that people will always
look upon this beautiful
sculpture as a lasting
reminder of a vital ‘town
grown relationship’ that
must always be nurtured,
preserved and celebrated.”
Created and designed
by local artists Helen
Helwig and Machiko
Ichihara, ‘‘Centennial
Tribute”, a concrete and
clay mosaic sculpture, is
mounted on a concrete
pedestal near the new
Campus Center.
“Our desire was to
create a beautiful sculpture
that would enhance the site
and include symbols of the
past, present and future,”
Helwig said.

flame, the architectural
elements of the Campus
Center, and the upward
movement associated
with achievement in the
educational setting helped
the artists in deciding the
sculptural form.
Handmade mosaic
pieces used in the sculpture
include references to the
theme of the centennial.
From Rural Roots to Global
Reach. Also included
were references to the
university’s purpose and
its community connection.
Many historical
elements of the university
were symbolized in
the Centennial Tribute.
Arrowheads and
Mississippian symbols
were used to represent
the west Georgia area at
the turn of the century.
The university’s rural
roots as the Fourth
District Agricultural and
Mechanical School are
reflected with impressions
of cotton flowers, bolls and
leaves, seeds and machine
parts. UWG’s “global
reach” and emphasis on the
importance of technology
is symbolized through the
use of the numerals “0”
and “1”, references to the
binary computer language.
1(X) stars, oak leaves,
acorns, and triangles with
carved words correlating
to the university and its
anniversary represent the
university’s centennial.
The university and
its leaders are thankful
for this sculpture and all
that it symbolizes for
the University of West
Georgia. Dr. Thomas
J. Hynes, UWG acting
president, gratefully
accepted the sculpture.
“This gift symbolizes our
partnership and continuing
relations over the first 1(H)
years of the University
of West Georgia. The
beautiful work of Helen
Helwig and Michiko
Ichihara will serve as a
permanent recognition of
the wonderful relationship
with our community.
Like that relationship,
the art is complex, and
yet tied together with a
special simplicity; the art
is strong enough to resist
the elements, and yet will
require care to preserve its
beauty; it is constructed of
many parts, and yet when
brought together serves a
single purpose.”
