♦ » } * PAGE 2—The Southern Cross, June 22, 1963 Pope Absolute Monarch Of Sovereign State VATICAN CITY, (NC)—Be sides being the Supreme Pon tiff of the Universal Church, the new pope will also be the head of a small city-state that is in some ways like a small town and in others like a nation. As Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, the pope rules' over a territory of 109 acres that has a 14-man fire depart ment that fights fewer than one fire a year, a police force and a jail that rarely houses a prisoner. But Vatican City has an army —the Swiss Guard—and coins its own money, prints its own stamps, issues its own pass ports. Established in 1929 as a re sult of the Lateran Treaties between Italy and the Holy See, Vatican City has about 1,000 citizens. It has all the facili ties that any normal city has: a post office, grocery store, pharmacy, clinic, printing shop, bookstore, daily newspaper, bakery and so on. And it has a number of civic features that are superior to other cities. Its parks and mu seums are unrivaled. Its li brary is unique. It has studios for the creation and restora tion of mosaics, tapestries, paintings and furniture that are the envy of specialists through out the world. Like sovereign nations, the Vatican has the right, accord ing to the Barcelona Declara tion of 1921, to establish its own naval fleet. The Lateran Treaties expressly provided for the circulation of Vatican air traffic over Italian territory. There is no Vatican navy or air force, although the creation of a heliport has at times been considered. Vatican City is an absolute monarchy with the pope as mon arch. Executive power is nor mally delegated to the governor of Vatican City. The state’s central administrative body is the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State which is made up of five cardinals, a secretary and other officials. Vatican City has four differ ent courts to handle civil cases and enforce its laws, which in clude an 18.6-mile-an-hour speed limit. Traffic fines aver age 40 cents, mostly for park ing violations, and are regard ed by many visitors as a suita ble souvenir of their stop in Vatican City. Order is maintained by the Swiss Guard, the Papal Gerdar- mes, the Palatine Guard and the Noble Guard. The Swiss Guards are the personal guards of the pope and his household. The Papal Gendarmes are the work ing police. The Palatine and Noble Guards serve as a guard of honor during ceremonies and solemn functions. The world’s smallest sover eign state, Vatican City con tains its largest church, St. Peter's basilica, 694 feet long, 464 feet high, topped by the huge dome and supported by 778 columns decorated with 395 stautes and housing 44 altars. AUGUSTA RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION COURSE—A two-weeks course of intensive religous instruction is presently being conducted at St. Mary’s on-the-Hill School, Augusta. Five classes are taught by Sister Mary Ray mond, Sister Mary Marguerite, Sister Mary Terence and two seminarians. Pictured with the more than one hundred public grammar students attending are (1 to r) Monsignor Daniel J. Bourke, Father Connolly, Seminarians Michael Smith and Patrick Mahon, Sister Mary Raymond, Sister Mary Mar guerite and Sister Mary Gerald, Principal. (Robert Wilkinson Photo) Newsman Stationed Outside Pope John’s Death Chamber Tells Of Last Four Days The author of the following article on Pope John’s last days is director of the Vatican press office, on which all news me dia depended for word of the Pontiff’s illness and death. For four days and nights he witness ed the dramatic events sur rounding the Pontiff’s final cri sis from a post just outside the papal death chamber. By Luciano Casimirri (N.C.W.C. NEWS SERVICE) VATICAN CITY—When the news came on Friday, May 31, that Pope John’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse, Father Salvatore Pap-, palardo, S.J., director of the Italian newscast of Vatican Ra dio, and I went to the third floor of the Apostolic Palace, from where we hoped to be able to inform the world with the greatest possible accuracy on the developments of the Pope’s illness. We were not allowed to enter the Pope’s private apartment. But the third floor was a stra tegic point. Whoever went from the Secretariat of State to see the Pope had to pass the point where we had stationed our selves. Archbishop Angelo Dell’Ac- qua, Substitute Secretary of State, became our chief in format as he passed us going to and from the Pope’s room. It was from him that we re ceived most of the details tell ing of Pope John’s edifying death. None of us could know then that the exceptionally strong constitution of Pope John would drive our nerves and endurance near the breaking point. Had we been told then that we were to remain at our post until the evening of Monday, June 3, the prospect would have appall ed us. BRUNSWICK Glynn Cleaners And Laundry Radio Dispatched Trucks 1916 NORWICH STREET BRUNSWICK, GEORGIA AM. 5-2930 Royal Typewriters - McCaskey Cash Registers - Victor Adding Machines - Calculators KNIGHT /W V Printing House OFFICE OUTFITTERS PHONE AM. 5-5250 BRUNSWICK, GEORGIA Later we knew that newsmen all over the city were going through the same ordeal. Staf fers at the N.C.W.C. News Service Rome bureau, like all others, stayed on the watch day and night from the morning of May 31 until the night of June 3, taking turns at catching a few hours’ sleep on the office floor. The first night of the final crisis was busy. There was a constant coming and going of cardinals and prelates hasten ing to the bedside of the dying Pontiff. We saw them come out of the apartment sad and worried. We wondered who would give us the news when it came, and above all who will give it to us quickly? We pressed Archbish op Antonio Samore, Secretary of State for Extraordinary Ec clesiastical Affairs, who was then about to go in and see the Pope. He assured us that he would let us know immediately should the Pope’s death appear