CREWS opened his first
retail outlet - The House of
Paper Mache, a card and gift
shop - in East Orange, N.J.,
in 1969. Sleeping on a cot
in the back of the store to
make ends meet, Crews saw
business expand, opening
a larger store in downtown
Newark. That led to an airport official asking lum if
he’d be willing to open a store in the Newark Airport.
He eventually converted his card shop into an airport
bookstore business that flourished not only in Newark,
but airports across the country. Crews was one of the
first airport concessionaires to mix retail and food busi
nesses. He sold that business, and now runs Airport
Retail Management, wliich has 14 outlets at Hartsfield-
Jackson Atlanta International Airport and is opening
shops in airports in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
