How I spent my
summer vacation
Welcome back good
reader! We all know the
title of this essay from
our long past grammar
school days, but 1 figured
it would make a nice
transition anyway. As
my returning friends
already know, 1 am a
non-traditional student
- non-trad, or “Old Fart”
for short. I am about
"Is it hot enough for you yet?"

temperatures
being near,
at, and above
record highs,
not even I
could make
a joke about
how it’s hot
as Hades
out there.
Of course,
as a select
few students
optimistically
point out,
it could
be hotter.
The highest
recorded
temperature in
Carrollton was
103 degrees
in 1980, while
the average
high for the
month of
August is 88 degrees.
This year, however,
on August 15, the highs
were at a blistering
99 degrees, minus the
extra heat and humidity
our wonderful Georgia
weather provides, which
equals the record high
for that day from 1954.
So how are the
students dealing with
these record highs?
Confining themselves
to their delightfully air
conditioned rooms, of
course!

been going outside,”

midway through my
third year here at UWG
and like others in my
situation; I took a couple
of courses over the
summer. No frolicking
around the islands for
me. 1 did however, have
a grand adventure. Take a
seat, have a cold glass of
lemonade and lets chat a
while.
Well, as many of you
may recall, 1 have two
wonderful children ages
8 and 16. I also have a
big heart. That is where
our journey begins. Let’s
wander back to 1965,
Brown Hieh School in
roommate Colin Holmes
agrees: “I don't go out
unless is absolutely
necessary, and even
then only really early or
really late.”
Their solutions
for dealing with the
heat are just as varied
as their attempts at
avoiding it. While Colin
says that he prefers to
keep the fan on full
blast, Blaine jokingly
says that he turns up
his air conditioning to
try to counteract global
warming. Well, just in
case the "global cooling”
method doesn’t work in
the long run, the Centers
for Disease Control has
some suggestions:
“Wearing
lightweight clothing and
drinking enough water
are two easy things you
can do. Try to drink 5
to 7 ounces every 15-
20 minutes, especially
if you’re working
outside. Being outside
Atlanta is still being
desegregated, JFK, RFK
and MLK are still hot
topics, soon to all enter
immortal status, and my
parents were high school
juniors. Bill Phillips
and Patricia Ray met
that summer and began
double dating with Gary
Goodwin and Susan
Nelson. Each couple
married and eventually
went their separate ways,
but the friendship that
formed those last two
years of high school
would prove fateful. Fast
forward to 1976, when
my parents Bill and Pat,
had married and had a
wonderful son -and then
my brother. They split up
as often happens and my
mother took my brother
and myself. 1 made
friends in 2nd grade with
Todd Goodwin, whose
also means you need
to protect your skin
from the sun. Everyone
should remember to
put on sunscreen and
reapply every few hours.
Tight knit clothing and
hats also help with sun
protection.”
Of course, just
dealing with the heat
doesn’t
always work.
There is the
constant risk
of heat stroke
and heat
exhaustion,
t h e
prevention
for which
the CDC
also suggests
taking a
cold bath
or shower
when air
conditioning
is
insufficient;
never staying
in a closed,
parked
vehicle;
limiting
outdoor
activity;
resting in shady areas;
and limiting exercise.
In short, readers,
take necessary
precautions and don’t
assume you aren’t at risk.
Prevent heat sickness
and cope with the
extreme temperatures
by wearing light, loose
fitting clothing and hats,
drinking lots of water,
and staying in the shade
and air-conditioning as
much as possible. So
how hot is it? It’s so hot
that our best parking
spaces are no longer
determined by distance,
but by shade. Welcome
back UWG!
Opinion
mother was - you guessed
it - Susan Goodwin. Well
of course the mom’s
were ecstatic and the two
families became close as
families ourselves. Susan
and Gary Goodwin had 3
children, Todd, Jack and
Nikki. As we all grew,
we did w hat teens do, and
Nikki went a little farther
than she should have,
becoming pregnant at 15.
By this point I was 21
and married, expecting
my daughter. Nikki gave
birth to Danielle 11 days
before the arrival of my
daughter Krystyna. The
girls grew up as sisters,
but sadly Danielle
followed her mother’s
path and became pregnant
at 13.
Here is where we
meet the present. Danielle
married the baby’s father

the right thing and be a
rebellious teen. Of course
that was a bad idea. They
lasted just over a year,
bouncing from place to
place and both leaving
school. Eventually they
ended up separated and
Nikki needing a break.
Rather than have them be
in an unhappy situation,
or worse, 1 moved them
in with me. That’s when
I became “Poppa”. 1 was
an instant Grandpa, and
let me tell you, I loved it.
Annie is adorable and the
light of my life. I helped
get the baby stable,
convinced Danielle to
have an amicable split
with the baby’s father
and go back to school.
We spent the summer
spoiling Annie rotten,
and me beaming like a
lighthouse bulb as I went
about town with my new

angel girl.
Finally school time
approached again, and
I was not able to get
Danielle into the same
school as Krystyna - who
has a waiver to attend
outside our district.
With everyone having
had the summer to cool
off so to speak, and get
their thoughts together,
it came time for Annie
and Danielle to go home.
I never showed it, but
it broke my heart to let
them go. Of course I still
keep in touch and still see
my angel girl as much as
1 can, but I will never
forget my first summer
as Poppa.

family, all names have

privacy.
