And don’t worry about trans fat Aramark, University of West Georgia's dining provider, has switched to anew trans fat-free frying oil. But what exactly is trans fat? Trans fat is made when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil in a process called partial hydrogenation. Partial hydrogenation changes the chemical bond structure of the oil. Day of HOPE. This year, the Day of HOPE will be held on February 13 C4’ 7:30 p.m. during the UWG Men’s Wolves Basketball game versus Western Florida University. The event is hosted by Hope Mentors. Gamma Sigma Sigma will also be helping out with the event and all students are encouraged to come. The HOPE scholars that attend will receive free food,drinks and giveaways. The phenomenon has left scientists baffled, citizens puzzled, and begs the question: is this really possible? This is where the name trans fat emerged —trans means “across” in Latin. Trans fats are found in vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, cookies, candies, and foods fried in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Some trans fats exist naturally in animal products like milk, cheese, butter, beef, anu lamb. According to the Food and Drug Administration, they are a source of energy, they aid in vitamin absorption, and they help the body develop and maintain good health, especially for infants and toddlers. But saturated fats and trans fats are harmful, even when consumed in moderation. With affordably priced food and frequent live bands, it has become a favorite of families and students alike. The Irish Bred Pub first opened for business on May 30. 2006, and is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 am until 2:00 am. Owner Chad Houck credits much of their popularity to their low pricing and great food: “Everyone loves our food, and we offer affordable pricing.” The Pub also hosts a great variety of nightlife activities. On Monday and Thursday nights, “DJ Neil”, a local deejay, entertains upstairs from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am. On Tuesdays, the Pub hosts games of Texas Hold’em upstairs and trivia downstairs beginning at 7:00 pm. On Wednesday nights, Texas Hold’em begins at 8:00 pm and trivia begins at 9:00 pm. All events are free of charge. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Pub hosts either live bands or a deejay. Bands such as Grayson Hill, The Red Tide Saga, and Gareth Asher have all performed at the Irish Bred Pub. The weekend events have a three to five dollar cover charge. With the emergence of other restaurants in downtown Carrollton who also offer nightlife, Houck finds comfort knowing that customers can “bar-hop” and go from place to place. There are many upcoming special events at the Irish Pub. On February 14, there will be a Valentine’s Day dinner special. On February 20, there will be a Mardi Gras celebration, complete with bands and deejays. The Irish Bred Pub also has big plans for St. See Pub page 2 flames. Almost every one of the cases are fatal, save a few. In some of the non fatal cases, the victims had no better explanation for the incident than investigators did. This results in very few spontaneous human combustion cases that can be explained away by skeptics without a closer look. Unfortunately, most of these cases are poorly documented and unconfirmed. In response to this growing concern (up from 21 percent in 2005), Aramark worked with suppliers, dietitians, and chefs to find a healthier frying oil with zero grams of trans fat that still tastes good. The new zero grams trans fat oil —defined by the FDA as 0.5 grams trans fat per serving or less —is now in use at most Aramark-managed locations across the country.
