7 ns INSIDE MOREHOUSE, MARCH/APRIL 2012 BASKETBALL Morehouse Intramural Team Finishes No. 2 in Georgia T he Morehouse College Intramural Travel basketball team is the sec ond best intramural team in Georgia. They narrowly missed becoming the top team after losing 51-47 to the University of West Georgia in the title game of the 2012 Georgia Collegiate Basketball Championship at Georgia Institute of Technology, February 3-5. The intramural Maroon Tigers finished with a 4-1 record for the weekend, defeating two teams from Georgia Tech, and teams from the University of Georgia and Georgia College and State University. Junior Laron Rodgers and senior Josiah Anabraba were named to the All- Tournament team. Maroon Tigers Fall to Paine In SIAC Tourney THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE basketball team fought to the final minute, but fell to Paine College 63-60 in the first round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, ending the 2011-2012 season. The Maroon Tigers had a chance to win a thrill ing game with four seconds left and only behind by one point at 61 -60. But they turned the ball over and Paine converted two free throws for the final score. Staff and Faculty Basketball Team Victorious Over Students DESPITE THE ENERGY of youth being against them, a team of staff and faculty members overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat a student squad 55-52 in the annual Morehouse Staff/Faculty vs. Students basketball game in Forbes Arena on March 19. Coached by associate dean of Student Life Kevin Booker and facility manager Gerard Ladson, the Staff/Faculty team was led in scoring by assistant basketball coach Dominique Ingram, who had 17 points, and Jason Reese ‘09, educational specialist for the Morehouse College Educational Talent Search Program, who had 15 points. ■ TENNIS Alexander Serves Up?. Free Tennis Lessons**** Tennis coach Terry Alexander has announced the start of tennis lessons and drills on the Morehouse College tennis courts. Sessions are being held Tuesdays and Thurs days, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. In May, sessions will be held four times a week. The sessions contain a cardio work-out compo nent, as well as a tennis lesson component. “Start stretching, start walking or jogging and start now ...work your way Into the heat by starting now, even if you only come to one ses sion a week,” suggests Alexander. “That will help your body and mind adjust and prepare for the hot summer days that are just around the corner.” Participants are asked to wear athletic or exer cise attire and tennis or cross-trainer shoes. Also, bring your own non-alcoholic beverage, a towel (mostly used for crying in) and a tennis racket if you have it. If not, there will be rackets available for use while you are in the sessions. Please make sure that you have been cleared with your physician to participate. ■ TRACK AND FIELD Walls Named SIAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week COURTLAND WALLS started off the 2012 track and field season by being named one of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week twice in March. Walls, a junior from Alpharetta, Ga., ran an NCAA provisional time of 21.23 in the 200 meters in the University of North Florida Spring Break Open, finishing third overall and first among college athletes. He also ran a time of 10.74 in the 100 meters, finishing sixth. Walls also ran a leg on the Flying Maroon Tigers’ 4x100 meter relay team. ■ READY, SET, RUN! Morehouse Peachtree Road Race Group Seeks Members THE 2012 PEACHTREE ROAD RACE is around the corner. Curtis Augustin, application administrator in the Office of Information Technology, is interested in forming a Morehouse Peachtree Road Race Runners Group.
