiral
James Stockdale are the Vice Presi
dential candidates.
While Gore and Quayle bickered,
Stockdale added humor to the debate.
Stockdale began his opening
statement by saying, “Who am I?
Why am I here?’ ?
When Gore and Quayle were ar
guing about abortion, Stockdale said,
“I feel like I’m an observer at a ping
pong game.”
At another time when Gore and
Quayle were disputing, Stockdale
responded, “And! think American is
seeing right now the reason why this
nation is in gridlock.”

funny, like he didn’t have a purpose
except to put down the other candi
dates,” said Jamie Warren, a 19-
year-old sophomore.
A wide variety of questions were
asked from the audience: what role
would each of you like to play as vice
president, what interests you, and
what qualifications do you have to
serve as president if necessary.
Quayle said that first of all he had
been there, and secondly that you
have to stand up for what you believe
in and that no one had ever accused
him of not having strong beliefs.
Stockdale, missing the entire
question, stated that he was sure Ross
Perot would make him a partner in
making decisions and that he knew
Perot trusted him.
Gore said that he and Bill Clinton
would work together to help the
economy.
West Georgia College students
had mixed feeeling on the importance
of the vice president, some thought
he was worthless while others be
lieved he may be the future.
“I think the vice president is quite
important because if something
happens to the president, he has to
take over,” said mass communica
Rodney Carr of WGC Public Safety.
According to Capt. S wain Harris
of Public Safety, Chandra Celeste
Folds, 21, of Atlanta was arrested for
DUI, driving the wrong way on a
one-way street, reckless driving as
well as fleeing and attempting to
elude officers.
According to Carr, the arresting
officer, Folds was seen by officers
driving the wrong way on
Brumbelow Road.
tions major Victor Lewis a 22-year
old WGC senior.
There was a heated discussion on
abortion. “I happen to be pro-life. I
have been pro-life for my 16 years in
public life. My objective and the
president’s objective is to try to re
duce abortions in this country,”
Quayle said.
Stockdale’s point of view on
abortion was, “I believe that a woman
owns her body and what she does
with it is her business, period.” *
Gore said that he believes a
woman has a right to choose, but that
does not necessarily mean that he is
in favor of abortions.
Another question was how would
each candidate’s administration try
to give people jobs again.
Stockdale, stumbling over words,
said that we need to borrow less
money and start manufacturing our
own goods again.
Gore said that Clinton and he
would create good, high wage jobs,
but he did not say how.
Quayle, criticizing Clinton and
Gore, said that raising taxes would
only make matters worse.
During the discussion after this
question, Gore stated that Clinton
“At 3:28 a.m. I observed a black
Ford Escort accelerate on
Brumbelow Road headed the wrong
way. I attempted to stop the vehicle.
The vehicle then accelerated and
headed south on Brumbelow Road,”
Carr said.
Folds continued attempting to
elude Public Safety officers, ac

most of the students believed Gore
prevailed.

Folds was stopped at Brumbelow
Road and Back Campus Drive and
arrested for DUI a few moments
later, according to the report.
When contacted about the report,
Folds denied being arrested.
Laurel Ohlson a 22-year-old se
nior majoring interior design said,
“The debate encouraged me to vote
because Quayle was unprofessional
and Stockdale seemed lost. Gore
seemed to be the only one worthy of
office.”
Other students thought they were
simply acting like children with
their bickering at one another.
According to Capt. Mike Brad
ley of the Carrollton Police, Folds
was arrested by Public Safety and
taken to the Carrollton Police Station
on Oct. 9.
If convicted, Folds could face up
to 30 days in prison and $l,lBO in

to Sgt. Chris Marlar of Public Safety.
