An Open Letter From The President Of Atlanta University Center Young Democrats kenneth newby special to the maroon Monday, November 4, 1996 has been declared "Come Alive Monday" on His torically Black College and University campuses across the country We challenge all fellow AUC students to "Come Alive November 5, roll to the polls!" We are disturbed at reports that there are candidates across the country who are depending on a low turnout of Afri can-American voters. We must disap point them. We are asking you to ob serve Monday November 4, 1996 as "COME ALIVE MONDAY" and devote the day to canvassing the campus and encouraging fellow students to meet their civic obligations on Tuesday No vember 5,1996. Students were very much a part of the civil rights movement in the 1960's. No right that we won was more important than the right to vote. As students, we must encourage that this right is put to good use on Tuesday, November 5,1996. There is much at stake for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and much to lose. Viscious attacks on affir mative action, reprehensible welfare re form measures, continued and even in creased corporate welfare, and cuts in student aid are just a few issues that should be of concern. The Higher Edu cation Act begins its reauthorization process in 1997. This act is responsible for a lot of the financial assistance HBCU's receive. We must send a state ment that we are watching those who would represent us on these issues. Our goal in the Atlanta University Center is to organize the largest "Get Out the Vote" campaign since the civil rights movement. From our campus "Come Alive Monday" we will urge everyone to vote on Tuesday, Novem ber 5,1996. We encourage you to speak to the im portance of voting and do the follow ing: -Remind 5 friends to vote on Tuesday, November 5, 1996. -Volunteer to take them to the polls. -Pass out literature encouraging fel low students to vote. As students we can help turn this country around. Our goal in the Atlanta University Center is to organize the largest "Get Out the Vote" campaign since the civil rights movement.
