Pope John-Educator
(By Elio Gasperetti)
(Writer, ^artist, historian,
Elio Gasperetti is the author of
numerous newspaper and maga
zine articles, many of which he
illustrated himself. He revised
and enlarged John Farrow’s
“Pageant of the Popes’’ for the

Lord, might also describe the
Christlike figure of His servant
John XXIII.
Pope John’s teaching was as
old as Christianity and as new
as the 196Q’s. For he saw the
Church, not as an institution
marking time till the Second
Coming as it sighed for the
Middle Ages gone by, but as
Christ on earth now. Religion
was something in and of the
20th century—and so was edu
cation.
VIEWS NOT NEW
And yet his views on educa
tion were not particularly ori
ginal.
His advice to teachers to
“adopt modern techniques,”
* ‘establish fruitful contacts
with the families of their stu
dents” and attempt an “under-
standing^ of the youthful per
sonality and its problems” can
also be heard at a teachers’*
convention.
Furthermore, teachers had
already learned in teacher’s
colleges that the teaching pro
cess consisted not in “super
imposing a set of notions. . .
from outside or above” but in
leading pupils “into a shared
search for truth. . .arousing
the adolescent’s interest and
spirit of cooperation. . .treat
ing him with benevolence, un
derstanding, fairness and com
passion in order to develop his
emotional values as well as
his intellectual ones.” And long
before the late Pope told stu
dents that the future was their
responsibility and that they
must practice fortitude, self-
reliance and perseverance
others had given them the same
advice.
While advocating greater ex
cellence in technical and scien
tific training, John XXIII also
upheld the liberal arts and
counted all education imcom-
plet e if the teacher did not ful
fill his nobler mission to * ‘shape
and mold the souls” of stu
dents. But, then, had not philo
sophers talked for ages of edu
cating “the whole man?”
Pope John also spoke of the
press’ educational function and
warned repeatedly about abuses
against truth and morality in
the communications media. But
the world was already aware
of much irresponsibility in the
production of books, periodi
cals, motion pictures, and ra-
