Communist
Meetings Hit
VATICAN CITY (NC)—L’Os-
servatore Romano has warned
Italian Catholics to beware of
playing into communist hands
by taking part in Catholic-
communist meetings.
The Vatican City daily’s
editorial (March 4) was occas
ioned by an international con
ference of young people and
students held a week earlier
in Florence on the problems of
peace, disarmament and nation
al independence. The leftist-
oriented meeting was attended
by Catholics and welcomed by
Florence’s Mayor Giorgio La
Pira, leading Catholic layman.
L’Osservatore Romano said
that such meetings aim at put
ting communism and the church
on the same level in Italian life
and that communist news
papers, such as Rome’s Unita,
exploit the meetings for pro-
Bruni and Donna Eversman as
their representatives.
The yearbook staff has work
ed overtime during the past
several weeks to meet the dead
line. After checking to see that
all students had been recognized
for honors, activities and club
work, the final draft was mail
ed Monday.
The seniors entertain
ed the student body with an
assembly program which
stressed school'spirit. During
the assembly, Pacellians were
thanked for their participation
in the March of Dimes drive
and recognition was given to
those students who attended
the Barkley Forum.

paganda purposes. As a result,
the editorial said, it is the duty
of Catholics "not to offer, even
in the fervor of charity, pre
texts and equivocal situations
for the dangerous game being
played by the communists.”

Says Anti-Red Southern
Racists Aid Communists
CINCINNATI (NC)—"It is
ironic that the nation's most
articulate anti-communists are
the racists of the South, and
they do more harm than the
professional agents of the com
munist conspiracy,”
The observation came from
Father Louis J. Twomey, S.J.,
of New Orleans, who was born
and reared in a Deep South
"rigidly segregated com
munity” and now is a veteran
campaigner for human rights
and social justice.
The clergy belongs in the
forefront of the stuggle for
human rights, Father Twomey
told a meeting (March 2) of
the Cincinnati Catholic Inter
racial Council. Moral and re
ligious considerations are
basic in the struggle, so
"leadership should come
primarily from those who claim
to be expositors of the moral
law,” he declared.
Racist practices are
"criminal activity,” he said,
and there would be less of it
"if more priests would get
into the pulpit and explain the
law of love and of justice.”
He declared religious groups
too long have lagged behind in
working for racial justice.
Despite the present critical
nature of the issue, Father
Twomey said "tremendous pro
gress” has been made through
"an awakening of the American
conscience.” He said more
people daily "are realizing
America is built on a profession
of faith in the Judeo-Christain
tradition.”
The struggle for human rights
is upper most in the battle for
today’s world, Father Twomey
said. He detailed: "The
communists say that rights can
come only from the state and
can be taken away by the
state. This is the heart of
totalitarianism. We say it is
from God that we receive the
endowment of rights, and the
purpose of government is to
see there is a environment in
which men can exercise their
rights in a peaceful and order
ly way.”
Until the race crisis is
solved "we will never success
fully contend against com
munism,” Father Twomey
said.

Vocations Talk
SAVANNAH—Highlight of the
monthly meeting of the Saint
James Parish Council of Cath
olic Women was a tape re
corded talk by Mother Marie
Elizabeth IHM, Principal of the
school.
The talk was an informative
one on the nature of a Religi
ous vocation and the present day
need for Religious teachers.
Particular emphasis was plac
ed on the fact that complete
education develops the Spiri
tual as well as the intellectual
and cultural growth of the child.
Interesting reports were pre
sented by various committee
heads, with a particularly ap
pealing emphasis on "Empa
thy” stressed in an impressive
manner by Mrs. William Lub-
inski, chairman of International
Relations. Mrs. J. Anderson
reminded the members of the
Home products workshops plan
ned for the morning of March
18th and the evening of March
24th. A motion was made and
carried to continue sending lit
erature to a grateful missionary
and the group was urged to at

held on Wednesday, April first.
Letters were read inviting all
to the annual Deanery meeting
on Palm Sunday, March 22, at
Navivity of Lord Church, and to
a Workshop on Organization and
Development, to be held on

The love-sick teenager was
devoutly praying his aspira
tions. After addressing himself
to the Trinity, the angels and
archangels, he turned to St.
Joseph with a familiar prayer
he mistakenly thought was de
signed for that great saint,
“Sweetheart of Mary, be my
salvation.”
Speaking of St. Joseph, whose
feast occurs next week along
with St. Patrick’s, here are two
illustrious patrons, very worthy
of imitation.
Joseph is probably the sec
ond most common name, after
John. He has always been a
favorite intercessor and pro
tector for Christians, down
through the ages since the in
fancy of the Church. Small won
der, too. His virtues are so
readily apparent from the
Scripture. He is a very human
saint, warm, vibrant and alive.
His problems were those every
breadwinner is faced with. Per
plexing difficulties occurred
frequently. But his sterling qua
lities of character see him
through. His trust in divine
Providence is perhaps the one
we notice easiest. In the
paganda purposes. As a result,
faced when he discovered his
betrothed expectant of the
Christ child, in the anguish
presented by the necessity of a
trip to Bethlehem for the census
and the flight to Egypt to es
cape Herod’s bloodthirsty
sword, Joseph exhibited un
blinking confidence in God to
take care. His tremendous re
spect for the virginal chasity
of Mary is a virtue never so
necessary as in this sex-cen
tered era. His deep humility as
the dutiful foster-father of his
own Creator and Redeemer is
edifying and imitable.
Indeed, his dogged devotion to
duty is so instinctive and habi
tual with him that Joseph is
Scripturally summarized simp
ly as “a just man.” We may be
sure that if the Christ made
Himself subject to Joseph and
thereby advanced in age and

wisdom and grace, then assur
edly this wonderful saint was
uncommonly good and holy, es
pecially chosen for the noble
role of spouse to the mother
of God.
March 19th is a day super
iorly fitted to a program of
rededication to Christian fami
ly ideals by every male creature
acquainted with Christianity
Young men and boys, oldmer
and middle-aged would do wel
to pledge themselves to “go t<
Joseph” for heavenly help anc
earthly example. St. Joseph wil
gladly show us the way and aic
us along the path to manly piet)
and perfection.
To close with a joke, as we
opened with one.
A second-grader was being
given a rapid-fire cross-exam
ination in catechism class
“What is Communion? When die
Christ die? When was the Last
Supper? Whose body do we re
ceive?”
With a quick switch to the
sacrament of Penance, the
priest asked “How do you go
to Confession?”
“Close your eyes and stick
out your tongue,” came thi
quick, unthinking reply.
