Lady Braves and Braves
defeat Livingston teams

The West Georgia College Lady
Braves and Braves have opened
conference the right way with
victories, defeating the visiting
Livingston Lady Tigers and Tigers
last Saturday night.
The Lady Braves won their first
conference game of the year and
second overall with an 85-61 victory.
Pacing the Lady Braves were
Kristi Coffee with 27 points, followed
by Amy Gibson and Sharon
Yarbrough, who also had a game
high 17, each with 16 and Samantha

The Lady Tigers were led by Kim
Dent with 15 points, Michelle Stewart
with 13, Melia Van Lair with 11 and
Cotina Harbin with 10.
“This was a conference game and
(we) really needed it,” said head coach
Shelia Collins.
The Lady Braves started off
quickly behind two free throws from
Gibson and then built the lead up to
16-4, before Livingston realized what
had happened to them.
WGC continued to add to the lead,
building a 16-point advantage, 31-15,
midway through the first half.

However, Livingston was able to
cut into the lead by going on an 11-5
run to cut the lead to 10,36-26 near the
half.
WGC countered with a 9-0 run to
build the lead back to 19, 45-26, at the
half.
The run was keyed by two 3-pointers
by Coffee.
The second half was much of the
same as Coffee hit anotherjumper early
to increase the lead to 21, 49-28. The
lead would not fall below 20 the rest of
the way as they Lady Braves built up as
much as a 36-point lead in the half.
Livingston did cut the lead to just
under 30 on a layup by Dent to make
the score 85-57 late in the game, but
could not mount the tremendous
comeback.
Coffee hit five baskets, including
four in the first half and scored 20 of
her points in the first stanza.
The Lady Braves now stand at 2-7,
1-1 in conference heading into a
rematch with Livingston Saturday, this
time at their place.
The Braves improved to 2-0 in
conference play as they manhandled
the Livingston Tigers 80-62.
Leading the scoring output for the
Braves were Shawn Hadley with a
game-high 32 points, followed by
Vernon Warner with 17 and Jevon
Banks with 16.
Livingston was lead by Debore
Watson with 15 points.
Both men’s teams started their game
trying to get a feel for the other as they
traded baskets before Livingston took

The West Georgia College
football team enjoyed their best
season since the 1982 national
championship season, and many of
the players received Gulf South all
conference honors for their
performances on the field during the
1994 campaign.
Receiving honors for the Braves
on the first team were: senior running
back Felix Addo, senior offensive
lineman Richard Fendley, junior
linebacker Tim McClain and red
shirt freshman defensive back Corey
Jarrells.
Junior quarterback Mark Eldred,
senior offensive lineman Josh
Lovelady and red-shirt sophomore
return specialist Thad Tucker all
shared second team honors.

a three point lead, 13-10, early.
Banks calmly hit a 3-pointer to tie
the score at 13 and on the Braves’ next
possession, James Clark, who is
starting in place of the inj ured Michkal
Locklear, hit another three and the
Braves would never trail again.
Nearing the close of the half, the
Braves only held a slim 29-27 lead
before they went on an 11-3 run to go
up 10, 40-30, at the break.
The lead quickly increased to 19

“It feels great being named to the
all-conlerence team, especially since
I am a senior, and our conference is
one of the toughest in Division II,”
said Lovelady.
The Braves, with seven players
on the all-conference team, were tied
for second with Valdosta State
University behind only North
Alabama, which had 12 players
honored.
“It is a great honor to be named to
the all-conference team, but personal
goals could not be attained without a
total team effort, and we had that all
season,” said Fendley.
“It is a great honor for those
players, as well as for our program,”
said assistant coach Bill Young.

Braves never looked back.
The Tigers eventually cut the lead
to six, but West Georgia answered
with a 14-3 run to increase the margin
to 17, the closest Livingston would
get the rest of the night.
The Braves now stand at 7-5
having to face Livingston again
Saturday night in their next game.
Editor’s Note: Results of the
Lady Braves game against
Jacksonville State last night were
not available at press time.
The Braves finished thifd in
the conference this season with a
7-3 overall record and 4-3 in the
conference, andexpect nothing less
than to finish at the top next season.
With the return of all
conference players like McClain,
Jarrells, Eldred and Tucker, the
Braves should finish at the top.
