i PAGE 6—The Southern Cross. November 7, 1963 Ijjoutli Fdc ^ S (By Rev. Herbert J. Wellmeier) op Monsignor Brennan deserves a special tribute from this col umn. particularly since the Blessed Sacrament parish has more teenagers than any par ish in Savannah, and one of the largest groups in the diocese. It was truly an inspiring wit ness of their love for him, when great numbers of St. Vin cent girls received Holy Com munion at Monsignor’s funeral Mass. Bach time that I discussed programs or problems with him about CYO, he evinced a lively interest and made wise sug gestions. Even though he was weary and exhausted and in general poor health, he never lost his concern for their wel fare. Always his remarks show ed that he was aware of the difficulties and temptations of adolescence. As Father Ed Frank noted in his beautiful eulogy, “His lips spoke and his hands worked sacramentally in an unending effort to care for the spiritual needs of his paro chial family.’’ So, the youth have lost a great friend and champion, a priest who through forty long years toiled tireless ly on behalf of all Catholics, but none so much as children and youth. He will have a place in the memory of many generations, and it is hoped the sacred mem ory will provoke prayerful re membrances for the repose of his noble soul, a happy young thinking soul that dwelt in a pain-wracked body for nearly a decade. parish and to any other vic tims of my over-generali zation. Bishop Leibold, auxiliary bi ship of Cincinnati, in discussing Catholic education, in a public forum some weeks ago, ex pressed “grave concern” over 4r, °*iit co»* 5, ' v<k For two reasons I was de lighted with a phone call from a member of the St. Anthony CYO in Savannah. It demon strated that some young people do read this column and take the trouble to comment on its contents. And since the call was in the form of a protest or disagreement with a state ment made two weeks ago, it proved also that they have cour ageous convictions. I am happy to eat crow and retract the blanket condemna tion of teenagers neglecting to give generously to the church. Their CYO had recognized the wisdom of the Confraternity of the Laity program as an oppor tunity to support important dio cesan projects, and had pledged weeks ago to make a generous and sacrificial contribution. My abject apologies to the CYO members of St. Anthony what are we are doing in the field of religion. Suggesting that the test of the effectiveness of religious education is to be found in the graduates of Catho lic Schools, he listed some of the qualities that he said should be manifest in the graduates: First, the least we can ex pect is that they know their re ligion. They will not know it un less as a first step they are made to study it in clear and precise formulas. “Secondly, (we can expect) that the truths of faith become a part of their daily living. We have failed somewhere when a girl gets her diploma for 12 years of Catholic education one day and stands before a non-Catholic minister the next day to go through a marriage ceremony, and considers this action only as neglecting a for mality of Church law, with no appreciation of the loss of the supernatural life. “Thirdly (we can expect) that not only those graduates whom God has called to make a sacrifice to follow his call will be inspired to do so, but that our schools will train real Cath olic lay leaders. If we are truly convinced that we hve the truth and the correct way ot life, why do not our Catholic graduates take the lead in pre senting it and thus influencing for good their fellow citizens, instead of the other way around?” These thoughts have been ex pressed in many a bull session among sincerely concerned priests of the diocese. We hope an effective answer is found soon. News From Pacelli High By Peggy Harris CD In accordance with the wish es of the fathers of the Second Vatican Council, Pacellians are taking a fuller part in their re ligious services. This increas ed participation is particularly evident in the Mass, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, which high lights the first Friday of each month. While Father James, assist ed by two PHS altar boys, says the Mass in the traditional La tin, the student “congregation” follows in English. At various parts of the Holy Sacrifice, the students sing hymns especially adapted to the tunes of familiar Church music. These hymns, being appro priate to the theme of the first Friday Mass, usually refer to the Sacred Heart. As the priest is leaving the altar, students and teachers join in singing a hymn praising the name of God. Dr. Agatha Thrash, a patho logist from St. Francis Hospi tal, lectured the members of the Allied Medical Careers Club. Her discussion was based mainly on the job of the blood bank. To illustrate her explana tions, Dr. Thrash brought a bottle of blood in which the cells had separated from the serum. As a result of this talk, the club members learned a good deal about this aspect of hospital work. A combination bonfire-pep rally on the school grounds October 24 began a round of activities celebrating Pacelli’s Homecoming. During the rally, PHS cheerleaders lead the stu dents in songs and cheers, cli maxing the event by burning a West Point Devil in effigy. The next night, at the game halftime, the 1963 Homecoming Queen and her court were pre sented to the spectators. Last Monday, the results of the elec tion from among the junior, sophomore, and freshmen candidates were announced. In the queen’s court were Toni Thompson, Katie Hennes sey and Margaret Laughlin, in addition to two senior girls. The senior candidates for queen were Neville Brickhouse, Bar bara Bruni and Sandy Tillman. Tentative plans for the ex- tablishment of an alumni asso ciation for graduates of PHS are being discussed