Students entering the
University of West Georgia
have often spent a great
deal of time anticipating
all the new experiences
they will encounter and
making decisons that can
alter their college career.
These decisons
include what to eat. which
classes to take, or even
how long should one stay
out on a Thursday night.
But what of the
unexpected? When the
fall sniffles turn into a
full-blown cold or when a
race across campus leads
to a twisted ankle? That's
when the Department of
Health Services steps in.
Students can feel
completely at ease with
Health Services, located
across from the University
Community Center.
Students with ongoing
or significant health issues
can easily have their
care coordinated with
their home physician by
contacting the department.
Most ongoing care can be
provided on campus.
The department
provides a gynecology
clinic, a fully staffed
pharmacy, and can assist
in family planning and
can arrange psychological
services through the

The staff, which
is headed by Dr. Leslie
Cottrell, boasts a total
of two pharmacists, two
nurse practitioners, four
registered nurses, three
licensed practical nurses,
a patient advocate, and
a health educator who
is a registered nurse and
certified teacher.
The Health Services

important training ground
for nursing students and
pre-pharmacy, and is the

In addition to the
classroom experience,

In March 2006, the
University added eleven
cardiac defibrillators
around campus for use in
the event of emergency.
The small box shaped
units are designed to
recognize and correct the
most common cardiac
conditions that are found
during “heart attacks” by
sending an electric current
to a heart that has stopped.
Studies show that as
many as 50,000 lives can
be saved annually across
the country if automated
defibrillators were
more readily available
nationwide.
The machines are
located strategically
around campus, including
Health Services, Public
Safety offices, Intramurals
& Recreational Services,
the Alumni House. Public
Safety Patrol Cars, and
UWG Shuttle Buses.
Only CPR certified
persons can use the
automated defibrillators.
Public Safety and 911 must
be notified in the event the
use of the defibrillators is
required.
The facility is
equipped to handle most
minor accidents and most
emergencies occurring
on campus.
They work also in
conjunction with Tanner
Medical Center and local
EMS providers, as services
are needed.
Students needing a
little extra care can take
advantage of the clinic’s
