King Collection Wins
Georgia Society of Archivists
President’s Award
Andrew J. Douglas, assistant
professor of political science, won a
share of the Contemporary Political
Theory Journal's award for best article
published in 2011 for his piece,
“In a Milieu of Scarcity: Sartre and
the Umils of Political Imagination."
Douglas, who won a cash prize of
£500, wrote the article as part of a
book, In the Spirit of Critique: Thinking
Politically in the Dialectical Tradition.
Julius Coles ‘64, director of the
Leadership Center of Morehouse
College and the Andrew Young
Center for Global Education, served
as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting
Fellow at the University of LaVeme
in LaVeme, Calif., Sept. 17-20.
Coles lectured on international rela
tions and African issues.
Keith Hollingsworth, chair of
the Department of Business
Administration, had his paper,
“Examining Frank Adair Jr., as an
African American CPA Pioneer: A
Historical Note” published in the
November issue of the Accounting
Historians Journal. Adair was the first
Morehouse graduate to earn a CPA,
the sixth African American nationally.
Leslie John-Pierre, Peace Corp
Recruiter for the Andrew Young
Center for Global Leadership, is one
of nine recipients of the Peace Corps
2012 Franklin H. Williams Award for
outstanding community service. The
award honors ethnically diverse vol
unteers who exemplify a commitment
to community service and the Peace
Corps' goal of promoting a better
understanding of other people on the
part of Americans.

Nathan Nobis, assistant professor
of philosophy, was recently certi
fied in logic-based theory by the
American Society for Philosophy,
Counseling and Psychotherapy, the
primary scholarly and professional
society for philosophical counselors.
Laura Seay, assistant professor of
political science, was a panelist on
the Presidential Debate Truth Test
Watch Group on Atlanta's WXIA-TV
on Oct. 22. The group of political
experts fact checked President
Barack Obama and Massachusetts
Gov. Mitt Romney during their Oct.
22nd debate.
Melvinia Turner-King, associ
ate professor and director of the
Leadership Studies Program,
received a research paper award
for her paper, “The Problem Behind
the Problem: Creating Economic
Well-Being for Young Men of
Color,” and a second award for col
laborative interdisciplinary research
paper for “Deliberation as a Tool to
Influence and Develop Citizenship
Within Students Across Disciplines"
from the International Academy of
Business and Public Administration
Disciplines.
David Wall Rice ‘95 associate
professor of psychology, gave the
keynote address during a celebra
tion dinner for the MANdatory
program at Dickinson College on
Nov. 17. MANdatory is a six-week
academic and leadership enrich
ment program for men of color at
Dickinson.

Luther King Jr. Collection was awarded the 2012 President’s
Award by the Georgia Society of Archivists. The award is pre
sented each year to an
individual or organiza
tion that has made signif
icant contributions to the
archiving profession.
“The Office of the Morehouse College Martin Luther
King Jr. Collection was nominated based on the efforts of
you and your staff to create campus-based programming and
community support initiatives that highlight the teachings
and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and support
the Collection,” said GSA President Marie Force in a letter
to Vicki Crawford, executive director of the Office of the
King Collection.
“I am very pleased to recognize your office’s outstand
ing contributions to Georgia’s documentary heritage and to
the archival profession,” Force said.
Crawford received the award on Nov. 8 in St Simons Island,
Ga., during the Georgia Society of Archivists’ annual meeting. B
