“The Mikado,” an 1885
comic operetta written by
Gilbert Sullivan, was brought
back to life by the West
Georgia Opera Workshop
Thursday evening.
The opera was written
as a satire that criticized
Victorian English society
through the disguise of
ancient Japan. The opera
was a delightful mix of
musical expertise and

comedic delivery by the all
student cast. Every student
in the opera wore traditional
Japanese kimonos and
donned black wigs for the
performance.
Each member of the cast
was a part of the Department
of Music, but the students
showed off their theatrical
capabilities as well. Matt
Jones, who played the
part of Ptxih-Bah, proved
particularly convincing in his
role as a stuffy town official
whose seriousness became
satirical.
The six-member
ensemble, which included
Alton fowler. Holly
Kaylor, Holly Nations,
Jessica Sheffield, Nick
Sylvestri and Cori Walls
provided expert projection
of songs like “Three Little
Maids from School are
We” and "So Please You,
Sir. We Much Regret." The
women in the ensemble
represented how Victorian
society viewed its women:
as giggling schoolgirls only
useful for marriage.

Andrew Scott and Matt
Jones, who played the
Tittipu officials, humorously
showed, scene by scene,
the corruption and personal
greed that dominated
Victorian government.
“The Mikado” is a series
of humorous complications
that occur because of “the
law.” but the officials always
find a way to get out of its
consequences if it does not
suit their needs.
This officials'corruption
is evident even in the
second scene with Michael
Rumanian, who played the
Lord High Executioner.
Rumanian’s character was
scheduled for execution
because of flirting but was
named Lord High Executioner
by Tittipu officials instead.
The end of “The
Mikado" has a sense of
justice even if the society
of Gilbert and Sullivan’s
day did not. The characters

Blanchard, and Nanki-Poo.

The March 9
performance proved that
government corruption is
a universal and timeless
theme.
