One of the most beautiful
customs of our parish churches
is the annual May Procession
and Crowning of Mary. Because
it is usually a bright sunshiny
Sunday, and because the crowds
of parochial school children and
adults march around in the fra
grant outdoors, the devotion

invokes all nature to join in
homage to the Queen of hea
ven and earth. We all are en
chanted by the dignity and state
liness of regal splendor in a line
of march honoring the royal Mo
ther of God. The fresh flowers
and brightly colored wearing
apparel add so much brilliance
to the day's festivities.
But all this would be in vain,
if we did not surrender
our hearts as well as our ex-

ternal display to the glorifica
tion of Christ’s mother.
So much poetry and fine
writing has been employed to
sing the praises of Mary, that
we may be inclined to lose sight
of the reality of her maternal
love for us. We might give our
relationship to her an other
world quality, dripping with
unreal sentimentality and pious
exaggeration that the result
could very well be no intimate
and personal bond of love with
her.
All the church’s external
rites are merely the means to
captivate the intellect and will,
the mind and the heart for ser
vice to God. It would be an abuse
to get all wrapped up in the
emotional wallop of the May
Day festivites, and forget the
rededication to the ideals ex
emplified by our Lady’s life
and virtues, and the work for
our salvation she accom
plished by her powerful inter
cession.
If we only focus on her pu
rity, her charity, and her hum
ble submission to God’s will,
we have probably the three most
important virtues she can im
part to our young ladies, both
by her example and her spiri
tual aid. If we can get all of
our teenage girls to achieve
Mary’s high ideals concerning
sex, her pride in being modest,
disdaining all that smacks of
vulgarity, cheapness and loss of
reputation. Oh, if only all would
treat every one of their com
panions with respect, kindness,
meekness, a tender compassion
where needed, instead of shun
ning some because they won’t
run with the crowd hither and
yon at the peril of their souls.
And so very important, if
each young lady will maintain
the goals and ideals presented
by her education in the Catholic
discipline, doing always what
pleases God and not the world,
the less-spiritual associates,
the mob clamoring for popula
rity at any cost.

and hatreds more politely
masked. There has been some
growth in virtue, too: but as we
look into our own hearts we must
confess that God cntinues to
receive a pretty grubby return
for the infinite love and bounty
which He has poured out upon
us. Still He does not give up.
It is a sad story in the telling
and yet for us it is a glorious
story. The golden thread
running through the darkness is
the fact that God simply will not
accept defeat. His patience, His
mercy, His love are inexhausti
ble.
As individual’s we dare not
presume upon God’s patience.
We must, we absolutely must
do for Him the best that we can
with the graces He gives. But
as we do that very insignificant
best, we move forward with con
fidence and hope. We stumble,
we fall. Doggedly we pick our
selves up and try again. We have
so little to give, but if it is our
best it is enough. God has put
up with so much sin and abuse
through the centuries that even
our little love will seem like
a lot to Him.
