f Peace Is Desire Of Soviet Man In Street DUBUQUE, Iowa, (NC) — More than anything else the Russian man in the street wants peace, according to a nun who spent 30 days there last summer. Sister Mary Consolata, a fa culty member at Clarke College here, said that wherever she went in the Soviet Union, a fre quent question of Soviet citi zens was: “You do not want war do you? Your country will not bring us into war?” One major value of visits by Americans to Russia, she believes, is that they give op portunities for Americans to assure Soviet citizens that they share their desire for peace. A doctoral student in the de partment of Slavic languages at Harvard University, Sister Mary Consolata went to Rus sia last summer on a study grant from a foundation. Her trip included visits to several of the Soviet “repub lics- ” Russia, Uxbek, Geor gia, Ukrania, and the Crimea —and such cities as Moscow, Leningrad, Tbilisi, Lvov, Sev astopol and Bukhara. In several cities she found COLLEGE (Continued from Page 1) with it the constantly increasing complexity of specialization," he said. “The approach made by the academic world in this factual situation can be dangerous or not, according to the manner in which the academician him self approaches his own field of knowledge. “If he approaches his spe cific quest for truth withregid- ity absolutism, then he impresses upon his audience a distortion both of truth and of the quest for truth.” On the other hand, if the scholar approaches his quest with the conscious idea that his specific presentation of the truth is not, and cannot be all truth, but is rather a part of it, he contributes immeasura bly to the enrichment of know ledge itself, as well as to his own field, Father Reinert said. “Science alone, history alone, economics alone, theo logy alone, cannot contain all truth, nor do they in themselves offer all solutions to the pro blems of men,” he said. “Christianity provides the integrating force for all of man’s knowledge. . .Man’s life can be integrated on a truly human level only if he personally commits himself to a personal and providential God. “This unifying concept is the most significant Judaeo-Chris- tial contribution to Western ci vilization.” Father Reinert advocated an equal freedom of religion and of science. He noted that the ob jective of the Christian human istic approach to truth was the synthesis of complete human development. “This is an objective which any other approach seems most unlikely to achieve,” he said. KHRUSHCHEV (Continued from Page 1) want to starve, you have to eat flour at every meal and many sweets. “Many times we get bored with the same food, but still have to eat it or give up our tickets. No other choice. After you finish the noodles in all sizes and shapes, you have to start all over again. “It has been a month since we saw the last eggs and we still don’t know when we’ll see the next ones,” she wrote. But despite these mistreat ments and deprivations, the for mer teacher wrote that “we do not give so much importance to these earthly things. . .we keep on with all our good hope in the Child Jesus and His love for us, as well as our love for Him.” She added: “We are peaceful because we know that at the end, no matter the time it takes, the lives it costs or the suf ferings of how many innocent people, 'the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it’ (the church) and that is what counts.” Russian Orthodox churches open for worship and attended by young people as well as the middle-aged and older. Sister Mary Consolata said there were signs of neither great enthusiasm nor marked resentment toward the status quo of their society among most Soviet citizens. However, she added, their increasing aware ness that U. S. standards of liv ing far surpass their own makes them impatient for more and better material goods. REST IN- (Continued from Page 1) (Grunitsky, while a brother- in-law of President Olympio, was his political foe. He had served as Premier of this for mer French colony from 1956- to 1958, when he was defeated by Olympio. He went into exile in Dahomey, asserting he would not return to Togo while Olympio was in power. (On Olympio’s assassination --which took place in front of the United States Embassy in Lome—Grunitsky returned to become Premier. He also assumed the posts of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Interior.) In order to furnish every member of St. Joseph’s parish, Dubuque, Iowa, with holy water, the men of the parish “packaged” eight ounces in polyethylene bags and distributed the bags during Sunday Masses. The priests of the parish blessed 75 gallons of water. Shown sealing the bags are, from the left, Joseph P. Kane, Thomas P. Konzen, and James Heller. They were able to prepare about 500 bags per