Lady Braves have high hopes for new season
Chris P. Bailey
Assistant News Editor
After suffering through two
dismal seasons, the Lady Braves
basketball team is going into
this season with an optimistic
attitude.
“In our early season sched
ule, you may not see the im
provement in win-loss record
because of the people we play,
but we are a better basketball
team than this time last year,”
stated Head Coach Craig Roden.
While he is optimistic, the
Lady Braves have a lot of un
knowns ahead of them. Among
these concerns is the fact that,
of thirteen players, seven are
new to the team.

Spears, a 5-foot-6-inch guard,
are two transfers that will join
five freshman who are expected
to see action this year.
Mangruen is tranferring from
Wallace State Junior College
where she was named All-re
gion in 1997. Spears comes
from Wallace State, however,
she will be red-shirted this year.
Joining Spears as a red-shirt
will be freshman center,
Joshephine Jones, who will
bring size and strength to the
team.
Also expected to get limited
playing time will be a host of fresh
man led by Alexandra Harvey, a5-
foot-4-inch guard, and Brandi
Robertson, a 5-foot-6-inch guard
who is expected to contend for time
at the wing position due to her
superior outside shooting.

While this number of new
players would normally cause
worry, a strong nucleus of play
ers from last year’s squad led by
seniors Tonya Jackson and
Latonya Jonesare also returning
to the Lady Braves.
Jackson, a 5-foot-7-inch
guard, returns this year after
setting a school record last sea
son for most steals. Coaches
are hoping she will develop
more consistency in her shoot
ing game so that she may have a
chance at All-GSC Honors.
When talking about his guard,
Roden stated, “Tonya is the best
defensive player in the Gulf-
South Conference. In 14 con
ference games, she held the
opponent’s leading scorer be
low her average 13 of the 14
times.”
Playing point guard again this
year will be Jones, a5-foot-lse
nior from Chicago. Coach
Roden is planning on shaping
the team’s style after her speed.

The defense came up big when
necessary, picking off five Delta
State passes and returning one 51
yards for a touchdown.
Neither team scored in the first

goal in the final seconds to take a 3-
Olead.
West Georgia then scored the
only points of the third quarter when
quarterback Toby Strange threw a
28 yard touchdown pass to Roscoe
Pounds.
Delta State opened the fourth
quarter with a touchdown. West
Georgia soon countered when
Strange again hit Pounds for a touch
down pass, this (me a 74 yarder.
Three minutes later, Brent
Daniels punched the ball into the
end zone from one yard out to give
the Braves a 12 point lead.
Reggie Lewis scored the final
