Greek Week spotlights fun, philanthropy

Togas. Cheers. Team
work, blood, sweat and
tears. A millennium ago
the first Greek games were
beginning. Originally a
competition for the favor
of the gods, Greek games
such as the Olympics
are still going on today.
Every spring the Greek
community at West
Georgia has their own
version of competition.
Okay, so replace the javelin
with a raw egg, and the
horse pulled chariot with
one pulled by fraternity
members and, well
you’ve got the gist of it.
Greek Week’s purpose is
to bring fraternities and

working wells are able to
fully supply the university’s
current athletic-field
irrigation needs, however,
with the upcoming campus
expansion, additional wells
will be needed to supply
irrigation needs:
“Surface water can not
sustain all our needs," Kath
said.
Kath recently wrote a
proposal for the Coca-Cola
Foundation, explaining
the methodology of
drilling wells to acquire
groundwater in igneous
and metamorphic rocks.
He proposed that should
Coca-Cola grant them the
funds to do so, he and Dr.
Crawford would firstly
conduct groundwater
exploration and develop
these four wells on UWG’s
new land. Kath claims that
this process would take only
a short amount of time:
“From start to finish,
within thirty to sixty days,
we would know if the wells
were successful or not.”

work. In just 3 hours,
on Monday afternoon,
the Greek population of
West Georgia colleted
over SI,OOO to donate to
charity.
Each chapter was
given the challenge of
raising the most money
they could through penny
wars. There were a few
simple rules; the contest
lasted from 1 to 4 and
pennies good - silver coins
bad. Any silver money,
or dollars put in your jar
would negate the amount
of pennies. Delta Delta

Sigma fraternity won
the penny wars but the

After the completion of
UWG’s new groundwater
additions, the second
phase would be to conduct
the same research and
development on five other
colleges/ universities in
the University System of
Georgia. The University
of Georgia and the Georgia
Institute of Technology
would constitute two of
these universities, and the
remaining three would be
selected according to the
potential to use groundwater
for all irrigation needs.
Dr. Hollabaugh suggests
that if the method works
for these universities, the
entire University System of
Georgia could provide their
own irrigation using this
methodology.
The final phase would
be the transferability of
this methodology to Coca-
Cola areas of interest.
Since Coca-Cola has

Week got to decide what
philanthropy will benefit
from the money.
Greek week consists of
4 days of events, testing
brawns and brains. Monday
night was the academic
game show, Tuesday was
the Toga Tournament,
Wednesday was the cook
out and stroll contest, and
Thursday consisted of
game day and the Greek
god and goddess pageant.
Each day the sororities and
fraternities gain points for
the activities they win, and
the organization with the
most cumulative points
at the end of the week is
crowned the Greek Week
champions. This year’s
Greek Week executive
council added 2 new
exciting events; the Toga
availabilities of water, the
knowledge and resources
relating to the research
and implementation of
this method of tapping
into unused water supplies
could be beneficial to the
company on a global scale.
If the Coca-Cola
Foundation does agree
to this proposal, many
positive outcomes could
be expected. This plan
conserves the treated
drinking water supply and
would be a large saving to
taxpayers and companies.
Properly managed wells
can possibly yield water
continuously for decades,
and irrigation with
groundwater is draught
proof, allowing towns and
colleges to irrigate during
water bans. This method
can also be applied to most
areas in the Piedmont/ Blue
Ridge of Georgia.
The UWG Grounds
Department is also working
to conserve water. New
landscape installations and
Tournament, and the stroll
contest.
On Tuesday evening each
sorority and fraternity
chose 5 members, dressed
in matching togas to
represent them in a series
of relay games, a.k.a. the
Toga Tournament. Phi
Mu won best togas with
a Wizard of Oz themed
team and Delta Chi won
for the men, sporting oh
so-fashionable blue plaid
togas. The games consisted
of over under, a raw egg
toss, and a water balloon
pass. The most amusing
sight was watching
bewildered onlookers
as they passed the water
fountain wondering what
in the world was going on.
It’s not every day you see
a line of fraternity guys
seasonal color beds are
maintained using water
from the currently existing
wells on campus as a
supplemental to rainfall.
However, according to
Grounds Superintendent
James Hembree. the
university aims to use plants
who can survive without
constant maintenance:
“We try to use native
plants in our landscapes
that are adaptable to short
term, and in most cases, long
term drought conditions.”
They also monitor new
landscapes closely during
the first year, so that in
subsequent years, they are
able to let the plants “fend
for themselves.”

Earth Day on Tuesday. April

many sponsors, clubs and
community organizations
will be on hand to educate

The most successful event
of the week was the stroll
contest that was held on
Wednesday night. Each
fraternity and sorority was
paired with a National
Pan-Hellenic organization,
(traditionally African
American fraternity/
sorority) and told to make
up a stroll routine for the
contest. The Campus
Center was packed full of
organizations anxiously
awaiting the performance
of their team. After the

Massacre from page 1
last week as two bomb threats were called in to the
University Police, leading to speculation that the
incident was not a crime of passion, but a planned
and organized massacre. News reports have already
begun calling the situation a “college Columbine”,
a statement that could lead to dangerous copycat
incidents as the belief that infamy could be obtained
by such an action.
UWG Police Chief Tom Mackel said that an
emergency safety plan is always in place and that local
first responder resources such as law enforcement
agencies and the Carroll County Emergency
Management System are available as backup.
“We have 21 certified police officers and operate
24/7,” said Mackel. “The officers attempt to be visible
and can respond quickly throughout campus. Many
of our buildings are on access control and we provide
training for our officers for this type of event.
“We provide training for our officers on campus
shooting events,” said Mackel. “Two of the ranking
officers who responded to the shooting at the
University of Arizona were brought to campus
to conduct a training class for officers who could
confront an active shooter in a building. This training
is repeated as new officers join the force.
“We also conduct workplace violence training and
through these classes, staff learn to deal with hostile
people, recognize different behaviors and how to
create exit plans,” Mackel stated.
We at The West Georgian wish to express our
deepest sympathy to our colleagues at The Collegiate
Newspaper of Virginia Tech.
