An important insight was giv
en at the National CYO Conven
tion in New York in November
that is too noteworthy to over
look.
"One of America’s sacred
cows is its youth” Monsignor
George A. Kelly, director of
the New York Archdiocese
Family Life Bureau, told a con
vention session of young adult.
"In no other country are the
young better washed, better in-
noculated, better understood.
And yet nowhere else are they
so much a problem. Almost
everywhere else youngsters are
afraid of their parents, the cop
on the corner, the priest in or
out of the confessional. But in
the United States, the minority
called 'Youth' runs almost ev
eryone else. Certainly our
social workers and our courts
blame juvenile delinquency on,
everyone else but the ju-‘
veniles”, he added.
"Nor do I blame American
Youth. The only trouble with our
boys and girls is that they are
too smart, they have learned
their lessons too well. I sat
sometime ago in a typical Am
erican home. The mother gave*
an order. The son replied: T
don’t have to do anything I don’t
want to.’ He was eight years
old.
"All of this is a result of
our peculiar ideas of freedom:
anyone has the perfect right to
do what he wants to do, and
the more that people want to
do something, the more this
makes it right.”
"We have our American Ci
vil Liberties union but no Am
erican civil responsibility un
ion. We have our societies to
protect rights, but societies to
eliminate wrongs are consid
ered fascist.”
"Even in Catholic circles,”
Monsignor Kelly said there is
heard,” so much of such plati
tudes as 'youth must decide
for themselves.’ Law, order,
right, even God must wait upon
acceptance even by the eight-
year-old, or the 18 year-old,
for that matter, who could well

destroy himself—and often has
—by taking the magazines, the
educators, or the politicians too
seriously.”
How true, how true! This pe
culiar idea of freedom has jeo
pardized the morality of many a
young adult, teenager and even
sub-teen. "I don’t have to
do anything I don’t want to,”
has been heard all too often
from ill-bred comtemptible lit
tle creatures whose woodshed
lickings and soap-in-mouth dis-

cipline have been sadly neglec
ted. Too frequently the train
ing by appeal to reason has
been tried and found lacking in
effectiveness.
As for the platitude "youth
must decide for itself,” a lit
tle of that goes a long way.
Certainly much freedom of ex
pression must be allowed and
independent thinking free of
bias, cliches and fuzzy out-worn
slogans permitted to develop, if
future leaders are to be reared.
But if no clamps are ever put on
the wildest and most irreverent
ideas, a completely undisci
plined, lawless anarchistic gen
eration will spring up and wreck
civilization and all our precious
heritage. Is nothing of the past
worthy of respect and tradition,
(handing down to succeeding
ages).
Certainly a happy combina
tion of immutable truths in fresh
and modern appearance can be
arrived at. The Council proves
that. In other fields, the same
must be achieved.

