Peel is the love doctor
The View
From My Front Porch
With Larry Peel

Lewis Grizzard once
wrote the following about
marriage: “I don’t think
I’ll do it again. I’ll just
find a woman I don’t like
and buy her a house.”
I very nearly became
a living reminder of that
train of thought had it not
been for a couple of very
good lawyers. However,
my miserable love life is
not the topic of today’s
Front Porch life lesson.
Yours is.
That’s right, I am
talking to all you fine,
intelligent readers of
my little piece of media
glitz, and I am prepared
to bestow the wisdom
garnered from two failed
marriages and countless
relationships (some more
meaningful than others).
Now, before you stop

A challenge to students
The Editor’s Box

If things are going
to get done, students are
going to have to do it.
I know that sounds
negative to some, but that
is the exact thought that
popped in my head last
week when I was writing
an article about recycling.
If our campus’
recycling program is going
to work as well as it can,
students are going to have
to step up and practice and
promote recycling.
As students, we are
often so wrapped up in
our classes and social lives
that we lose sight of how
much the student body
actually accomplishes on
this campus.
From undergraduates to
graduate research assistants,
there are quite a few student
workers on campus.
Also, look at the
groups on campus.
Just because we have
faculty advisors does not

an idiot I am for giving
advice when my own past
is littered with the debris
of broken hearts from one
coast to the other, let me
explain.
I am not going to tell
you what I did do; I am
going to tell you what I
should have done.
This column is
geared mostly toward the
men in my audience, but
all you ladies can learn
a few things about us
in the process perhaps.
Maybe you can just clip
the column and staple it
to his forehead.
First, we fellas
will learn a brand new
concept; communication.
Yes I said it. The “C”
word.
Girls, especially
younger girls as this
university is overflowing
mean that students do not
do a bulk of the work at
UTV, The West Georgian,
the SGA and the various
diversity groups on
campus.
I could go on and on
and I would still leave out
plenty of examples.
Students are
everything from camera
operators and copy editors
to academic mentors and
tutors on this campus, but
there are other things that
can be done on campus.
I know a lot about
community service. Not
because of anything illegal
I have done, mind you. It
is because I am an Eagle
Scout. Overseeing the
building of 70 bird and
bat houses and making
sure that most of those got
mounted was not an easy
or fun task, but I certainly
felt accomplished when it
was all over.
Sororities and
with them, think
everything is love.
Most guys in this
university think love
is just an acronym for
foreplay. If you don’t
respect your lady enough
to be honest about
what you want from a
relationship, then at least
respect yourself enough.
Most of you will
eventually develop a
conscience and the things
you do tonight may keep
you up nights when you
are 35.
Girls, that means if
you don’t want him to lie,
don’t push him into telling
one. Most of the time,
women can read a man
much better than he can
read you. So if it seems
he is only out for a good
time, either pay for the
ride or get off the train.
Next, in the event
you have found someone
you want to be with for a
length of time - let’s not

fraternities know a lot
about service projects, too.
In fact, one of my regrets
so far this semester is how
little coverage they have
received since those groups
do a lot of good and often
get very little credit for it.
So, if most students
are used to working hard
to help make this campus
a better place, and if some
of us are not strangers
to service projects, then
something like recycling
should not even be an issue
on campus.
We can all do our
own little part. Make sure
your friends know where
the local recycling centers
are, don’t be careless and
put bottles and cans in the
bins that are specifically
for paper and also get
rid of trash before your
apartment looks like a
disaster site.
To put it in a
perspective that those of
us who are from the so
called “Bible Belt” can
understand, let’s be good
stewards of the world
that God has given us.
Recycling is a small part
of doing just that.

In defense of Mark Taylor
The Progressive
Perspective
With Skyler Akins
In last week’s West
Georgian, there were some
accusations made that
dismissed Mark Taylor’s
candidacy for Governor.
Well, Unlike Ellis
Smith, I think it is
important that we examine
the real facts behind the
accusations made, because
it is people like Smith that
are holding the people of
Georgia back.
“His (Sonny Purdue|
land deal has been greatly
reported on and nobody
has stopped to think he
may have made a mistake,”
Smith said.
Well Smith, Maybe
you see something that I
don't here, but I don’t see
how it’s a mistake to buy a
S2O million piece of land
for $2 million, and then
some rich executive that
gave you the deal is now
on our states economic
board.
Furthermore, why is
it two days before Purdue
had to pay land on this
new property that he,
along with Casey Cagle,
wrote a bill that would
exempt mainly Purdue
and a very few of the
very richest investors
from paying taxes on the
S2O million dollar piece
of land he only paid $2
million for.
I’m sorry Mr. Smith,
but I just don’t buy that
they were mistakes, and
I am confident the people
of Georgia don’t either.
Smith said, “It is
necessary to look back
to the circumstances
that made him [cut
education]”, in reference
to the 9/11 recession.
I cannot begin to
examine the invalidity in
this. When is it okay to
cut a billion dollars from
education, especially when
the changes most directly
effect Georgia’s special
education children? Sonny

Purdue also was
handed a surplus under the
Barnes Administration,
and you wouldn’t know
that judging by his
advertisements claiming
he turned a deficit into a
surplus, which have not
passed any truth tests.
Let me tell you the
truth, my friends. There
was a surplus under
Democratic Governor Roy
Barnes, and it is illegal
under Georgia law to
deficit spend.
Add lying about the
budget/economic conditions
to “Sonny’s Did List”.
Purdue also didn’t
hesitate to give himself
a SIOO,OOO tax cut as
mentioned before, or did he
responsibly budget to put
Georgia’s children first.
“Lt. Governor Mark
Taylor is endorsed by
the Georgia branch of
the National Education
Association (NEA), one of
the most liberal unions in
the country,” according to
Smith.
The lack of research
on Mr. Smith is very
apparent here. Let met give
you the facts. The NEA
deals only with national
issues on a federal level,
and the state chapters such
as the Georgia Association
of Educators (GAE)
endorse and support local
educational issues.
The two work
together, but on most
issues they don’t really
deal with each other.
Smith’s claim that they
only endorse the most
liberal candidates is
ridiculous, as the GAE
has endorsed State

The GAE is composed
of well over 20,000
teachers in Georgia, and if
you knew anything about
Georgia politics you’d
know the very reason
Purdue was elected is
because the GAE was
extremely upset with
Governor Barnes over his
education reform packets.
The GAE has since
given its full endorsement,
from 20,000+ harding
work teachers in Georgia,
to Taylor.
The other accusation
made about vouchers are
true. Vouchers are a bad
idea and most educators
in the state oppose them,
as we have a little thing
called Separation of
Church and State.
Smith, if you were to
make these overly false
claims anywhere else,
you’d have about 20,000-
30,000 mad Georgia
teachers on your case,
as most all of them are
supporting Taylor 100%,
and I’m sure that you
calling them one of the
most liberal groups in the
state wouldn’t fly to well
with those small town
conservative teachers,
which by the way are
supporting Taylor.
Taylor will work hard
for the people of Georgia,
and I say that with an
honest heart.
Taylor led the fight
to create the HOPE
Scholarship, gave the
largest tax cuts in Georgia’s
history by eliminating the
state sales tax on groceries,
and passed the HEROs
Bill to honor Georgia’s
citizens serving our state
and country abroad.
No matter how you
look at it, Taylor has been
there for the people of
Georgia, and I know from
working with him for over
a year now that he is ready
to lead Georgia forward.
Taylor won’t wake up
every morning thinking
of how to make himself a
little richer, but w ill wake
up with the people of
Georgia on his mind, and
that’s the Taylor I know.