imminent. When Pope John was told that all hope was gone and that he would have to prepare himself for death, he asked for the last sacraments. Even at the last his fine sense of humor did not fail him. Confronted with God’s judgement, he said: "Now you see, the Lord is going to ask me to give an account of those dried figs I stole from grand mother.” Dr. Piero Mazzoni, one of the physicians attending the Pope, amazed us by admitting candid ly that he was not strong in his faith. Yet he had a special ven eration for his patient and said: * ‘The simple things the Pope says have a marvelous signifi cance coming from these lips.” In the last days he never left the Pope’s room and we were told that more than once he knelt weeping to kiss the Pope’s hand. There was an eerie quality about the second night. There was not a sound on the third floor where we were. We had the impression that no one was about and that there really was no dying Pope. We jumped to our feet when we saw Archbishop Dell’Acqua ap pear in the first hours of the morning of the third day. He looked like a walking ghost. We asked him: "Your Excel lency, have you been called?” He said he had not. "Why don’t you stay in bed then, you are so tired?” we asked. And he said: "I can’t sleep. I must go and see. My only fear is that I may awaken the Pope’s brothers who are resting in the next room. The door was opened for the Archbishop by Guido Gusso, the Pope’s personal valet. He was pale and sad. Few men had served the Pope with such loyal ty and discretion as he. The next day was Sunday, and no one other than Amleto Cardinal Cicognani, the Pope’s Secretary of State, and Arch bishop Dell’Acqua were admit ted to the Pontiff’s room. Only the Pope’s relatives and his doctors were allowed to remain at his bedside for the little time that he had left. We were almost sick with fa tigue when the third night came. It was painful to stand and we would have gone barefoot ex cept for the decorum required by our situation. Somehow we managed to sleep for a few hours. The Pope was dying slowly. We knew that his strong con stitution could not resist death much longer. We never sight of Archbishop Dell’Acqua now. At 7 p.m. on Monday, June 3, Luigi Cardinal Traglia, pro- Vicar General of Rome, cele brated Mass in St. Peter’s square for the many thousands who had gathered there. The people attended that Mass with such silent devotion that all we could hear were the swallows flying outside the windows by which we were stationed. As the Mass was nearing its end Archbishop Dell’ Acqua was called in from the terrace where he had been following the Mass. A few minutes passed and suddenly the Archbishop came rushing out. "He died at 7:49,” he shouted. It was then 7:50. My emotions were mixed, sad and happy at the same time; sad at the untimely passing of the Pope; happy that a difficult and delicate job had now been accomplished in the way we had hoped. I was desperately in need of rest, but the discom fort seemed insignificant com pared with the privilege I had of spreading over the world the sublime lessons of spirituality and faith of the dying Pope. There was a real satisfac tion, too, in knowing that all journalists had been given the news equally and simultaneous ly. In this way they had been able to perform their duty in an atmosphere of seriousness and responsiblity without allowing the spirit of competition to in trude upon the grief of the pass ing of a great man. <- - , . . Legion Of Decency Drops ‘Separate Classification’ Sets Up Class A-Section IV NEW YORK, (NC)—The Na tional Legion of Decency has dropped its "Separate Classi fication” section and replaced it with a category known as "Class A—Section IV” for mo tion pictures which are eval uated as "morally unobjection able for adults—with reserva tions.” The first picture rated in the new classification is * ‘The L Shaped Room,” a Columbia Pic tures—Davis-Royal release. ‘ ‘A starkly realistic but sen sitive presentation of a young woman caught between her quest for love and the brutality of society, this film’s resounding theme is the dignity and nobili ty of the human being,” the legion stated in its evaluation of "The L Shaped Room.” "Indicting abortion and ex posing the deception of promis cuity, the film implicily af firms the necessity of marriage for the responsible fulfillment of true human love. However, the development of the theme and its realistic treatment of subject matter require analysis on the part of the viewer,” the evaluation stated. The legion emphasized that the change from "Separate Classification” to the "Class A—Section IV” classification is one of "title,” not of "mean ing.” The legion said the new category, like the "Separation Classification” will be for "certain films which, while not morally offensive in themsel ves, require caution and some analysis and explanation as a protection to the uninformed against wrong interpretation and false conclusions.” In recent years, the legion evaluated 29 motion pictures in the "Separate Classification.” Among the more prominent of these movies were: "Advise and Consent;” "Anatomy of a Murder;” "Case of Dr. Lau rent "Divorce, Italian Style;’ ’ "Freud;” "King of Kings;” "La Dolce Vita;” "Lolita;” "Long Day’s Journey Into Night;” "Pressure Point;” "The Sky Above and the Mud Below;” "Suddenly, Last Summer;” "Victim,” and "Walk on the Wild Side.” “Our Pope” Too OTTAWA, Ont., (NC)—The headline read:" J ohn * Our Pope’ Too.” The story under it said: "It was fantastic really the way we came to regard him as be longing to us. Once when he received a delegation of Jewish people he met them with the words ‘I am Joseph, your bro ther.’ That’s the way he affected most of us.” The tribute to Pope J ohn XXIII was paid in the Observer, pub lication of the United Church of Canada and the story was writ ten by Rev. Dr. A. C. Forrest, the editor. It was typical of scores of other tributes paid to the late Pope by secular and non-C a t h o 1 i c publications throughout Canada.
