Usually, the newest
team in a conference is not
expected to finish in the
top four.
Thanks to a highly
regarded recruiting class
and head coach Gareth O’
Sullivan’s reputation, the
Braves are expected by
many to finish fourth in the
Gulf South Conference,
which would be good
enough for the Braves
to make it to this year’s
conference tournament.
When the Braves hit
the field tomorrow to face
Armstrong Atlantic State
at 5 p.m., there will be a
lot of new faces.
Among them will
be a pair of players with
international experience
who are expected to make
an immediate impact.
Midfielder Sarah
Solberg of Sweden has the
potential to be a scoring
threat for the Braves,
Rachel Doody of
New Zeland, one of the
team’s top signees, brings
national team experience
to the table.
Four members of
the inaugural team are
returning to the Braves
for the 2005 season.
Melissa Hastillo is
redshirting this season,
and the other three
players are expected to
bring leadership to this
year’s team.
Last year’s two
QJlje Ulcat (Gcoryutn
co-captains, defender
Stephanie Giles and
midfielder Alex Udin,
who led the team with
14 goals last season, will
both be returning.
The other returning
player, Jackie Mulligan,
will be switching to
goalkeeper this season.
Despite her lack of
experience. Mulligan has
shown she has speed and
the skills to excel at her
new position.
The regular season
will kick off this week,
starting with tomorrow
afternoon’s game against
Armstrong Atlantic.
On Saturday, UWG
will host Florida Southern
at 3 p.m. Both games will be
held at the observatory field
on campus, and admission
is free.
