Newspaper Page TextFlorida Atlantic outlasts Lady Braves in overtime By Dexter Williams Sports Writer The West Georgia College Lady Braves dropped an overtime thriller to visiting Florida Atlantic University Lady Owls, 94-88, in a non conference game last Friday night, Jan. 22. “Florida Atlantic is playing a Division I type schedule and this game had a big barring (Hi the national rankings for both teams next week,” Jane Williamson, WGC head coach said. “We knew, coming into this game, that Yolanda Griffith, their 6- 4 center, was averaging 30 points a game. Our ball handling was not that good and we must learn to play in overtime.” Griffith of Florida Atlantic totally controlled the entire ball game. She finished with a triple-double: 46 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Stefanie Jones and Dee Vicera had 14 and 10 points respectively. West Georgia had a more balanced attack with four players scoring in double figures. Leading the Lady Braves wereTeßeon Kelsey with 21 points and 11 rebounds,Kristi Coffee and Javorah Dallas with 20 points, and Schwanda Walker with 12 points. West Georgia loses two conference contests at Jacksonville St. By Richard Harris Sports Editor The West Georgia College basketball teams traveled to Jacksonville State Monday, where they dropped a pair of conference games to the rival Gamecocks. Kristi Coffee got West Georgia off to a good start by hitting a 3 pointer from deep in the comer. The Lady Owls came down and scored on a soft jumper by Griffith, who scored her team's first six points. The game went back and forth before Florida Atlantic went on a 6- 0 run to take a 17-11 lead with 13:42 left in the first half. The Lady Braves responded to tie the game at 17 with back to back 3-pointers by Javorah Dallas and Kristi Coffee. The Lady Owls took their first double digit lead after that on lay-up by Griffith to make the score 33-22 and West Georgia took a timeout with 6:40 left to regroup. After the timeout, the Braves got back in the game and reeled off 18 points to the Lady Owl’ 6 to take a 40-39 halftime lead. The scoring output was engineered by 3-pointers from Coffee and Iris Brown and inside scoring from Teßeon Kelsey. The Lady Owls came out of the locker room and scored first, giving them a 41-40 lead. That did not last The men’s team reversed its trend of poor firsthalf performances, played well and stayed with the rival Gamecocks through the period. They were trailing only 43-39 at the half. However, Jacksonville State made 67 percent of its shots in the second half and pulled away for a Sports long because Coffee answered with a three-pointer to give WGC a two point lead. Once again the teams played keep up with each other as they traded baskets. Finally, Florida Atlantic went on a 14-2 run to give them a 67-57 lead with 6:15 to play. West Georgia then got on track and got back in the game with a 13-3 run to tie the game at 70. The Lady Braves took a 74-70 lead after a steal and basket by Dallas with 1:06 to play, but West Georgia could not keep this lead because the Lady Owls came back to tie the game on a turn around jumper by Griffith with two seconds to go in the game that sent the game into overtime with the scored tied at 78. In the extra session, West Georgia seemed to take control and be in command, scoring 10 points, but as usual FAU came back to tie the game at 88 with 2:02 to play. The Lady Owls then made their free throws and assured themselves of a win with good defense. The loss dropped the Lady Braves record to 8-6 and 2-3 in the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Owls improved to 12-5 on the year. 109-87 conference win. The victory marked Coach Bill Jones' 400th career win and improved his team’s record to 12-5. Matt O’Brien paced the Braves with 24 points. Lance Reinhard scored 14 and Corey Brown was the team’s top rebounder with 8. January 27, 1993 WGC Lady Braves battle for a rebound in Monday's 94-88 loss at the hands of Florida Atlantic The Braves, who also lost a road game two nights earlier at Wofford, fell to 3-14 and l-5 with the loss. Their long road trip continues tonight, when they take on Alabama- Huntsville. The Lady Braves also played well and hung with Jacksonville State in flC'TftSl half. Taßeon Kelsey once again led the Lady Braves with 20 points, while Shunda Barkley and Schwanda Walker tossed in 13 and 12. The Lady Braves dropped to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the GSC.
