My turn to take some responsibility
MAD
with Jesse Bishop
Well, well, well, it
took me all of two days
to get a call from the front
campus folks. Apparently,
my last little venture into
public social criticism
caused a few ripples. I
said ripples; pay attention,
you perverts.
Kimberly Jordan,
director of Financial
Aid, called me after she
received a call from none
other than UWG President,
Dr. Beheruz Sethna. It
seems I made an error in
my column.
Since that column
was about responsibility, I
thought there was no better
way to show this in action
other than to acknowledge

Enough is enough. I
am sick of turning on the
news and seeing the latest
death toll of Americans
and Iraqis over in Iraq. I
thought the war was over.
Didn’t Georgie boy
stand on the deck of an
aircraft carrier and declare
that the war in Iraq was
over? Yes he did. Then
why are we still there?
Who knows? All I know is
that this war is never going
to end without someone
standing up and doing
something about it.
So far, anti-war
protestors of today have
been few and far between.
A couple of years ago, on
a cold, rainy February day,
I “chased” peace marchers
through Carrollton square
that wanted Bush to give
the UN inspectors more
time before invading. They
believed that the reports
needed to be finalized.
Well, everyone
knows that the inspectors
weren’t given a chance
and Bush sent troops in to
find those WMDs. Does
anyone remember if we
found any? I didn’t think

my mistake, publicly.
I goofed. I erred. I
screwed up. How’s that the
reader ponders?
I mistakenly identified
the lady, no longer hereto
refered to as said side of
beef but as “the lady.” I said
the lady worked in Student
Financial Services.
This just isn’t true.
She actuallys works in the
cashier’s office directly
across from financial aid.
My mistake, I am sorry.
However, I am glad I
made this mistake because
Mrs. Jordan had to call me
to clear the matter up. This
lets me know that students’
voices are acknowledged
by Sethna and the others of
so. These anti-invasion
protestors were the last
ones I have seen in our
area since then.
That is wrong! We
are in the middle of a
conflict where the U.S. is
losing someone everyday
at least. Recruitment is
at an all time low and the
armed forces are running
out of people to send over
to Iraq.
Now the Bush
administration is planning
to keep U.S. troops there for
at least another three years
(cough-vietnam-cough).
A stricter version of
the Patriot Act is about to
spring upon the American
people and take away
more liberties without
us knowing it. All this is
going down and only a few
people seem to be doing
something about it.
One person is Cindy
Sheehan, a mother of an
American solider killed in
Iraq. She is leading the new
anti-war protest movement
down in Crawford, Texas.
She is protesting the
war on grounds that she
does not want more people
front campus fame.
I wanted to make a
point, and I did. I received
a call from the lady’s boss
who assured me that he
had spoken with her about
this matter. I am thrilled.
Not because someone was
reprimanded, but because
students know they have
recourse now.
In the past
administrators have
responded directly to the
newspaper editor (present
dictator excluded,
don’t get me started on
that bunch!), which is
probably the appropriate
action for them.
However, it’s fantastic
to know that these people
care at all. The current
editor is very much attuned
to student issues (he’s
actually a student, did
you know that?). It might
seem unfair that I have this
marvelous public forum
in which to call people
names, but all students
to die like her son in an
unjust war. Yes the war
is unjust. The facts have
come out time and time
again (no WMDs, abuse of
prisoners, false reasons for
invasion, occupation).
She has sparked anew
anti-war movement that
may just become as big
as the one of the Vietnam
era. I am glad someone
has finally stepped in and
taken the initiative to start
a movement. More people
need to get involved. While
Bush spoke at the VFW in
Salt Lake City, the mayor
of Salt Lake was rallying
protestors to make their
voices heard.
Everywhere that Bush
speaks, protestors are there
demanding their voices to
be heard. The American
people want the war to
be over and our men and
women home.
There is one problem:
my generation. We seem
to be just sitting on our
hands. 1 do not understand
why. This is our problem.
This affects us. A solider
from Loganville was
recently killed in Iraq who
graduated from high school
the same year I did.
A solider from
Bremen, who graduated a
few years ago, was killed
on the same day. Two
soldiers from where I’ve

should know they too can
write a letter to the editor.
I think he’s tried to make
this point, too.
Every individual
lived for the past nine
years were killed. Men and
women are dying everyday
in a war that should not
be happening. There are
whispers of bringing back
the draft in the U.S. and yet
no one from my generation
is doing anything. Enough
is enough.
It is time for us to
stand up and be heard. It is
more than just the war. We
need to show that we care
about the things that affect
this generation.
Education, health care,
jobs, the national debt,
social security and more
already affect or will affect
us. A record amount of 18-
24 year olds registered to
vote for the last election
but “forgot” to go to the
polls. We need to take a
page from the Vietnam
generation and stand up.
If you have any ounce
of disagreement with the
war or how things are
being run, then write a
letter, join an organization,
go to a protest rally (Sept.
24 in Washington D.C.,
New York City and San
Francisco), start your own,
etc. The possibilities are
endless.
Our generation should
not go down in history as
people who don’t care. We
need to go down as people
who stood for something.
on this campus has a
responsibility to the
students here; this includes
student-to-student
responsibility.
But isn’t it nice to
know that we, too, can be
recognized?
One final note, for
all the complaining I’ve
done since coming to
UWG, let me say that 1
have never had to publicly
disparage the financial aid
department. There have
been glitches, but that’s all
they’ve ever amounted to.
Tiny little glitches.
For that, I say thanks.
Students should know that
this is not always the case
with college financial aid
offices and officers. Take
some responsibility for
praise as well and let the
people who do good things
know that their services
are appreciated.
See how that works?
Everything ties together in
the end.
Letter to the editor...
'Double Vision' ludicrous
Dear Editor,
I want to extend
a warm thanks and a
clap of hands for Jake
Earl for writing such a
splendid piece of work
that is the most illusive
and absurd column of
the school year already.
Congratulations,
Mr. Earl. Nice choice
of words I have to say.
There is one minor
problem. What country
were you writing about?
You stated, “America
is becoming an
oppressive theocracy?”
You are half right.
Our Founding
Fathers did flee religious
persecution from the
Church of England
to find freedom to
worship God with no
one set of ways. Since
our Founding Fathers
founded America under
God, then we are a
theocracy just not an
oppressive one.
I believe the only
Americans being
oppressive are citizens
like you. What is ironic
are your statements,
“the greatest wrong
of the intelligent
design movement is its
undermining of our free
and secular society,”

but also to those who
wish to live in a free and
democratic nation.”
It is people like you
that are undermining our
freedom as Americans.
If our country is a free
and democratic nation
and you truly believe
that Mr. Earl, than you
have no problem of
both Intelligent Design,
a.k.a. Creationism and
Evolution being taught to
our high school students.
That is, if you
believe your own
statements that America
is a free and democratic
nation. And by the way,
it is their first amendment
right to believe one or
the other or neither.
So, to say that it
is a violation of their
first amendment for
Intelligent Design to
be taught along with
Evolution is ludicrous.
Though, I am
starting to see that your
way is the only way.
What is really occurring
in your bubble is that
you do not want other
beliefs taught that are
going to interfere with
your own belief.
Sounds like you
