Apparently, the university has received funding for new buildings and is waiting for construction to begin on the designated sites. The construction of the Health and Wellness Center, along with the 7,000 seat arena will begin this semester and students are expected to take note of the parking changes that may make parking easier. It was an opportunity for proteges and mentors to meet and greet, get to know each other, and ask those burning “beginning of-the-year” questions that every freshman has. Horns up! This will result in the closure of the public safety lots beginning early September. To recover from this significant loss, the department has two new regulations that may accommodate for those parking spaces. First, graduate assistants will be utilizing the parking spaces in the Townsend Center faculty lots. This will allow commuter students to park where the graduate assistants used to park. A temporary lot on the old Brookwood property has been recreated into an additional parking lot for commuter students. There was music, games, and that little thing that makes every college student’s heart jump with glee: free food. Not to mention an impressive Power Point presentation by Ms. Lewis of the EXCEL Center. designed to introduce each mentor. The Mentor Program is a type of big brother/ big sister organization in which upperclassmen students at UWG guide first-year students and HOPE students alike. gave a show for family and friends. Audience members enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers as they watched the band perform its pre-game show, including the fight song, the West Georgia Alma Mater, and the Star Spangled Banner. The band also played its opening tune for the half-time show an arrangement of “Smokin” by 8()’s rock band Boston. Of course, that is but To end the night with a bang, the band preformed a traditional dance tune, “Long Train Runnin’,” which is full of punchy horn riffs. During the drum cadence in the middle of the tune, the entire band put down their instruments and broke out into a synchronized dance. “This is what makes us stand out from the crowd,” Dr. Doug Overmier, director of bands said. Parking has been a one of the many programs and opportunities that the EXCEL Center has to offer The other benefits include acad e m i c advising for students with undec id e and majo r s , DISCOVER, a program to explore career opportunities, free tutoring in all core curriculum courses, The heat was a struggle for everyone during band camp, with the hear index jumping into the 110s for most of the week. One student had to go to the hospital from heat exhaustion. “Being out in the heat was actually a double edged sword,” Benjamin Harris, a trombone player, said. “It was so hot on the field that thinking and acting on commands at the same time was near major concern for West Georgia students for many semesters now. Fortunately, public safety lias suggestions that may make it easier for students to park and arrive promptly to their desired destinations. The apartment shuttle, which circulates every half hour, provides transportation to those students who live in the surrounding student apartments. Along with this service, students are encouraged to utilize the school shuttle bus to avoid the consumption of gas trying to find a parking stop. Public Safety also insists that if students study skills assistance, the Multicultural Achievement Program teaching cultural awareness and offering mentoring to minority students, and the UWGEEK Squad, which assists students with navigating their new UWG accounts and Internet. The EXCEL Center is a vital and important resource that all students, not just first-years and HOPE scholars, are encouraged to participate impossible. Another suggestion for students is to car pool whenever possible. Carpooling reduces traffic, and it cuts daily commuting costs. Hopefully these suggestions and services will provide a smooth route for those students w ho commute to campus on a daily basis. The new additions to the campus are very beneficial for students but the construction of these sites will have an impact on parking for the next 12 to 24 months. As for numbers, the band is about the same size it was last fall with 150 members. However, this year the band is dominated by rookies. “It is a young group, but they have plenty to offer to the future of this band program,” said Chris Sink, drum major. “We had the smoothest band camp to date.”
