The Maroon Page 3 Monday, November 4, 11996' While the ultimate purpose of The Maroon is to promote self-sufficiency in our community, we understand that this sense of independence extends far past building businesses and developing art istry. Self-sufficiency in African America demands that we turn to each other for assistance both on a practical and ideo logical basis. With that in mind, we present a special Election Day edition of The Maroon ; a journalistic examination of the ramifications of local and national politics on the Black community. Political analysis is generally con trolled by the radio, television, and print media, all of whom are owned by folks who could use a little time in the mela nin chamber. As a result of this unfortu nate situation, any analysis that you as a media consumer receive is generally provided by some old-as-hell white dude that doesn't know jack about you or your situation. Cutting Medicare to buy weapons makes perfect sense to your average politician; his benefits come as part of the deal so he won't ever have to worry about hospital bills. I'm tryin to find out who, if anyone, is gonna be lookin' out for my grandmother. I'd like to know the kind of stuff that David Brinkley doesn't include on his list of priorities. For this issue, we have attempted to provide some analysis that, in manner and content might be a little more rel- evant to young Black people. In addi tion to analysis, we have provided edi torials, essays (including guest pieces by Prof. Larry Crawford and Dr. Abraham Davis.) and the creative pieces which prayerfully will become a stylistic trade mark of The Maroon Tiger staff. None of the authors are "professional political analysts," we're just brothers who can provide perspective, and a decent level of intelligent commentary on subjects which effect us all. I would strongly ad vise that you absorb at least SOME ma terial from this perspective. While we are admittedly rather liberal in tone and presentation, we are certainly no more liberal than the mass media is conser vative. The bottom line on the national races is that there are about three major issues which Democrats and Republicans dis agree upon, but the line which separates them is becoming increasingly distorted. Very soon, you will not be able to tell one party from the other: Just a mass of white folks with a few sprinkles of artifical pepper, all serving the same agenda. Until that day, The Maroon will continue to offer opinions and reports on the political scene. Please don't think for a second that we've attacked this topic to advance the private agendas of any individual poli ticians. Positive reviews do not neces sarily mean that as a journalistic body Photo by Khari Shiver we completely endorse any given can didate or statute. I'm not really fond of politicians as a whole. A snake by any other name slithers just as slickly. Like wise, a politician, elephant or ass, BY DEFINITION, has mastered the art of deception and has proven to be no friend of the truth. Read on and draw your own conclusions, but understand that in absorbing political analysis by black men, written for the specific pur pose of educating the black community, you are striking a political blow.