by Father James, chaplain, and Maj. and Mrs. Robert Lagen, directors. They intend to hold an organi zational meeting prior to Christmas, and are planning a social for the holidays. Two-thirds of the juniors took the Preliminary Scholastic Ap titude Test (SAT), which lasted approximately two and one-half hours. The purpose ofthePSAT is to prepare the student for the College Board Tests they will take in their senior year. Early in November, freshmen and sophomores will take the National Educational Develop ment Tests. Usually taken in March, the NEDTs will be given earlier this year so that stu dents and teachers will have a better chance to do something about any weak points made evi dent by the tests. The school paper, “Pacelli- vues,” has received the gift of a Polaroid Camera with a thou sand flash attachment. The camera was given to the paper by Sister M. Leonard’smother, Mrs. Karl P. Schrader of Minneapolis. Integration Required For Aid RICHMOND, Va. (NC) — A Federal court has ruled that private hospitals seeking Fed eral construction funds must desegregate their facilities. The U. S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit held (No vember 1) that a “separate but equal” provision of the Hill- Burton hospital construction act violates the equal protection provisions of the 5th and 14th Amendments to the Federal Constitution. The “separate but equal” provision has permitted segre gated private hospitals to re- cieve Hill-Burton funds so long as equal hospital facilities are available for both races in the same area. The Court of Appeals decision overruled a North Carolina and also went counter to other rul ings in the state and Federal courts. The cost of the ads appearing in this week’s issues of the 7 papers is anticipated to be $111.14. Balance which will be on hand when this bill is paid will be $34.58. It is anticipated that present donors will continue to support the pw*am in the same mea sure as last year and that the program will continue and ex pand during the year. Father Kaiser wrote me on April 29th giving the following statistical information up to that date : For the papers in Statesboro, Metter and Swainsboro—68 in quiries. For the papers in Waynes boro and Louisville—33 inqui ries. For the papers in Sylvania and Millen—12 inquiries. A total of 113 inquiries re ceived since the program be gan. I have also been informed by one of the Home Mission Fathers in the Swainsboro area that a lady there had taken the course of instruction as a result of the ads and he thought was seriously contemplating coming into the Church. Anti-Semitism Action Likely JERUSALEM, Israel, (NC) — A Jewish spokesman said here the ecumenical coun cil is “likely to issue a call to Christendom against anti- Semitism and seek a rap- proachement with the Jew ish people.” Nahum Goldmann, presi dent of the World Jewish Congress and the Worlds Zionist Organization, told a press conference here (Oct. 29) that “there is reason to believe” that a resolu tion to this effect has been drafted by the Vatican Sec retariat for Promoting Christian Unity. He said he believes the matter will come out at the council in a few months. He also said that the coun cil is "likely to take a very significant decision ac quitting the Jewish people of exclusive responsibility for the Crucifixion and plac ing responsibility on man kind as a whole.” At Dunbarton WASHINGTON, D. C., —Miss Barbara Carole Sigman, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Merriman of Savannah, Geor gia, is a member of the fresh man class at Dunbarton College of Holy Cross here. She is a 1963 graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy. Her 111 classmates arefrom 22 states, the District of Colum bia, Puerto Rico and 10 foreign- countries. Opposition - (Continued from Page 3) Council of the Presidency is constantly studying wasy of speeding up procedures. But that at the moment no specific plan for changing the present procedure is being considered. Archbishop Krol said the pre sent rules are about as good as can be expected, although they are not perfect. The only one that he thinks might be altered is the present dis- crepency between the type of majority needed to pass a con ciliar act and that needed to re ject it. Under the present rules a two-thirds majority is needed to pass a measure while a sim ple majority against a measure is sufficient to defeat it. Archbishop Krol noted that the Council of the Presidency has the task of seeing to it that council rules are respect ed. Moderators actually run the council and can do as they like as long as they follow the rules. For example, when the mod erators originally presented the four questions they wanted the Fathers to vote on, the Presidency overruled them be cause such an act was not per mitted by the council norms The matter was referred to th Coordinating Commission which met with the Cardinals ol the presidency and moderator and worked out a way in which .the questions could be present ed without violating .the rules and that the wording of the questions could not be inter preted as favoring one side or another. Archbishop Krol asserted that the council has shown unanimity of spirit somewhat unexpected after the tre mendous number of opinions ex pressed on one question or ano ther. “Last year’s discussions on a part of the liturgy schema with a total of 630 oral and written interventions —would according to many, give little hope for accord,” he said. “Yet after the 26 major recommen dations returned to the floor from the commission, the ave rage favorable note on 36 coni secutive ballots was in excess of 98.4 per cent.” ECHOLS TRANSFER INC. 0 yC y HAULING & MOVING U Truck & Driver $3,50 per Hour Tractor Trail or & Driver $4.50 per Hour “Serving Customers Throughout Georgia” 370 Lee St. _S.
