It is all about Vader

A long time ago in a galaxy far far
away known as the 70s, George Lucas
released “Star Wars.” Then three years
later, audiences found out someone had a
father in “Empire Strikes Back.”
Then audiences found out that
someone made out with his sister another
three years later in “Return of the Jedi.”
Of what is known as the original
trilogy, a fan base the size of Denmark
spawned. Flash forward to 1999, the
fan base was stronger than ever and was
treated to another trilogy of prequels.
People are split among their love
for the Star Wars franchise, with two
prequels down, many say Lucas has two
strikes against him. He needs a homer, not
constant replays (remaking his previous
trilogy). May 19 the final prequel will hit
theaters...so what?
Episode II had Anakin slowly falling
into the dark side and taking a bride.
Episode IV has him in dark amour, in the
dark side and without a bride. It is safe to
assume we can average the two to figure
out what Episode 111 will be about.
The rise of Darth Vader! Forget that
Anakin whined and cried his way through
the previous two movies. We’re about to
see a Star Wars’ character murder half of
the cast! This movie should rock!
Then we have to various story
elements. How will Jar Jar die? How will
Padme go away? Whats the deal with Jedi
force spirits (let’s just say Liam Neeson has
been spotted near a few sets “visiting”).
Will mediclorians be explained? What
did Yoda mean when he said we must
unlearn what we have learned? How did
the Emperor pull a fast one on every body?
All of these answers will be explained!
No doubt Lucas can make the film
visually stunning. With Industrial Light
& Magic as his personal handbag, he
can pull anything out of them. CG Yoda?
No problem. With the improvement of
technology, Yoda will surely look a lot
better than he did before.
Music? John Williams has never
faltered. The Episode 111 soundtrack has
leaked. “Battle of the Heroes” is going to
surely replace “Duel of the Fates” as the
new favorite track.
Then there is the acting. lan
McDiarmid will be playing Palpatine.
Has he faulted ever when he has been on
screen? He’s getting a lot more screening

Darth Vader rises to power this summer.
time this movie.
Ewan McGregor, may have been
slightly out of it during Episode I, but
became one of the more interesting
characters of Episode 11. The wisdom of
Frank Oz will be there in digital Yoda,
and who is to argue (especially when he
learns not to underestimate the Emperor
first hand)?
Christopher Lee will show up as
Dooku, looking to grab the other arm
of Skywalker. Also a dialogue coach
recommend by Francis Ford Coppala has
been hired.
Natalie Portman has been doing
great recently outside of Star Wars with
films like “Closer,” and it doesn’t hurt
she has been recently studying Carrie
Fisher’s performance in Empire. Hayden
Christensen has done some good work in
“Shattered Glass."
Cut him some slack on the wooden
lines people. It’s not like the beloved
original movies had great dialogue.
Example: “I want to go to Toshi Station
and pick up some power converters!”
Then there is the battle between
Obi-Wan and Anakin. If hours a day are
being put into this fight, its got to be huge.
Not that the whole emotional baggage of
losing a loved one to darkness won’t be
there, because it surely will. Taking place
on the volcano planet of Mustafar, Anakin
Skywalker is going to bum in hell.
Heavily rumored is that Lucas w ill let
this film slide into PG-13. In an interview
with “60 Minutes,” he revealed he won't
remove anything to compromise the
vision of the film.
Spoiling the movie would be no fun
of course. Go pad the wallet of Lucas,
and find out what a General Grievous is.
Lucas knows what has to be done and it
looks like the film he always wanted to do
is now here.

flannel-clad fad-crashers.
If you’re still skeptical,
just go to the band’s website.
They’ve posted free, full
length MP3s that comprise
over half the new album.
Listen for yourself, and tell
me it’s not awesome.
In other news, indie
rock troopers Built to
Spill have not set an exact
date for their new album,
but we do know it- will
be sometime late this
summer or fall. Maybe
before school starts, but 1
seriously doubt it.
These guys are
infamous for pushing
release dates forward
and jerking everybody
around, so it might be next
February before we see so
much as a single.
Not that it won’t be
worth the wait. As long
as it’s somewhat better
than 2001 ’s extremely
disappointing “Ancient
Melodies of the Future”
(doesn’t the name alone just
make you want to punch
someone in their pseudo
quasi-intellectual face?).
Really, though, 1 have high
hopes for this one. But then
again I’m a sap.
And shows, you ask?
As I’m sure you know, the
Pixies have signed on for
Music Midtown, so all you
saps who missed them last
fall can stop whining now
and go catch them there.
The big news of course
is Lollapalooza, the line-up
of which was just announced
last week. Lollapa-who?
Well surprise, -kids, you
may actually want to go
this year.
Bands include the
Pixies, Weezer, Dinosaur
Jr., Cake, Deathcab for
Cutie, the Killers, Arcade
Fire and a whole lot more.
Excited? Well guess what?
Since ticket sales were
so poor last year, the act
won’t be hitting the road
this year.
It will begin and
end with one weekend in
Chicago. Nice going, kids.

Thanks a bunch.
Modest Mouse has
oh so graciously added an
Atlanta date to their tour
schedule in July (since
they’re going to be playing
Bonnaroo in Nashville
the day before anyway).
What’s that I hear?
Crickets? I thought so.
Two really exceptional
bands, the Shins and the
Decembrists, are both
playing at the Variety
Playhouse during finals
week (perfect, right?). And
the aforementioned Built to
Spill, who are always good
for a spectacular live show
full of old favorites, will be
coming to the Playhouse
May 21.
But these are just
highlights. You can find
out more for yourselves.
You’ve got eyes and
fingers and stuff, look it
up. Get on the websites of
some of Atlanta’s premier
rock clubs and see what’s
happening. Go catch a rock
show at some smoky little
dive. Get plastered. Make
it a rock ‘n roll summer.