News From
Pacelli High
COLUMBUS — Juniors have
received the results of the PSAT
(preliminary Scholastic Ap
titude Test) which they took in
October. This test, similar to
the College Board exam , is
designed to prepare third year
high school students for the
CEEB, which they will take in
their senior year. Brian Boyle
made the highest score in Math,
while top scores in English were
earned by Val Lawrence, Myra
Phifer, and Katy Sweeney.
Undertaking their annual
Christmas project, Pacellians
are planning lists of items for
boxes of food and clothing. Each
home room is responsible for
providing one of these baskets,
which will be given to poor
families for Christmas.
In accordance with the true
Christmas spirit, the Squires,
members of the youth branch
of the Knights of Columbus, are
urging Pacellians to send re
ligious Christmas cards this
year.
A New Year’s dance and
breakfast at the Pacelli cafeto-
rium will be the senior class’
first activity.
The dance will be held from
9 p.m. until 12:30 a.m., with
music by "The Temptations,”.
Sisters Guests
Of Alumnae At
Christmas Party
SAVANNAH—The Sisters of
Mercy at St. Vincent’s Convent
were guests at a Christmas
party given by the Alumnae As
sociation on the evening of De
cember 12th.
The cafeteria was beautiful
ly decorated in the tradition of
Christmas and Santa Clause
was on hand with gifts for the
Sisters. The St. Vincent’ Girls’
Choir, under the direction of
Mrs. Joseph Schreck, present
ed a program of Christmas
music and the applause of
the audience brought them back
for a number of encores.
Mrs. Charles Ray and Mrs.
James Stafford were chairmen
of the affair.
Christmas Hymns Highlight Of Aquinas Meeting
AUGUSTA—The Aquinas
Glee Club and Junior Choral
Group, under the direction of
Sister Anne Richard, C. S. J.,
presented a program of Christ
mas hymns and carols at the
December meeting of the Par
ent-Teacher Organization. So
loists for "The Friendly
Beasts,” traditional twelfth
century composition, were El
sie McCarthy, Tina Gonzalez,
Kathleen Demarco and Madeline
Tantillo. Among the acappella
renditions were Gardener’s "A
Christmas Folk Song," Molzers
"Christmas Night” andthetra-
ditionals "Deck the Hall,” "0
Come All Ye Faithful,” "Bells”
and the spiritual "What You
Goin to Name Him?” The open
ing number was "Chiming
Bells” and the closing selection
was Simeones' "The Little
Birth Control-
(Continued From Page 3)
program, the birth control issue
has been raised also in connec
tion with government-sponsor
ed biomedical research.
A report on research on re
production issued last Septem
ber by the National Institutes of
Health, research arm of the
Public Health Service, showed
the Federal government to be
far and awa'y the largest backer
of such studies. According to
this source, Federal agencies
were providing $5.2 million for
this purpose, some 64% of the
total of $8,184,208 being spent
to aid research projects.
Among Federal agencies, NIH
itself was shown to be the lead
er in supporting such studies,
with an expenditure of $3,426,-
134 to aid 198 projects. Other
government agencies involved
in this field, according to the
report, are the Atomic Energy
Commission, the Department of
Agriculture, the National
Science Foundation, the Defense
Department, the Bureau of State
Services, and the Interior De
partment.
The NIH report emphasized
(as had a preliminary study
published in December, 1962)
that it "neither advocates nor
condemns birth control” and
that the development of improv
ed birth control techniques "is
not an objective toward which
the NIH has a planned effort.”
Last April the late President
Kennedy was queried at a press
conference about the expen
diture of government funds in
this area. In reply he exhibited
the caution that has marked the
government’s approach to the
issue.
His questioner asked the
President if he agreed that "the
Federal government should
participate actively in an attack
on uncontrolled population
growth.”
Mr. Kennedy pointedly re
phrased the query, saying: "If
your question is, can we do
more, should we know more
about the whole reproduction
cycle, and should this informa
tion be made more available to
the world so that everyone can
make their own judgment, I
would think that it would be a
matter which we could certain
ly support.”
A similar theme was sounded
by a national Catholic spokes
man at the time the NIH’s pre
liminary report on research
was made public last Decem
ber. Msgr. John C. Knott, di
rector of the Family Life Bu
reau, National Catholic Welfare
Conference, commended gov
ernment support of basic re
production research.
The information gained in this
manner, he said, "in time would
benefit thousands of presently
sterile couples and possibly
prevent the malformation, crip
pling and retardation of hun
dreds of thousands of innocent
babies.”
"The fact that such informa
tion could be used for what we,
as Catholics, would consider
immoral purposes should not
prevent us from supporting
those who are seeking the truth
. . .Ignorance is more to be
feared that truth or even its
misuse,” Msgr. Knott said.
But advocates of an activist
government policy on birth con
trol are not satisfied with an
approach limited to support of
basic research. They seek a
major government effort to cope
with the problem of rapid popu
lation growth, seem as a major
obstacle to social and economic
progress in underdeveloped
countries and, ultimately, as a
serious threat to world peace.
The National Academy of
Sciences, in a report last April
calling for stepped-up efforts to
promote international family
planning programs, said that if
world population continues to
grow at its present rate there
will be more than 25 billion
people on the earth by the year
2070, compared with some 3
billion at present.
The implications of these fi
gures are as apparent to Catho
lics as to other Americans, but
as countless spokesmen have
made clear, Catholics cannot
sanction the use of public funds
to pay for immoral means to
even a worthy end.
While an accommodation that
would satisfy all parties'to the
dispute over the government’s
role is probably possible, its
probability remains in doubt.
Good will and hard work would
both be necessary to find a solu
tion. One approach, suggested
by Father John A. O’Brien of
Notre Dame University, is for a
White House conference bring
ing together representatives of
various viewpoints for talks
aimed at ending what he calls
"the war over birth control.”
Pending some such develop
ment, however, the only realis
tic prospect is for more state
ments, more political maneu
vering and—more confusion.

panists were Susan Craig, Cla

zanne Smith, Theresa Zeller,

Mrs. Charles Picciuola ex

their outstanding work. The
chairmen were as follows: Mrs.
E. J. McMahon, Mrs. Thos. A.

Mrs. Denny Leonard, Mrs. Jos.

The station also noted that
city officials in Jerusalem have
urged the people to decorate
the buildings along the route the
Pope is to follow.
Vatican officials predicted
that a special press office would
be established by the Apostolic
Delegation in Jerusalemtopro-
vide for accreditation of the
possibly 1,000 correspondents
who will cover the pilgrimage.
It was expected here that Vati
can personnel would be assigned
to staff the special press center.
Among the press arrange
ments under consideration by
various government agencies, it
was understood, were requests
by several television compan
ies for permission to follow the
Pope’s progress through the
Holy Land by cameras operated
by hovering holicopters. Offi
cials indicated that those re
quests stemmed from the fact
that the narrowness of the
streets of Jerusalem will pose
tremendous problems for news
coverage.
