Letters to the editor...
The Richards family
responds to column
Dear Editor,
We are writing in
response to a column
written by Kevin Hemphill
that appeared in The West
Georgian on September 13,
2006 (p. 5).
Hemphill has
somehow gotten the
impression that students
were not only left out of
“Centennial Day”, but
that tew activities have
been planned for them as
this year-long celebration
continues.
To the contrary, a
broad range of centennial
activities focusing on the
interests and requests of
students has already taken
place and many more such
activities have yet to occur.
Although it is true
that the original student
representative on the
Centennial Committee
graduated over the summer,
she served actively for many
months and the Student
Government Association has
been involved in the planning
for nearly a year. Anew SGA
representative was appointed
upon her graduation.
Representatives of
that group and of the Black
Student Alliance (BSA)
have also collaborated with
the Steering Committee.
A Student Activities
staff member also
represents students on the
Steering Committee.
Letters went out to
all student organizations
last fall inviting them to

Quit complaining about

So, what will the opinion
on unions and the parking
situation be this week?
Are these viruses that are
apparently slowing down my
computer the reason I can’t
get Youtube to work? I miss
that silly website.
I really liked that Braves
article. They have pulled off
an amazing accomplishment.
Let’s just hope the Mets don’t
win it all.

and all proposals received
by the Steering Committee
in response to this call
were approved and most
received funding at the
level requested.
As students returned
to campus on August 11,
numerous Welcome Week
events were enhanced with
centennial funding.
The fireworks display
was “bigger and better
than ever” and 1,000
centennial t-shirts were
distributed to students.
A "Real Deal Weekend”
sponsored by the BSA
received Centennial funding.
ITiese are the events student
leaders asked us to consider
supporting as part of the
Centennial celebration.
On August 18,
students were invited
to participate in several
activities sponsored by
various departments
on campus, e.g.:
Department of Sociology/
Criminology poster
display; Little Tallapoosa
River clean-up and
cookout sponsored by
the Department of
Geosciences; presentation
of the history and
development of the
College of Education;
Richards College of
Business picnic for
students, faculty and
staff and the tree-planting
ceremony featuring a
centennial birthday cake.
Many centennial
events are enhanced
versions of regularly
occurring activities with a
centennial theme.
For example, the
EXCEL Center success
seminars that occur each
semester are taking place
with a centennial theme.
Other events that
will be enhanced with
centennial funds include
Homecoming, the BSA
Step Show, Spring-Fling
and the spring talent show.
Students have or wi 11 be
directly involved in several
departmental projects - the
Dining Experience of the
Century, a centennial mura,
the 30th anniversary of
the Nursing program, the
40th anniversary of the
Humanistic orientation
in Psychology and many
more.
Some of the activities
associated with the
Centennial are service
oriented, some are aimed
at educating students
about the history and
development of UWG,
many are expressions
of gratitude for past
contributions and some
activities are just for fun
and fellowship.
Any member of the
Steering Committee would
have been glad to meet w ith
Hemphill to assist in his fact
finding concerning student
centennial activities.
The Centennial
Celebration has gotten off
to a wonderful start and we
look forward to the year
long observance involving
students, faculty, staff,
alumni and community
friends.

I realize that this

It just seems to me that
apathy and indifference

I am really tired of
