discussing the possibility
of the University of West
Georgia’s athletic program
moving from Division

football and Division 1-A
for all other sports.
The university wants
to make sure it is ready to
make this change.
“Even though this has
been discussed for a while
now, we want to make
sure the time is right for
the institution and that we
have sufficient finances,”

Residence life at the University
of West Georgia is finally giving local
apartment complexes a run for their
money. Arbor View, the University’s
latest student living apartment complex,
has seen its last contractor go.
Although the apartments were
complete upon student arrival in late
August, there are always kinks to be
worked out. Maintenance crews have
been working around the clock to fix the
new residents’ minor requests. For their
part, students have been pleased with
the tremendous efforts put into making
their individual apartments meet their
everyday needs.

Those involved in the
discussion include UWG’s
president. Dr. Beheruz
Sethna, members of the
President’s Advisory
Council and the UWG
faculty senate.
The move from
Division II to Division
I would bring several
changes for the institution.
For instance, West
Georgia would have
more sports available for
students to participate
in. more scholarships
for students and the
opportunity to play teams
that are already household
names, such as Georgia

When asked her opinion about how
living there has been, senior, Simone
Griffin said, “I like it. It’s new. I’m the
first to live there. I mainly do not have
to worry about what other people have
done to the place before me. The only
thing that I do not like is the fact that I
only have a twin bed, but the big closets
and mirrors make up for it.”
Each apartment has a full kitchen
and living room set. Each room has a
closet, desk, desk chair, dresser and extra
long twin bed. The individual rooms are
also equipped with every student’s most
prized necessities: a cable outlet, phone
jack and Internet connection.
The apartments are similar to the
designs of the River’s Edge apartments,

school in the Southern

The projected
increase in UWG’s student
population is the main force
that spurred discussion of
possible movement.
“With the increase
in size, stature, programs
and facilities, I believe
that it is reasonable for
the athletics department
to move on a parallel
course and this will
eventually take us to
NCAA Division I, subject

approval,” said Sethna.

Committee ready

mascot selection

The University of West Georgia is
getting closer to the “rolling out of anew
mascot”, the new motto of the Athletic
Marketing Identity Task Force. But in
order to roll out this new mascot, UWG
needs the help of students, faculty, alumni
and friends of the university.
The Task Force, which consists
of UWG faculty, students and alumni,
has created anew online poll that they
hope will bring conclusive feedback
and the narrowing down of possible
UWG mascots.
In July, the Task Force created the first
online poll to be voted on by the UWG
community. However, the voting brought
no conclusive
favorite. The
Task Force then
created a website
to gain feedback
and inform
students about
the situation.
The recenly updated website, w hich

edu, includes the new online poll and
information about each possible mascot.
To ensure that each individual votes
only once, a registration number must
be entered before voting. For students,
this number is the same as their student
ID number.
The number of possible mascots was
changed from eight to twelve. After the
lack of feedback from the first poll, the
Task Force again reviewed the list of 110
initial suggestions given by the UWG
community and decided on the twelve
possible mascots.
There are five that were included on
the first online poll: Firebirds, Mustangs,
Patriots, Power and Red Hawks. The
new additional seven nicknames are
Bears, Coyotes, Dragons, The Brave,
Thunderbirds, Tornadoes and Wolves.
The website contains additional
information on each nickname, such as

other schools that have the particular
mascot, what the sideline mascot and

publication and food court which pertain
to each nickname.
The Task Force included this new
information in order for students to
make informed decisions, according
to Dr. Tara Singer, Vice-President for
University Advancement and Chair of
the Task Force.
“Hindsight is always 20/20 and we
learned our lesson early on,” Singer said.
This new information gives students
a chance to explore other possible aspects
of the mascot before voting.
Another decision that the Task Force
made was to advertise the new online
poll and get the word out to the UWG
to Singer, many efforts have been made
to notify students, alumni, and faculty of
the new poll. A blast email was sent to all
UWG student email accounts. The new
website and poll are advertised on the
entrance to the UWG portal.
Alumni received the Braves Banner
Newsletter and all individuals on the
alumni database received a postcard
including the mascot information. This
postcard contains the registration number
needed for alumni, faculty and friends of
UWG to vote.
All faculty and staff listings received
an announcement. The Sept. 18 issue of