hour. (NC Photos) MINISTERS TOLD BY THEOLOGIAN "Unbalanced” View Of Authority In Church Is Hinderance To Unity ST'. PAUL, Minn., (NC) - The “unbalanced picture of au thority” in the Catholic Church has been a major obstacle to discussion of Christian unity, a Catholic theologian told 400 Protestant ministers here. Father David A. Dillon, pro fessor of theology at St. Paul Seminary, said the “outof focus” picture of authority is the result of “unfinished busi ness’ ’ of the First Vatican Council. Father Dillon ad dressed the 31st annual Minne sota State Pastors' Conference (Jan. 16) “The very fact of having a definite statement regarding the position and authority of the Pope, while having nothing about the position and authority of the bishops in the Church has re sulted in a picture of authority slightly out of focus,” he de clared. He said the First Vatican Council had on its agenda “ma terial that considered the whole scope of the teaching power and authority within the Church,” of which the autho rity of the Bishop of Rome was Religious Leaders Working For Calm At Clemson CLEMSON, S.C. (NC) - Reli gious leaders serving all-white Clemson College here have been actively working to encourage students and others to remain calm when the college is inte grated next term. This is the report of Father Thomas F. Tierney, C.S.P., pastor of St. Andrew’s Church. He served on a Committee on Religion and Ethics, a group of campus and community reli gious leaders called together by Clemson’s president, Robert Edwards, to strengthen respect for law. “I feel,” said Father Tier ney, “that excellent work has been done to prepare for inte gration. The students have re sponded admirably and no vio lence is anticipated.” He said that pastors through out the area have, in sermons 10 TARGET- (Continued from Page 1) religious leaders in the 10 cit ies will call a local con ference similar to the National Conference on Religion and Race to set up the unite to fight discrimination. Rev. Arthur E. Walmsley, chairman of the follow-up com mittee, told the delegates that the conference “has achieved an ecumenical engagement which is unique.” Rev. Walm sley is executive secretary of Christian citizenship, Depart ment of Christian School Rela tions, National Council, Protes tant Episcopal Church. and church bulletings, been urg ing calmness. In addition, church workers have been speaking to student groups. Harvey Gantt, a 20-year-old Charleston Negro and a student of architecture at Iowa State University, will transfer to Clemson under orders of the Fourth Circuit Court of Ap peals in Alexandria, Va. Thirsty For Ideas ST. LOUIS, (NC) - People in Latin America are hungry to discuss vital ideas on religion, culture, philosophy and politics, a St. Louis University professor reported after returning from South America. Margaret McClear, a veteran of 20 years’ teaching in U.S. schools before going to Latin America for the U.S. govern ment as inter-American super visor of education in Lima, Peru, four years ago, empha sized that most Latin Ameri cans were eager to discuss “almost everything.” “As supervisor of inter- American education, I found I was a combination janitor, public relations man,- police man - ih addition to my regu lar duties as curriculum plan ner, coordinator and teacher su pervisor,” she said. the first item discussed. With the seizure of Rome by Garibaldi’s troops in 1870, Fa ther Dillon said, “the members of the council dispersed without finishing the business.” The effect of this unfinished business, he Said, “has beeft to a great extent responsible for shaping the system of govern ing in the Catholic Church of modern times.” “It has encouraged the prac tice of referring decisions more and more to the office of the Pope,” he continued. “And, since one man cannot attend to all details, it has resulted in a vast centralization by putting a great amount of decision making power, even in local affairs, in the hand of the mem bers of the Curia (the Vatican central administrative body).” Father Dillon said an impor tant task before the Second Vatican Council will be “to set forth the doctrine on the epis copal office.” “Whatever statement the council makes,” he said, “is bound to have an effect not only within Roman Catholicism but on other Christian bodies” as well. “It takes no deep study of Christianity today,” he stated, “to realize that the unbalanced picture of authority in the Ca tholic Church that has pre vailed since 1870 has been one of the chief obstacles to any discussion of one Church under Christ. ‘ ‘This holds true not merely for Protestant churches, but eVeU more for the bishops of the Eastern churches, themselves successors of the Apostles.” Father Dillon told the Pro testant pastors that the pastoral tone set by