Wolves prepared for UWG volleyball to make
opener with Blue Hose debut as Wolves

“We were their
[Presbyterian | 12th man
early in the game last
year,” said Head Coach
Mike Ledford.
In 2005, Presbyterian
came sprinting out of the
gate, playing extremely
well. UWG only helped the
Blue Hose’s efforts with
pivotal turnovers early in
the contest.
Ledford believes that
will not be the case this time
around. “It [2005) gave us
coaches an opportunity to
use it as a learning tool.
What it takes to prepare to
win,” said Ledford.
Even though the game
will be at home this time
around, it will be a daunting
task. Presbyterian is a
consensus preseason top
10 team that returns most
key contributors from a
year ago, and as usual will
be well-coached.
The opener this
Saturday looms large for
several reasons.
The Wolves want to
avoid another 0-2 start
and with D-l A A power
Furman next on the slate, a
win against Presbyterian is
a must.

The schedule doesn’t
get any easier after Furman,
as the Wolves will travel
to play defending GSC
champions Arkansas Tech
and will not have a single
home game in the month
of September.
like
P.C. and the
fact that they
beat us like
that last year is
embarrassing.
“I don’t know that
anyone has a tougher
schedule to begin the
season than we do,” said
Ledford.
In 2005, the game was
as ugly as anyone could
imagine. The defense gave
up a whopping 48 points
and the offense was inept
for most of the contest,
scoring just 13 points
leading to a 48-13 loss.
Odell Willis figures to
be a key defender for the
Wolves this time around
and is confident entering
Saturday’s contest. “When
we have our stuff down,
nobody can stop us. On
both sides of the ball, we
are better than we were last
year,” said Willis.
The loss to the Blue
Hose last year has still not
left the memory of senior
fullback Brian Davis. “We
don’t like P.C. and the fact
that they beat us like that
last year is embarrassing.
We are definitely ready
for them this year,” said
Davis.
As important as
this weekend’s game is,
Ledford is unwilling to
put too much pressure
on his staff and players,
commenting “It is what it
is. This football game is
one out of ten that we have
and we want to win all of
them.”
The UWG football
program will make their
debut as the Wolves this
Saturday at Grisham
Stadium at 7:00 p.m.,
where they will host the
Presbyterian College
Blue Hose. For more

Friday the UWG
volleyball team will be
the first team to compete
as the Wolves. The
volleyball team will not
only unveil anew mascot,
but a very different look
from last year. There
are only five players
returning from last year
and of those five only
one is a senior, Snellville
native Siha Collins.
It could be a cause for
concern for most coaches
with only five returning
players and experience
lacking, but head coach
Regan Adams, entering
her second year at UWG,
feels experience and
leadership will not be a
problem.
"We’ve talked a lot
about goal setting and
leadership and have a
good mix of those who
lead by example and those
who lead vocally,” said
Adams.
Last season the team
made it to the post-season
tournament but w as ousted
early by Harding.
Just making the
post-season was quite an
achievement considering
it was Adams’ first year
at the helm and several
players had transfered.
One transfer, 2004
GSC East Freshman of the
Year Morgan Kilpatrick
was a difficult blow to
cope with, but in the end
last year’s squad cleared
every hurdle placed in
front of them.
A return trip to the
post-season is a key goal
for the 2006 squad as well
as making a long run into
the tournament.
“1 think we can finish
in the top three in the
conference and return to
the post-season. It’s very
competitive and every
match is important,” said
Adams.
The frustrating
part of 2005 was the
winning streaks followed
by losing streaks with
consistency completely
lacking throughout the
season. In 2006, Adams
feels the team will have
consistency and hopes
losing streaks will be few'
and far between.
“We have a great
personality and great
outlook and expect to go
to the tournament, and
that’s half the battle,” said
Adams.
Arguably the most
qlic Iflcgt Okwaian
dynamic player on
the roster is Carolin
Schoeneck, a preseason
All-GSC player and a
first team All-GSC just a
year ago. Schoeneck will
be counted on to make
the big plays and lead the
team to the postseason for
a third consecutive year.
Not only does the
season look bright on the
court, but off the court
as well. Last season the
team had nine players
make the Gulf South
Conference Academic
Honor Roll, which is
reserved for players with
a cumulative GPAof3.O
or higher. Of those nine
from 2005, three return
for 2006.
The UWG volleyball
team will start the season
against Northwood at the
Univ. of West Florida
Tournament at 1:15 p.m.
on Friday.
In all this weekend
the team will play four
games in the West Florida
Tournament. There will be
two games Friday including
Ashland at 8:00 p.m. On
Saturday they will face
Edinboro at 10:00 a.m. and
Eckerd at 4:45 p.m.
