So t have prowlers nearby campus, yet for some reason nearly half of the emergency towers around campus are ‘Out of Service’ for months at a time. How is that watching out for the students’ safety?^ - Anonymous UWG Student Rant And the award goes t 0... The View From My Front Porch With Larry Peel larry@ioncinema.com The awards season is upon us; incredible heartache, rapturous joy, and hours upon hours of television coverage that many people will ignore, opting for Internet coverage the next day. I was fortunate enough to be chosen as part of this year's Daytime Emmy Awards. This is my first year being involved in the back end of the events. 1 have watched the award shows many times; as have most of you 1 am sure, but this year I ventured into new territory. In July of last year, I began anew phase in my career. Having spent 20 years practicing ditch medicine (1 was an EMT), I had returned to schcx)l here to pursue a totally different venture. 1 began writing for this paper and for the magazine lonCinema. 1 also joined the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. It is in the latter Republicans Fail, Democrats Deliver THE PROGRESSIVE PERSPECTIVE With Skyler Akins November was a very good month for me, but an even better month for the American people, because the American people voted for their hopes and not their fears. The American people voted for a New Direction in America, one that puts the interest of the people above the top one percent wealthiest Americans and their lobbyists. The American people overwhelmingly elected Democrats, Democrats that preach the hope and Optimism that is instilled in every American; the people rejected the divisive politics of fear agenda that the Republicans have been practicing in Washington. In the first hundred hours of the new Democratic Congressional, Majority Democrats have already put the hard Qllje West (Seonjtmt The University of West Georgia University Community Center, Room 111 Carrollton, GA, 30118-0070 Editorial Line: (678) 839-6527 Advertising Manager: (678) 839-4783 Editorial E-mail: uwgpaper@westga.edu Advertising E-mail: paperads@westga.edu On the web at http://www.thewestgeorgian.com role that I found a unique experience, which I would like to share with you. The Academy is best known for the Emmy's®, which grants esteem to those who chose television as their primary venue and have excelled in their art. Probably best known are the Prime Time Emmy Awards, which garners the largest audience and is given all the glitz and glamour Hollywood can muster. That spectacle is followed closely by the Daytime Emmy Awards, which focuses on the New York side of the broadcast spectrum, granting privilege to soap operas, news programs and talk shows. What is not so commonly known however, is that there are far more awards given out than the public sees. The persons behind the scenes; producing, directing, even providing the makeup and set designs, are all highly working middle class at the top of their list, a move the Republican majority didn’t take in their ten year domination of Congress. The Democrats have cut the interest rate on student loans in half. That’s right, when you go to the financial aid office on Ay cock Drive to take out a student loan, your interest rate is going to be three percent instead of almost seven percent under Republican leadership. The Democratic majority has raised the minimum wage from five twenty-five to seven twenty-five an hour for working families, a raise that hasn’t occurred in over ten years. Now America’s hardest workers can finally get ahead, instead of living paycheck to paycheck as they did under Republican domination. The majority skilled professionals who are honored for their work as well. This year I was granted the honor of serving as a judge for the Daytime Emmy Awards. Sounds glamorous right? Wrong. Now don't misunderstand me, it was an incredible honor and privilege to serve on the panel, but 1 didn't meet anyone famous, or even get to go to New York. I was assigned to the Consumer Business and News panel, and we were meeting in Atlanta. It seems there are vary ing locations for voting, each rotating through categories so as to offer as objective a sample as possible. This time Atlanta was chosen to handle this particular Emmy . Picture seven people sitting in a studio in downtown, sipping coffee, nibbling pastries, and watching reel after reel of investigative reports and consumer headlines. We had our checklist of relevant things to look for in each feature -a list I cannot share, because then I would have to kill you, and there are far too many of you to track down. Each of us scribbled our own thoughts is also ending tax breaks for big oil companies, and restoring equality and justice to our nation’s tax system. Embryonic Stem Cell research is no longer a thing of the past. Now the nation’s leading scientists will have the financial ability to conduct research on embryo’s that can, and will save millions of lives in the United States by curing some of our most atrocious diseases. My party has ended the culture of corruption, the culture of private golf trips and luxury jets provided by corporate lobbyists that have topped the Republican agenda in Washington, by creating the most transparent and open Congress in the history of the United States. The Congressional Reform Act is so ethical, that it has even earned the approval of some of the