Pope John signs Motu Proprio convoking Second Vatican Council. Holy Father Proclaims a Saint—From his throne in St. Peter’s Basilica, His Holiness Pope John XXIII reads the proclamation naming Martin De Porres, a Peruvian mulatto, a saint of the Catholic Church. Italy's President Segni presents Holy Father with medal and Chalice as part of Balzan Peace Price ceremony. One of the last official functions was audience with Ste fan Cardinal Wyszynski, Polish Primate.
