First AFRO-CASA Week
Highlights Two Cultures

Monday, February 19,
marked the beginning of the
African-Caribbean Student
Association's week of events
during its First active year. On
Tuesday, February 20, at 7:30,
AFRO-CASA sponsored
“Caribbean Night” in the
University Community Center.
This cultural event was a pleas
ure for all of the senses. Feet
tapped at the rhythmic sound of
Calypso and Reggae, which set
the mood for Caribbean aw are
ness. Taste buds were tantalized
with samples of food from this
tropical area of the world. Rice,
stewed chicken, curried potatoes,
and channa beans dominated the
menu, allowing the visitors to be
enlightened through smiling
stomachs. For view ing pleasures
w as a screening of the movie
“The Harder They Come.”

the event, including university
professors who served as judges.

Barlow, Dr. Julie Bartley, Dr.
Dexter Byrd, Dr. William
Harper, Dr. Fran Kennedy, Dr.
Terrie Kielborn, Dr. Frank
Orr, Dr. Nancy Pencoe, Mr.
Danny Sharpe, Mr. Russell
Wallis and Dr. Micheal Waugh.
Students from the Advanced
Academy of Georgia and the
Physics Club also helped to
organize, set up, and clean up
after the fair.
After the projects were on
display for the public during the
afternoon, students, parents, and
teachers assembled for the
awards ceremony to find out
which students would advance on
to state competition. In the junior
division, all first place winners
advanced to state, and in the sen
ior division, both first and second
place winners advanced. Every
student who participated in the
regional science fair received a
Starring Jimmy Clift', the movie
portrays an upcoming Jamaican
artist who must learn to follow
his ambitions “hustle-free.”
On the following d£y,
February 21, AFRO-CASA dis
played the other half of their
heritage during “African Night.”
Dressed in traditional African
attire, the members of AFRO
CASA prepared African cuisine
jollof (spicy) rice, fried plan
tains, plantain chips, and chin
chin (fried flour dough). The
featured movie, “Wedding
Bells,” touched on Nigerian cul
ture. The film was based on
arranged marriages and dowries,
traditions among many African
cultures.
To culminate the week des
ignated to AFRO-CASA, the
organization sponsored a semi
nar on February 22, at 3:45 p.m.
in the Technology Building.

first, second, third place, or hon
orable mention ribbon, a certifi
cate and a handshake from
Powell. Ms. Mary Lue Walser,
director of the Georgia Science
and Engineering Fair, was on
hand to help present awards and
give tips to the students who will
be competing at the state compe
tition.
Awards were also given for
the best physical science project
and for the best biological sci
ence project in each of the junior
and senior divisions. The
Bell South Regional Award was
given to the project that best
demonstrated aspects of the
telecommunications industry.
These students also received a
cash award. Schools that
participated in this year's fair
included Sewell Middle, Bay
Springs Middle, Central High,
Central Middle, Mt. Zion High,
Carrollton High, Alexander
Comprehensive High, Chapel
Hill High, Chestnut Log Middle,
Fairplay Middle, Lithia Springs
High, John W. Stewart Middle,
Turner Middle and West Side
Magnet Schools.

Brandy McMichael , a State University of West Georgia graduate in biology from Atlanta, has received a
West Georgia Graduate School Research Award, which recognizes outstanding research conducted by gradu
ate students for their theses, research projects, or dissertations. The title of Me Michael's thesis was

env DNA Vaccination. " On hand for the presentation were Dr Berheruz Sethna, university president: Dr.
Jack Jenkins, dean of the Graduate School: McMichael; and Dr. Lea Fox, professor of biology.