most Conservative interest groups in our country. The Democrats will also make sure that our men and women serving in Iraq come home soon, and come home safe. The President’s plan to escalate the war in Jesse Duke, Editor-in-Chief Stephanie Smith, Advertising & Business Manager Larry Peel, News Editor Josh Boatright, Sports Editor Elizabeth Bounds, A&E Editor Josh Grubb, Photo Editor Rebecca Cheek, Copy Editor Yen Nguyen, Distribution Manager Erik Waters, Webmaster Doug Vinson, Advisor Opinion and comments on legal pads, mine being mostly in a shorthand which myself and perhaps one person in the CIA could decipher. We broke for lunch to ponder ourchoices, acatered feast befitting our imagined status as the royalty of the Atlantaentertainment world, and discussed and argued our personal favorites. We would review a few of the reels after lunch for clarification purposes, and would torture the television stations interns for coffee refills and the like for a couple of more hours before taking our vote. All in all it was not an easy day. there was no limousine to take me through the gridlock of the downtown connector on a Thursday afternoon, nor was there a lovely hostess in a fine designer gown to guide me up the red carpet to the studio’s entrance. Instead I bounced my SUV up the interstate, parked in the visitor lot and followed a haggard and exhausted news intern through a non descript building where I was locked in a dark room with six strangers for six hours. It was one of the greatest days of my life. Iraq by twenty thousand troops only adds more fuel to the already immense fire. We had no purpose to invade them in the first place, and we have no reason to stay there any longer, four years is four years too long. President Bush has had enough chances in four years to end this immoral war, and he has failed us every time. The message is clear from the American people to President Bush: Stop putting our men and women in uniform in harms way for YOUR war Mr. President, bring our troops home now! With everything from raising the minimum wage to cutting student interest rates on loans, I take pride in knowing that I belong to the Democratic Party, the party that represents the backbone of the American people, the backbone that is the driving force of the American dream and of the American way of life. My party is the party of the people, and not the party of the Rich and privileged, and the people of Georgia will realize that soon enough, just like the other forty nine states in the US have. In myspace, no one can hear you scream By (.rant Wallace Guest Writer f>rannntfi7@yahoo.com Myspace. One word says it all. Now' I'm not here to tell you that you may or may not have problems for wanting to have an intimate relationship with something thats ends in a “.com”, because that would just make me a hypocrite. Unfortunately, I’m here to feed your addiction and make sure your page is kept safe, so read up. Now most of these issues I’ve only seen with Myspace, so Facebook definitely seems like the safer bet to keep your seven hundred friends at bay. First example; seen bulletins you haven’t’ been posting? Just change your password. I’ve actually seen a site where thousands of people have had their myspace’s hacked, and their username and password |X)sted online for anyone to log in to their my space. They seem to be filtering around quite frequently lately, and 1 was lucky enough to catch one not too long ago. And yes, I did Quest front puge 2 as unsubstantial, childish fare with value only lying with collectors. This may be changing however as comic based movies bring the genre into the public eye. Did you know there is now even a graphic novel class offered at UWG? Greg is one of the many who feel that eventually the comic industry will lose its niche roots and become an industry that all ages and genders can enjoy. All it did was enter in some rather humorous HTML into my profile about what a hot guy “Raul” is. Oh but Raul, you tire so replaceable. Just look over all your sections for g<x>fy HTML that you haven't put in and delete it. This also works for your “home", “browse”, etc. buttons if they do not appear to be working. And it shouldn't take a scholar to realize that "Tom” will not give away a free iPod upon finishing a survey. TTtis is just a faker who wants to spam your emails. On a more serious note, and hopefully much more recognizable note, here tire the most basic safety precautions to take outside of having a tidy Myspace page. Don't fall victim to those cheesy scams asking for your debit/credit card information. That should be a given. What’s even crazier though, is that people not only fall for this, but the whole “chat mom" thing as well. Unless you actually want to meet a pedophile, stay away from general chat rooms. Sites like Paypal and Ebay tire completely different stories, but that will have to be saved till next time. a comic book and its eventual value an added bonus. This is actually why Quest specializes in carrying primarily the trade paperback form of the books rather than the individual back issues, so the reader can experience an entire story arc in one sitting. But whether a fan buys comics for collecting or as reading material with pretty pictures is his or her own business. The important part is that as long as comics are available to their legions of readers we can count on Quest to be there. Wherever there may be.