the council’s first session is its most significant feature for Christianity. “There is no question now,” he said, “that the Second Vati can has made it clear that it will pass judgment on, not merely approve, the work of the preparatory commissions. “It has further asserted its determination not to deal with specific doctrinal definitions, but rather to proclaim the Ca tholic teaching in such a way that it will be more meaningful to Catholics of our time, more understandable to Christians who are not Catholics, and even more inviting to those outside Christianity,” he added. He said the council had “sounded the all-clear on the ageof defensiveness” dating back to the Council of Trent by concerning itself with the posi tive considerations of renewal and adaptation. MONUMENT IN THE MAKING In the making is a model of the commemorative monument of Pope Pius XII who did not want one. Although the late Pope asked that no monument be raised to his memory, the College of Cardinals decided to set aside his wish and com missioned sculptor Francesco Messina (above) of Milan to execute the work. The 12-foot high statue will be installed in the chapel of Blessed Innocent XI in St. Peter’s Basilica sometime this year. (NC Photos) PAGE 2—The Southern Cross, January 26, 1963 NUN REPORTS PREPARED ‘PACKAGED’ HOLY WATER Persecution Saddens Pope John (Radio, N.C.W.C. NEWS SERVICE) VATICAN CITY, - His Holi ness Pope John XXIII has re ceived with “profound grief” a report of the systematic ex pulsion of missionaries from southern Sudan. The report was given to the Pontiff by Archbishop Joseph McGeough, New York-born Apostolic Delegate to South Af rica, whom the Holy See had sent to the Sudan to make personal contact with Church and civil authorities there in an attempt to solve the problem. Archbishop McGeough said that he had two missions: to bring in the Pope’s name a word of encouragement to the clergy, the faithful and missionaries in the Sudan, and to make every effort possible to persuade a cessation of the “ever increa sing expulsions of missionaries in southern Sudan.” He said that he was unsuccessful in the se cond of his missions. After more than a month in the Sudan, Archbishop McGe ough returned to Rome to report on his mission. On the morning of January 18 he was received together with Gregorio Pietro Cardinal Agagianian, Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, in a private audience with the Pope. After the Archbishop had giv en an account of his efforts to Pope John, he was authorized by the Pope to indicate that, while he (the Pope) had no in tention of attacking the civil authorities, he could not but express his profound grief at the plight of the 400,000 Catho lics in southern Sudan who are being progressively deprived of the possibility of religious assistance and the comforts of their religion to which they have a right. The number of missionaries expelled in the final months of 1962 had reached 43 at the time of Archbishop McGeough’s ar rival in the Sudan. By the time of his departure, they had in creased to 83. This was in addition to the 56 expulsions ordered between the years 1958 and 1961. Still more expulsions may be expected, according to the Archbishop, as was clearly in dicated in the final official con tacts on January 9 when the only positive indication was that “all the missionaries would not be expelled.” Archbishop McGeough had deferred needed surgery to ac cept the commission to the Su dan. After completion of his mission, the Archbishop pre pared to go immediately to New York for medical attention. A student of Sudanese affairs here who declined to be named, commenting on the Arch bishop’s report, noted that the number of priests, Brothers and Sisters, including native vocations, is now hardly 300 in southern Sudan. Of these, he added, only 78 are priests en gaged in pastoral work. The Catholic population, the expert on the Sudan continued, is widely scattered over an area almost the size of Texas. The reduction of the number of missionaries, at best inade quate, creates an impossible task for religious assistance to the greater part of the Ca tholic population. The expert interpreted the development of the program of suppression of the missionaries in southern Sudan as being a “political game” purposely hidden under the mask of re ligious persecution. Its authors, he said, are not religious men but political men and they know that public opin ion is less aroused by religious persecution than by the sup pression of the civil rights of men. CAUGHT IN THE BREEZE Amusement reflects on the face of His Holiness Pope John XXIII as his cape flares out in the breeze. The Holy Father was visiting the Santa Maria Church in Rome, which was his longest trip from the Vatican since his recent illness.
