The Lions pounded the Wolves by a final score of 65-17. After a few missed opportunities from both teams, the Lions started scoring after recovering a fumble by the Wolves. The score at halftime was 23-10, but the Lions dominated the second half with an astounding 42 points. West Georgia’s By Steven A. Gilley Sports Editor Stevengilleyls@aol.com On any given Tuesday or Friday night at the El PE Building, you may have witnessed the volleyball teamdominatingopponents while making UWG history with their impressive 17- match winning streak. For more than half of the winning streak, a new face stood on the sidelines, barking orders to the players and leading the team after former head coach Regan Adams stepped down early in the season. No one knew what to expect of the coaching change, but Assistant Coach Carla Silveira never doubted her ability to lead the Wolves. defense could not contain North Alabama's offense, as they successfully scored on six of eight drives in the second half. The Wolves would score one more time in the game, but 37-17 was as close as the Wolves would get. Senior quarterback Ryan P(x>le threw for 170 yards and one interception, while receivers Daniel Johnson and James Crowley combined for 107 yards. Kicker Jared Sports On the forefront of the historic 17-match winning streak, Carla Silveira took over as the interim head coach early in the season, and she has led the Wolves to the Gulf South Conference Tournament as a fourth seed. Despite West Georgia’s ranking, coach Silveira remains confident and refuses to listen to the critics. She believes her team has enough talent to compete and win during the tournament. "I think our team is good enough to be first and sometimes we just go through ups and downs during the season,” Silveira said. “I am try ing to get our team to remain consistent, but I believe we can go to the tournament and win the UWG Wolves football Guberman went 2- for-2 and successfully completed a 41-yard field goal attempt. The team has a short w eek of preparation before traveling to South Georgia for the final game of the 2007 season. West Georgia falls to 2-X overall and 1-6 in the GSC. They will face Valdosta State tomorrow during the GSC Game of the Week at X p.m. The game will be televised on CSS. Most importantly, she emphasizes having fun during matches, because it alleviates the pressure on players during the game. “We had a bad stretch during the season and started to lose games as a result,” volleyball player Andressa Martins said. “We were stressed and it affected our play, but during practice she (Coach Silveira] got on the court w ith us and told us to just have fun.” Coach Silveira is a native of Brazil, and she fell in love with volleyball at an early age. In her senior year, she led the nation in triple doubles (assists, digs and kills), earning her First Team All-GSC accolades and Daktronics Second Team All-South Region. Leading on and off the court, she was also named to the Fall Academic All-Conference team and was a finalist for the Commissioner’s Trophy, one of the most prestigious awards given by the Gulf South Conference. With the regular season ending last week, the Wolves finished the season at 24-11 overall and 6-6 in the GSC. They w ill travel to Searcy, Ark. to face the host and number one seeded Harding at the GSC tournament.
