The whole world is interested in the pro ceedings and discussions, be cause the course of our des tinies will be greatly influenced by the deliberations and delu sions of the Council Fathers. The ultimate aims of individual renewal in Christ and unity of Christian believers is well known. The success of the Council depends as much on the prayers of each of us as it does on the wise and concerned suggestions of the assembled hierarchs. All of us have been amply forwamed that "grass-roots’’ reformation of our personal lives will alone effect wide spread and collective sanctity sufficient to meet successfully the inroads of current evil phil osophies, governmental sys tems and pagan environments. This calls for unrelenting conversations with God and ex haustive examination of per sonal habits. Ho w To Raise A Delinquent Begin from infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this way he will grow up to be lieve that the world owes him a living. When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. It will encourage him to pick up "cuter phrases” that will blow the top of your head off later. Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21 and then let him decide for himself. Avoid the use of the word "wrong.” It may develop a guilt complex. This will condition him to believe later when he is arrested for stealing a car that society is against him and he is being persecuted. Pick up everything he leaves lying around—books, shoes, and clothes. Do everything for him so he will be experienced in throwing the responsibility on to others. Let him read any printed mat ter he can get his hands on. Be careful the silverware and drinking glasses are sterilized but let his mind feed on gar bage. Quarrel frequently in the pre sence of children. Then they won’t be too shocked when the home is broken up. Give the child all the spend ing money he wants. Never let him earn his own. Why should he have things as tough as you had them? Satisfy his every craving for food, drink and comfort. See that every desire is granted. Denial may lead to harmful frustration. Take his part against the neighbors, teachers and police men. They are all prejudiced against your child. When he gets into real trouble apologize for yourself by saying, "I never could do any thing with him.” Prepare for a life of grief— ‘ ‘You will have it.” Johnnie Ganem Steak Ranch CHARCOAL BROILED STEAKS PRIME STEAKS DINNERS-LUNCHEON COCKTAILS DINNER MUSIC Gaston and Habersham AD 3-3032 * Irradtaltd "WPji&fVtlaimn-T) JLnneite^ Over 40 Years of Dependable Courteous Service SAVANNAH. Carmel. On Saturday morning, Sep tember 14th, Feast of the Ex altation of the Holy Cross, Miss Margaret Ann Kavanaughofthis City of Savannah, dressed in a graceful wedding gown, holding a lighted taper, approached the cloister Chapel grate, which was wide open for the occasion, to publicly dedicate her life to the service of God and man through a life of sacrifice and prayer. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Thomas J. McDon ough, conferred the Holy Habit with his blessing in the time- honored ceremony, as Sister Patrick of the Mother of God POPE PAUL- (Continued from Page 1) venerable age. . .how at the same time it feels the need of being simplified and decen tralized and the need of being broadened and made fit for new functions.” Noting that the Curia itself would formulate and promulgate its own reform, he said: ‘ ‘Therefore, the Roman Curia will not be afraid of being re cruited with a broader superna tional vision, or of being edu cated with a more accurate ecu menical preparation.” The Curia, he said, will not be jealous of the privileges of for mer times, or of "exterior forms” no longer suitable to express religious realities. ‘ ‘Nor will it be miserly of its faculties which, without da mage to the universal eccles iastical order, the episcopacy can today exercise better by it self and locally,” he said. Reasons of economy will not be used to suggest "any re serves or centralization on the part of the organs of the Holy See,” he said. After affirming that, if the council so desires, bishops of dioceses may share responsi bility for the government of the entire Church, Pope Paul said: ‘ ‘Surely the Roman Curia will not oppose this.” Speaking with emotion, the Pope said: "The Roman Curia is.not an anonymous body, insensitive to the great spiritual problems, which dictates laws automati cally. It is rather a living or gan, faithful and docile, of the head of the Church; an organ engrossed in the serious re sponsibilities of its functions, and full of reverence and of solicitude towards those pre lates whom 'the Holy Spirit has placed. . .as Bishops, to rule the Church of God.’ (Acts 20, 28). Therefore let the Roman Cu ria not be a bureaucracy—as some wrongly judge it—pre tentious and apathetic, merely legalistic and ritualistic, a jousting field of hidden ambi tions and of intractable antago nisms, as others accuse it of being. But let it be a true com munity of faith and charity, of prayers and action, of brothers and sons of the Pope. . .” Before giving his blessing, Pope Paul urged both the ec clesiastics and laymen of the Curia "to add to your labors of office some other spontane ous labors of the ministry and the personal apostolate.” Thus they would help the Pope "to evangelize not only the world but the City (of Rome) as well, of which you are the foremost faithful and he th e bishop!” answered the simple questions, manifesting her desire for the Carmelite way of life. Returning to the inside clois ter, Sister Patrick exchanged her bridal gown of the world for the coarse, brown woolen habit of a Carmelite recluse. Then she returned to the chapel grate to receive the Holy Scap ular of Our Lady of Mt. Car mel, symbolizing her pre ference for the sweet yoke of Christ; the cincture which binds her to the austere life of pen ance and the white mantle and veils which signify the purity and holiness of Carmel. The Very Reverend Felix Donnelly, now stationed at the Sacred Heart Church, Augusta preached a very appropriate sermon portraying Carmel as a pillar of strength and holiness, for the Diocese. Where people can always have recourse for helpful advice and prayers in every need. The sermon was terminated with the expressive words of Psalm 25 "I have lov ed, O Lord, the beauty of Thy House and the place where Thy glory dwelleth.” His Excellency was assisted by the Very Rev. Bede Light- ner, OSB, and Reverend Andrew Doris, OSB, and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Andrew J. McDonald was Master of Ceremonies. The novice is the daughter of the late Mr. Patrick Byron Kavanaugh. Mrs. Celeste M. Kavanaugh, the novice’s Mother with her two sisters and brothers, as well as relatives and friends were present for the ceremony. The ancient Order of Carmel traces its descent from the Prophet Elias, the story of his marvelous life is related in Holy Scriptures in the III and IV Books of Kings. He lived with a gathering of solitaries in caves on Mt. Carmel in Palestine. The coat of arms of the Order bear at the top a flaming sword, char acterizes his zeal and a scroll with the words: "With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of Hosts.” The devotion to the Virgin Mother of God has been a Car melite characteristic through the centuries, and her Holy Scapular has been an armor of strength and protection at all times, being a rich treasure of Indulgences and spiritual favors for those who wear it. The Time-old wording: "More is wrought by prayer than this world known” expres ses Carmel’s spirit in its mem bers. For prayer is the very life of Carmel, the sole occupa tion enjoined upon its religious. Apostolic Administrator SAN DIEGO, Calif., (NC) — Bishop Francis J. Furey, new ly entrhoned Coadjutor Bishop of San Diego, also holds the post of Apostolic Administrator of the diocese. Announcement that Bishop Furey is Apostolic Administra tor was made by Bishop Charles F. Thomas Georges presiding. The Court was crowded with parents listening to a greeting by Rev. Christopher Johann, the principal of Benedictine. Father Christopher spoke on the value of education. He emphasized that true education enhances the mental and spiritual life of man, not necessarily the material life. This in turn produces a man the ability to enjoy life. These new officers for the year were introduced: Vice president, Mrs. Frank T. Ansley; recording secretary, Mrs. Joseph H. McCormick; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Roy S. Banks; treasurer, Mrs. Charles Carter, publicity, Mrs. Claude M. O’Hara; entertain ment, Mrs. Frank Sigman; Kitchen, Mrs. Ann Brown. Mrs. William Lingerfelser has accepted the chairmanship of the annual turkey dinner and bazaar to be held November 6 and 7. She asked that all mo thers accept their responsibili ties in making this the most suc cessful bazaar Benedictine has ever had. The affair is to be held on the campus of the new school. Mrs. Charles Carter is the co-chairman. Following the meeting, the parents made informal tours of the campus, admiring all of the present day school innova tions. The October meeting is to be a "back to school” for parents. A short period of time will be spent in each classroom with the teacher going quickly through the routine of his particular class. Increased Enrollment At Belmont BELMONT, NC—With a sev en per cent increase in enroll ment at Belmont Abbey College, the 88th academic year begins with a parking problem. The campus students have their own parking space in the residence area, but the commuting students from Gaston and Meck lenburg Counties completely fill the large parking lot and over flow into the campus roads. The new freshman dormitory, officially named Poellath Hall after the late venerable Bro ther George Poellath, O.S.B., who was the caretaker of the Abbey Cathedral for 67 years, is now housing 210 new stu dents. The increase of resi dent campus students is almost 100% over last year with 450 students now residing on cam pus. Two years ago, the Col lege had accommodations for about 200 students only.
