Lawrence Blumer, professor of
biology, and his students were fea
tured in the Atlanta Community Food
Bank's summer 2012 newsletter
“FoodSharing." They were featured in
a volunteer section story about Blumer’s
tradition of taking students to the annual
Hunger Walk/ Run where they volunteer
to cheer on runners.
Julius Coles '64 director of the Office
of Global Education and the Andrew
Young Center for International Affairs,
was the spring commencement
speaker for the University of Rndlay
(Ohio) on May 5. Coles received an
honorary doctorate of International
Affairs from Rndlay. Coles also was
selected as a visiting Woodrow Wilson
Fellow at Grinnell College from April
9-12. There, he lectured to classes
and gave a convocation address on the
prospects for Africa in the 21 st century.
Stephane Dunn, co-director of the
Cinema, Television and Emerging
Media Studies Program, was awarded
a summer 2012 fellowship for the
Future of Minority Studies (FMS)
Summer Seminar. The FMS project
facilitates focused and productive
national discussions about disciplines
on the democratizing role of minority
identity and participation in a multicul
tural society.
Giles King Eady ’07. director of Project
Identity and coordinator of Special
Admission Projects, was interviewed on
Nassau, Bahamas-based Guardian Talk
Radio.com’s show "Things That Matter,”
on April 19. Eady talked about Project
Identity. Eady received his master's
degree in public administration on May
11 from the University of Georgia.
Lisa Gunter, adminstrative assistant
in the Office of Health Professions,
received her master's in business
administration from Strayer University on
May 12. Gunter, whose concentration
was in human resource management,
completed the program with a 4.0
grade point average.
Valerie Mattel, associate profes
sor of biology and director of
the Neuroscience Program, won
the Student National Medical
Association’s Excellence in Pre-
Medical Education Award for Diversity
in Medicine during the Medical
Education Conference on April 5.
Leonard L. Home, a junior inter
national studies and Spanish major,
is one of 75 undergraduate and
graduate students from across the
country selected as a 2012-13
Presidential Fellow for the Center
for the Study of the Presidency and
Congress. Fellows will spend the
year studying the U.S. presidency,
the public policymaking process
and the Chief Executive's relations
with Congress, allies, the media
and the American public.
Melvinia Turner King interim
director of the Leadership Center
at Morehouse College, has been
appointed a scholar in the Kettering
Founding Public Scholars, class
of 2012-2014. King also was the
keynote speaker at the 10th Annual
James E. Scott Black Student
Leadership Conference at the
University of Florida on Feb. 4; and
gave the presentation “Challenging
the Status Quo - A Leadership
Approach for Ethical Dilemmas”
at the International Academy of
Business and Public Administration
Disciplines Conference in Dallas on
April 19-22.
Munichia McCalla, assis
tant to the program man
ager of the Ronald E. McNair
Post Baccalaureate Achievement
Program, was granted a master of
science degree in counseling from
Capella University on March 24.
McCalla finished the program with
a 3.9 grade point average.
Laura Seay, assistant professor of
political science, is the new editor
of 4S4 News, the newsletter for the
African Studies Association.
Gwen Wade, director of International
Student Services and Study Abroad
Programs, has been selected for the
2012 Boren Scholarship Nominating
Panel. Boren Scholarships, which
are funded by the U.S. Defense
Department’s National Security
Exchange Program, offer students
opportunities to study in world
regions critical to U.S. interests
but are underrepresented in study
abroad programs.
Zollie White, a junior chemistry
and mathematics major from
Tallahassee, Fla., is a 2012-2013
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
winner. Goldwater Scholars were
selected from a field of 1,123 math
ematics, science and engineering
students nominated by faculty mem
bers from colleges and universities
across the country.
Henrietta Yang, directorofthe
Chinese Studies Program, participated
in a panel discussion about U.S.-
China educational exchange during
the 4th Annual U.S.-China Strategic
and Economic Dialogues on May
3 in Beijing, China. The event was
co-hosted by China State Councilor
Liu Yandong and U.S. Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton. Yang was invited
by the U.S. State Department to talk
about how Morehouse has benefited
from the 100,000 Strong Initiative.
English Professors Write
Book About Obama
Melvin Ftahming’s book, Critical Essays on Barack Obama: Reaffirming
the Hope, Re-Vitalizing the Dream, was published by Cambridge Scholars
Publishing. It features essays written by six Morehouse English faculty mem
