The Braves had
a tough road ahead of
them last week as they
played six games against
three opponents with a
combined record of 48-14.
West Georgia discovered
the teams were as good as
advertised, and they lost
four of their six games.
The team began the
week with a doubleheader
against Delta State in
Cleveland, Miss.
In the first game, the
Braves jumped on the
board early with six runs
in the first inning. Whitney
Monk caused the most
damage in the inning, as
she hit her first home run
of the year to plate three.
West Georgia would add
two more the following
frame, with Adrienne Clay
also going deep for the
first time. The rout was on
from there, and the Braves
won 9-3. ■
The finale was a
far cry from the opening
game. This time, it was
Delta State’s turn to strike
first, as they brought home
two in the first inning to
put the Braves in a hole.
But West Georgia would
fight their way back with
four runs over the next two
innings to take a 4-3 lead
going into the fourth.
Both teams added two
runs in the fifth inning, but
Delta State would provide
the drama in the seventh
in the form of a walkoff
two run shot off the bat

of Alyse Hasty to win the
game 7-6.
The Braves came back
home to Oil Park on Friday
to take on Carson-Newman
in another doubleheader.
The story of the
opening game was the
performance of freshman
pitcher Kacie Crider.
Crider went the distance
and pitched a two hit
shutout, while striking out
12 for the third time in two
weeks. The two runs West
Georgia scored early held
up, and the Braves got the
2- victory.
In the nightcap, the
Braves’ bats turned cold
and the team could only
manage four hits. Carson-
Newman did very little
damage themselves, but
it was enough to get the
3- victory.
Braves’ head coach
Erika Swanson was unhappy
with her team’s offensive
output on the day.
“The reason we won
the first game is because
Kacie [Crider] had 12
strikeouts for us,” said
Swanson. “We had more
hits in the first game (than
the second game), but we
should have scored way
more than two runs in the
first game.”
The Braves ended
the week against the 18th
ranked Barry Buccaneers
The opening game
would be an epic. Crider
and Barry’s Ramie
Garcia went head-to
head for the duration.
At the end of seven,
neither team had pushed
across a run, so the game
went into extra innings.
After an uneventful, but
controversial eighth, Barry
looked poised to win in
the ninth as they took a 2-
0 lead in the inning.
But West Georgia
had some fireworks of
their own in their half of
the ninth. Mary Carlisle
was placed on second to
begin the frame and was
immediately brought in
by a Monk double to right.
Monk would advance to
third on a groundout. Celia
Petty then singled up the
middle to bring in Monk
and retie the game at two.
In the 11th, Barry
struck again to regain the
lead at 3-2. This time, the
Braves did not have an
answer, and they took the
tough 3-2 loss.
Swanson felt her team
missed their chances to
win the game.
“We had plenty of
opportunites to win that
game, and we just didn’t.
We just didn’t do what we
needed to do to win,” said
Swanson. “In that sense,
[the first game] was very
heartbreaking.”
Barry scored runs in
the first three innings of
the second game to take
a 4-0 lead into the fourth.
The Braves would get on
the board in the inning, but
the Bucs would answer in
the fifth to regain their four
run advantage. The Braves
could not start a rally in
their final three at bats and
fell 6-2.
In the game. West
Georgia stranded a total of
nine runners.
