After a disappointing
season last year the Braves
are geared up to prove that
they have what it takes to
win. The West Georgia
softball team aims to
make it to the conference
tournament this year by
placing at least fourth in
the Gulf South Conference
eastern division.
“This is an extremely
competitive conference,
and on any given day, any
team can win,” said head
coach Erika Swanson.
“Last year was upsetting
because we are a much
better team than our
record showed. We have a
great batting average and
an excellent work ethic
and attitude.”
One of the team’s
biggest challenges will be
to keep the players healthy
throughout the season.
“We only have 12

players this year, and
they can all play different
positions, but no one needs
to get hurt,” said Swanson.
Three of the five
freshmen on the team will
be starting this year. Alana
Bailey will be a pitcher and
outfielder, Kim Weaver is a
shortstop and Kacie Crider
is a pitcher.
“Our freshmen have
the ability to make some
waves this season,”
Swanson said.
The upper-classmen
are expected to shine
this year providing good
leadership to the team.
Whitney Monk is the
team’s only senior.
“I hope that the
underclassmen follow me
and my hard work. It takes
a lot of hard work to be the
best,” said Monk.

record and their attitudes.

are down and have a good

are winning or losing,”
said junior Mary Carlisle.
This season the
Braves will continue to
play at Oil Park on South
Park Street. According to
Swanson, the University’s
continued growth and
football stadium plans
bring possibilities of a
new soccer and softball
field on campus in the
next three years.
“Oil Park is close to
campus, but cosmetically
it isn’t the most attractive.
However, they do a great
job of preparing the field
and making it ready to play
on,” Swanson said.
The first game of the
season will be on the road
at Albany State on Saturday
at 1 p.m. The first home
game for the team will be
on Monday at 2 p.m.
“We have more heart
this year—we are ready
to play and win,” said
Carlisle.
