Whether it is the HOPE Scholarship, grants, loans or work study programs, the Office of Financial Aid is the key to vast resources available to students seeking to further their education. The staff of the Office of Financial Aid is ready to assist students - from the overwhelmed freshman to veteran students just College of Education to host 2005 Convocation program By UWG Public Relations The University of West Georgia’s College of Education will host its 2005 Convocation Program on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Education Center, Rooms 3 and 4. Dr. Wanda West, superintendent of Twiggs County Public Schools, will deliver the keynote address and outstanding students, scholarship recipients and retired College of Education faculty and staff will be honored. West, a native of Macon, is the first female superintendent in the Twiggs County School system. Under her leadership, all schools in Twiggs County acquired initial accreditation in 1999 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and obtained re accreditation in 2004. West has secured grants in excess of S2O million to heighten the Students still raising money to assist tsunami victims By UWG Public Relations Students and faculty at the University of West Georgia are continuing their efforts to help the victims of the Asian tsunami. A combination of various student organizations, under the name “UWG Students United,” is sponsoring a fashion show on April 25 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Food Services Building (Z-6). The theme of the fashion show will be “Heal the World: Fashion Extravaganza for Tsunami Relief.” In addition to raising money for tsunami “The Student Voice at the l niversity of West Georgia since IVJ4" needing to finish their senior year. Headed by Director Kimberly Jordan and Assistant Director Sherry Robinson, the Office has counselors available to assist students in filling out forms and wading through the processes required to obtain financial assistance. Through a network of institutional and outside support, students can receive assistance ranging from grants and scholarships, to loans and work study programs. The Financial Aid Office touches nearly every organization and department at the 'wmM. Or. Wanda West quality of programs for students and teachers. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Morris Brown College and received her masters’ degree from Mercer University. West continued her educational advancement with the University of Georgia, where she received relief, the event will also be directed at promoting the current Student Government Association (SGA) goal of “Unity” on campus. MyAmy Fashions has volunteered to provide the clothing for the models. Some of the organizations represented at the fashion show are the Black Student Alliance (BSA), Baptist Student Union (BSU), Circle K, the International Student Club and REAL: Recruiting Emerging Alumni Leaders. According to Jason Allen, SGA president, $7,500 has been donated by UWG students and University, and often obtains support or program opportunities as well. Finding out what financial aid is available and what a student is qualified forcan sometimes be an overwhelming and time consuming task, but the office staffs four full time counselors eager to help students find the best and most appropriate method of paying for their education. While there are some programs that are well known such as PELL and HOPE, others such as institutional loans. See AID page 3 alumni with an additional $2,200 contributed by the faculty and staff. Tickets for the fashion show will be $1 for students (with UWG ID) and a canned good, $2 for students without a canned good and $3 for faculty, staff and all others. Tickets will be available beginning Tuesday, April 19, in front of the UCC or at the Office of Student Activities on the second floor of the University Community Center (UCC). West is serving a second term as the Chairman of the Board of Control for the Middle Georgia RESA District. She also serves on the board of directors for the Georgia School Superintendent’s Association, the Superintendent’s Advisory Council and the Strategic Planning Committee of the Georgia School Board Association, and the Board of Directors for the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education. She was recently chosen by Governor Sonny Perdue to serve on the Board of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. SGA Election 2005 results announced Student Government President Jason Allen announced the results of the SGA elections on Monday. Allen encouraged students to take advantage of their new representatives. “These representatives are the ones that represent you, make decisions for and recommendations on behalf of you,” Allen said.
