Best Wishes To The Southern Cross From Nativity Church Thunderbolt GREETINGS FROM ALL AT Saint Michael’s Savannah Beach Franciscan Sisters Parish Council Of Catholic Women Home & School Association Greetings And Missionary Priest Lost In Plane Flight MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Fa ther Philip Carrigan, S.M.A. of the Society of African Missions was lost off the coast of West Africa, in a mission plane, early this month. Reports from Mission Headquarters at Mon rovia, Liberia indicate that Fa ther Carrigan left Monrovia, Dec. 3, on a routine flight to his Mission at Sasstown. The flight would normally carry him about a mile off the Christmas Luncheon At Augusta AUGUSTA - St. Mary’s Pa rish Council held their monthly meeting in St. Ann’s Hall. Fol lowing the meeting a covered dish luncheon was enjoyed by the members and their guests. Mrs. Vola Jacobs, Mrs. Ber tha Battey, and Mrs. Joey Law rence entertained with a beau tiful selection of Christmas mu sic. Mrs. John Radeck, president, presided at the business meet ing and announced that Miss Anna Rice had been allocated funds to buy a birthday gift for a fifteen year old girl at St. Mary’s Home in Savannah. Mrs. A. C. Bledsoe, visita tion chairman, is receiving ar rangements and gifts from members to be carried to the elderly and shut-ins of the pa rish, during the Christmas sea son. the coast, over the ocean, and last only a short time. How ever, no word has been heard from him since that date. An intensive search has been made over the area but no trace of the plane has been found. Father Carrigan obtained his pilot’s license in Liberia a few years ago and since has been a mis sion pilot in that territory. A veteran of World War II, Father Carrigan served three years in the South Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Carrigan of Brighton, Mass, and received his educa tion in Boston College before entering the Society of African Missions. He completed his theological studies at Catholic University of America and was ordained at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D. C. in 1955. At that time he was assigned to his mission in Li beria, West Africa. The Society of African Mis sions (S.M.A. Fathers) is an international organization of Missionary Priests who have been working on the coast of West Africa for over a hundred years. The American Province of the Society staff the Vicari ate of Cape Palmas, Liberia. The S.M.A. Fathers have been working among the Negroes in Georgia for the past fifty years. At present they are located in Augusta at Immaculate Concep tion Church, in Savannah at St. Benedict’s, St. Mary’s and St. Anthony’s, in Macon at St. Peter Claver and in Atlanta at Our Lady of Lourdes. McDonough, Bishop of Savannah ordained three Benedictines December 18th in the abbey church of Florida's Benedictine Abbey. Frater Martin Guiteras and Frater Joseph Houbrick were ordained deacons and Frater Paul Romfh was ordained subdeacon. Rev. Oscar Burnett, O.S.B. Ordained By Bishop Reh Rev. Oscar Burnett, O.S.B. SAVANNAH - The Rev. Os car Burnett, O.S.B., was or dained to the Priesthood on December 22nd at Belmont Ab bey Cathedral, Belmont, N. C., at the hands of the Most Reve rend Francis J. Reh, D.D.,- LL.D., Bishop of Charleston, S. C. He offered his first Solemn Mass on Christmas Day at 10:00 A.M., in Sacred Heart Church, here. Father Oscar is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar C. Bur nett. Sr., of Savannah. His bro thers are Alexander A. Burnett, Richmond, Va., and Mortimer P. Burnett, Savannah. His sis ters are Miss Margaret Bur nett and Mrs. Mary Agnes Schwalb, both of Savannah. Born September 17, 1926, Father Oscar grew up in Sa vannah, attended the parish school and Benedictine Military School. Air Corps service for two years followed. As a vet eran he belonged to George K. Gannam Post #184, Higher education was pursued at Armstrong College and the Off-Campus Divison of Georgia University at Savannah. He gra duated from Emory Univer sity’ s Lamar School of Law with the LL.B. degree. He belonged to the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity and was president of the Gamma Chapter of Chi Phi Fraternity. Before entering into the pra- tice of law, Father Oscar was associated with Crawford and Co., Insurance Adjusters, At lanta. In 1951 he opened his own office in Savannah, continu ing practice until the time of his entry -into the religious life as a Benedictine monk. Dur ing this time he belonged to the American, Georgia, and Sa vannah Bar Associations, held presidency of Benedictine Ath letic Association for two terms, and was an officer of Savannah Council #631, Knights of Colum bus. During his theological pre paration Father Oscar taught a course of Advanced Business Law in Belmont Abbey College. Congratulations And Best Wishes From Social Club Presents Check To Pastor ALBANY - The social club of St. Clare’s parish presented the pastor with $69.25, the re sult of their Baby Contest which closed last Sunday. The winner of the contest was Miss Deitre Laverne Mor ris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Morris. The second prize went to Miss Rosalyn Christian, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Christian. Mrs. Morris and Christian very generously donated their prize money back to the church. The proceeds will go toward ob taining drapery for the parish hall.
