Xavierian Club Entertains
Jesup Catholic Youth Group
BRUNSWICK—The Xaverian
Club of St. Francis Xavier
Church were hosts, recently,
to the newly formed Catholic
Youth Group of Jesup.
The Jesup Club arrived in
Brunswick on Saturday morn
ing, April 27th and were es
corted to the homes of their
hosts and hostesses for lunch
In the afternoon the group en
joyed a Beach Party at Jekyll
Island. The Highlight of Satur
day evening was a dance given
in the school auditorium featur
ing the Beachwoods.
On Sunday morning, the
youths attended the 8:30 a.m.
Mass in a body and received
Holy Communion. Father Fas-
chan, S.M: Spiritual Director
of the Xaverian Club welcomed
the group and offered his con
gratulations for the splendid
attendance at all of the func
tions.
Immediately after the Mass,
a breakfast was served at the
school for the sixty youths in
attendance. Mr. Frank Rat-
cliffe was chairman of the
breakfast and was assisted by
Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Santos,
Mr. and Mrs. J. Armand Lloyd,
Mrs. Mae Madray and Mr.
Moore. Hovis Madray, Sargeant
at Arms for the Xaverian Club
acted as Master of Ceremonies
and Andrew Roth asked the
blessing.
Mr. Wilfredo Brito, Cuban
refugee and renowned lecturer
on Communism, was guest
speaker. His subject was,
“What the Catholic Church Has
Done to Fight Communism in
the World.” He outlined the tre
mendous part that the Catholic
clergy and laity are playing
toward combating communism.
Mr. Brito is a former member
of the Underground Movement
in Cuba and he related many
incidents on what has been done
to conquer communism in Cuba.
After Mr. Brito’s talk, a very
interesting question and ans
wer period followed.
The weekend of activities for
the Youth Groups proved satis
factory and brought about a
closer relationship between the
clubs. It is anticipated that in
the near future a similar week
end will be planned.
(Continued from Page 4)
justification where mortal sin
is concerned, but in the Sac
rament it does suffice.(Whereas
an act of perfect contrition can
restore one to the state of
grace, the intention to confess
one’s sins as soon as possible
is implicit in such an act, hence
it cannot be made without ref
erence to confession).
CONTRITION ought to be uni
versal in the sense that it must
extend to all mortal sins not yet
remitted, including those possi
bly forgotten.
IN PRACTICE, one should
always try to elicit an act of
perfect contrition before en
tering the confessional. “To
this end,” notes one theo
logian, “it is highly useful to
single out, though not exclus
ively, some particular sin which
one considers to be more ser
ious or more displeasing to
God.”
HATRED for sin, the second
element of contrition, refers to
intellectual detestation, not
emotional rejection (though the
latter is not thereby ruled out).
BY A FIRM determination to
sin no more is meant a sincere
resolve not only to avoid sin,
but to avoid, insofar as is pos
sible, the near occasions of
sin. This determination must be
both efficacious (i.e., it must
include the will to take the
necessary means to imple
ment it, by, for example, avoid
ing dangerous places, times or
persons) and universal (i.e., it
must embrace all mortal sin).

FRANK FRISCH: THE FORD-
HAM FLASH, by Frank Frisch
as told to J. Roy Stockton,
Doubleday, 1962, 287 pp., illus,
$4.50.
Reviewed by W. L. Schmidt.
Whenever I read an “as told
to” book, I imagine a person
without hands telling a writer
what to write about himself.
Psychologically this may be an
experience of the subconscious
forming a judgment of a great
person who never was able to
sharpen his writing tools
wanting a book published about
himself, but who was forced to
let someone else share the glory
and rewards of the purpose they
serve. They are a form of
ghosting, and, if it weren’t for
ghosts, how many lives of movie
stars would we not have on the
book shelves. The intent here is
to place works of this type in
truer perspective and to state
that this technique has never
produced a work of literary
depth or lasting qualities.
This is not to say that great
depth of thought and expression
is required or expected in this
sort of biography generally, or
in the life of Frank Frisch in
particular. Certainly readers in
the field of sports do not de
mand it. There might be an ar
gument in favor of increasing
the effect of this book were it
written in the third person. But
all this might be more quibbling
and of no value to fans of base
ball history and its heroes. For
it will be the athletic minded
who will read this work, and he
will certainly obtain a great
deal of enjoyment and informa
tion from this story that is real
ly well told about the great
Firsch who has been voted into
the Baseball Hall of Fame for,
among many other reasons,
playing with and managing the
St., Louis Cardinals with Dizzy
Dean, Leo Durocher, and
others, and for holding about all
of baseball’s honors.
SEMINARY LIFE IN VERSE,
by Father Louis J, Richard,
St. Paul Book Center, Derby,
N. Y., 1961, 61 pp,, 35<£,
This is andther one of those
cases of nice things that come
in small packages—but it does
come and it stays. There are
many delightful verses in this
booklet, a delight to read at
home, a delight for one who
looks back nostalgically on
seminary life, a delight for him
who uses it for perspective when
lost in the curriculum maze.
"Drop self-pity and you won’t
even feel the cut of the knife”
is not a bad line; as is “Lord
God protect me from earth’s
deceitful wile, And nod my
head unto Your warming
smile.”
You owe yourself this book
let; you owe it also to some,
if not all, of your friends.
“Do all for God; the rest
will soon be clear,” (LJZ)

St. James May Festival
SAVANNAH—Children of St.
James School long awaited May
1st, the occasion of the Annual
May Festival sponsored by the
St. James Home and School
Association.
Early dismissal of classes
permitted the children three
hours to participate and enjoy
the many and varied activities
planned for them. To set
the mood, hot dogs and soft
drinks were served and giant
lollipops and candy canes en
ticed the children to Candy
Land for sweets afterwards.
Competitive races such as
sack and peanut races, one
legged and three legged races
were featured throughout the
afternoon. A live hamster was
used in a game that originated
in Peru and was later the pet
of a lucky winner.
The Land of Fantasy pre
vailed as the children exited
from the Barber and Beauty
Shop made up as clowns, In
dian braves, princesses, wil-
lains, actresses and ladies-in
waiting. The House of Horrors
with its weird music and life
like skeletons was magnetic
in its appeal to the children,
as was the Gypsy Fortune Tel

Clowns with balloons on
sticks mingled with the gay
participants selling their wares
and Barkers announced the
opening of the White Elephant
Sale and the beginning of another
session of Musical Chairs.
