Drink and Dress. Two very
important areas of potential
danger for our teenagers. Both
are sources of temptations all
year round, but during the
“hazy, lazy days of summer”
they are doubly potent as pos
sibilities of leading to trouble.
Clothing has the two-fold pur
pose of protecting us against
the weather and providing some
bit of decoration or adornment.
But whatever the fads or fash
ions indicate, our manner of
dressing ought not to violate the
principles of modesty.
Modesty in dress dictates
that all dress so as to see that
no unnecessary incentives to
sins of impurity occur either in
oneself or others. Modesty thus
9/ti
protects chastity. Of course, it
is true that some consideration
must be given to the place or
type of activity one is dressing
for. We all know that what is
modest and decent on the beach
or basketball court would not
be modest and decent in visit
ing a church or even on a shop
ping tour down town.
The kind of clothes worn
by both boys and girls should
be decided by the place, the
occasion or event, and the build
or physique.
It is well to remember that
boys can be immodest in their
dress — this is not a matter
where girls alone can offend.
Sloppy shirttails, no socks,
ducktail, Caesar and beatle
haircuts may be all right for
casual dress of “hanging
around” but they are rightfully
offensive where better ap
pearances are important as in
church or school. And whereas,
these modes may not be im
modest skin-tight levis or male
bikinis definitely are. In fact,
boxer type trunks or cut-off
trousers are happily more sty
lish now.
Recreation may call for more
casual and less cumbersome
clothing, but recreation does
not excuse immodesty. Free
dom of movement in swimming
or games or athletics does not
require brief or revealing
attire like short shorts, tight
slim jims and such garments.
Suits a size too small can nev
er be modest.
There is a lot of chatter
about two-piece vs. one-piece
bathing suits. Fashion should
never dictate morality. There is
no excuse for bare midriffs and
overexposed flesh. Even for
the pretext of getting a better
tan. the fact remains that
a young lady so attired instinc
tively, hurriedly and shame
facedly covers up when chan
cing upon a person in religion,
which indicates that a natural
reserve and modesty will in
evitably come out.
For date and dance, neat
and attractive attire, not nec
essarily expensive are the
order of the occasion. Slovenly
and untidy dress shows little
respect for the date. Dresses
or sweaters and skirts, sport
jackets or something similar
are proper. And some of the
formals and even bridal gowns
that are worn are an open in
vitation to unchaste glances.
A juvenile may not easily
see what all the fuss and bother
is about. Parents are obliged to
enlighten their children as to
the whys and wherefores of mo
desty in dress and to insist, even
when fashions are to the con
trary and * ‘everybody is doing
it,” the way against parental
wisdom, that their offspring
are "not going to be caught
dead” in something provaca-
tive. Too often the tragedy is
just that—they are caught dead,
that is, dead to sanctify
ing grace as a result of fool
ish styles of dress.
Another sad fact is that
many offenders are blissfully
ignorant. Some seventh-and-
eighth-graders are dupes to
pressures to keep up with their
older sisters and have no idea
that they offend modesty and
present temptations against
holy purity. Here is where ex
ample, instruction and firmnes s
on the part of parents is so es
sential.
We are to be in the world
but not of it. We are not to go
along with pagan environment
but to fight against its evil
influences. It is much more than
to be out of the state of grace.
Jottings —
(Continued From Page 4)
I shall not know, light to them
and strength. Let them be hap
pier because in me, He has, with
exquisite courtesy, chosen to be
among them. I have been this
morning in Heaven, and Heaven
has come to abide in me; let
me take Heaven with me into
the world. Most of all, Lord, You
who are in my soul, can adore
God as I cannot, do You adore
Him for me, and in me; Win
for us, Lord, the kind smile of
Our Father; let Him see in each
one of us, not ourselves, but
You, His beloved Son, in whom
He is well-pleased.”
A PRAYER FOR CHRIST’S
CONTINUED PRESENCE:
"Lord Jesus, I must return now
to my day. I must leave the
God’s World—
(Continued From Page 4)
pect me to get meals on time
when I don’t have what I need?”
The husband could have shout
ed, “Next time go yourself!”
Peace would be shattered again.
Arguments can begin over
such trivial disagreements as
to whether it was four weeks or
six that Mother was here to
dinner; whether it is a Buick
or a Mercury that the Joneses
drive; whether husband pro
mised to clean up the basement
this Saturday or said he would
do it as soon as he could.
Any time that you find your
self on the verge of a dispute;
just ask yourself, “Does it mat
ter that much? Does it matter
enough to participate an argu
ment?” Ninety-nine times out
of a hundred the answer will
be “No!”. If you can be honest
enough to give yourself that
answer, the argument will fade
as quickly as though you had
flicked a switch.
The other person’s mistake
may have annoyed you but it
will not bring the world to an
end; there is no need to rub
his nose in his stupidity. The
other person’s wrong opinion
will not change the course of
history; let him think that red
is blue if he insists. Your own
stature as a person is not di
minished because someone has
questioned your wisdom. You
are just as right, remaining
silent, as you are when shout
ing for vindication—and you
are much more charitable,
much more pleasing to the
Prince of Peace.
peace and calm of your holy
house for the vocation that is
mine and for the work you have
asked me to do. Yet I do not go
alone, dear Jesus. You are with
me now. You will remain with
me physically for many more
happy moments. And then your
spirit, your dear abiding pres
ence, will remain with me as
long as I permit it to remain.
Indeed, dear Jesus, I know that
you will never leave me unless
by sin I drive you forth. Never
allow me to do anything so stu
pid and evil. Remain with me
today and all my days.
“Work with me, Jesus,
and my work will not be worth
less. Speak with me, Jesus, and
my conversations will help
others along life’s way. Be with
me when I pray, and Our Father
will hear my prayers . . and
when I play, and my recreation
will be innocent. Dear Jesus
remain with me all my life.
And stay with me until the hour
of my death, that you may lead
me safely through the final
gates into your eternal pres
ence. Amen
