Much like The
Dresden Dolls, Denmark’s
The Horror Pops are a
newer band that is worthy
of being in my CD player
and on the w alls of younger
people all over the world.
The band is led by
Patricia Day. She is one
of the best in the recent
crop of female singers in
punk-influenced bands.
She also plays double
bass, which is the only
thing that preserves the
psychobilly label for the
band.
One of the band’s
guitarists is KimNekroman.
He is the longtime bass
player of The Nekromantix
and the husband of Day.
The other guitarist is
original API member Geoff

from telling teenage girls to
cut themselves to playing
fun songs about zombies
was probably tough, but if
anyone could pull that off it
is Kresge. Rounding out the
current lineup is drummer
Henrik Neidermeier.
"Bring It On!”, last
year’s follow-up to 2004’s
"Hell Yeah!”, proves that
The Horror Pops are more
than just a Nekrotnan side
project.
The first track,
“Freaks in Uniforms”,
starts the album off the
right way, as it showcases
the unique voice of Day.
If you don’t like Day’s
voice, this will be a long
album. If you do like her
singing, you’ll think this
is one of the best albums
Hellcat has released in
years.
“Hit N’ Run” is the
first taste of how Day
views the sometimes
heartless opposite sex.
She really wins over my
Riot Grrri friends, which
is not an easy thing to do

sometimes.
The title track is
about what you would
expect from a mainstream
psychobilly band. I
never expected to be
able to refer to a band
as that, but I guess the
record companies can
put anything in a pretty
package.
The opening chords
of “It’s Been So Long”
remind me of one of my
all-time favorite singles
“Typical Girls” by The
Slits. It is not identical
and it is not even played
in the same style, but
there are some obvious
similarities. 1 can't think
of a better band for a
female-centered band to
emulate. The song itself
is outstanding, with its
catchy chorus.
My favorite
Horror Pops song is
“Undefeated”, and it has
to be the highlight of this
album. Day’s story of “my
band, my friends, my life,
my pride” is a favorite of
plenty of young punks.
“You vs. Me”,
which features lyrics
like “A kick to the groin
leaves us enemies”, is
another statement of
independence by Day.
Hopefully, hardcore
and oi fans will not get
bored before the seventh

track, because that is the
obligatory drinking song.
“Crawl Straight Home”
is one of the more punk
sounding tunes, in both its
lyrics and the song itself.
This is a nice change of
pace from the scorned
lover type songs. “Need
someone to hold my hair”
is not a state that 1 would
want to be in personally,
but I guess a lot of students
could probably relate to
those lyrics.
Then. Day talks
about being caught in a
trap. Not like Elvis. He’s

dead. “Trapped’’ is a nice
anti-love song. Love is
"a total mind abortion”,
after all.
"Walk Like a
Zombie” is a change of
pace towards the end of
the album, and its clever
lyrics make it worthy of
some radio play.
Other tracks like
“SOB.” and “Who’s
Leading You Now?” are
catchy enough for younger
fans yet showcase a great
psychobilly band that
should impress fans of
the Nekromantix.

Overall, 1 really like
this album. The group is
known to put on a good
live show, but honestly
they are more of a studio
band. It's great to see the
dancing girls, especially
Kamilla Vanilla, but
purchasing this album
is the best way to
introduce yourself to
The Horror Pops.
This is not a classic
release, but my hope is
that it will turn young
fans on to similar music
that truly is great, like
The Cramps.
